BP's Big Oil Find Cements Gulf's Revival

BP PLC announced a major new oil find in the Gulf of Mexico, the latest in a string of discoveries there that cements the offshore waters of the southern U.S. as one of the oil world's most promising exploration regions.

BP said its Tiber prospect, about 200 miles due south of Lake Charles, La., is a "giant." The field is estimated to contain three billion barrels of oil, although only a fraction of that may ever be extracted, spokesman Daren Beaudo said.

BP is already the biggest producer in the Gulf, pumping the oil and natural gas equivalent of 400,000 barrels there a day.

Just two decades ago, the Gulf of Mexico was called the "Dead Sea" by an industry that believed it had already offered up all its big discoveries. But now it is again front and center for petroleum explorers.

As new technologies have enabled exploration in the deepest recesses of the Gulf, nearly a dozen discoveries, including BP's Tiber, have been made beneath nearly two miles of water. Indeed, a BP spokesman said of Tiber: "We believe it's the deepest well ever drilled by the oil and gas industry."

The deep-water successes have spurred new enthusiasm that oil production in the Gulf of Mexico will rise. The U.S. Minerals Management Service, which oversees offshore oil leases, predicts 1.88 million barrels of oil a day will be produced in 2013, up from a storm-battered 1.14 million barrels a day last year.

In 2010, about 14% of crude oil production in the Lower 48 states will come from four deepwater Gulf oil fields, two of which, Atlantis and Thunder Horse, are operated by BP, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said.

The technological wizardry required to suck oil from the ancient rocks, known as the Gulf's lower tertiary, underscores how extraordinarily expensive it is to develop these prospects. To drill each well costs about $200 million, industry executives said. And a prospect often requires several wells, plus expensive pipelines and floating facilities.

Still, the Gulf of Mexico has emerged as a major area of interest for the Western oil companies that have been locked out of many of the world's largest untapped resources in the Middle East and Russia.

"If you are looking for another opportunity of that scale that is oil and that is open to [Western oil companies], the Santos Basin of Brazil is the only other one in the world," said Andrew Latham, a vice president of global exploration services for consultant Wood Mackenzie.

Other recent finds in Uganda, Kurdistan and off the coast of Ghana are estimated to be several billion barrels of oil, while the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil contain "tens of billions of barrels," he said.

Making the site even more attractive, oil companies have to pay the U.S. less in taxes, royalties, oil payments and other levies for the privilege of drilling than they would have to pay other governments.

This combination of financial and geologic advantages has drawn the attention of many of the world's largest oil companies. Even Exxon Mobil Corp., which hadn't embraced lower tertiary exploration with the same vigor as its competitors, is increasing its activity. Last year, the Texas behemoth leased 142 offshore exploration sites, compared with 12 in the two previous years.

But it has been Exxon's peers that have led the way into the Gulf's lower tertiary. Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Chevron Corp. are expected to begin producing oil from Perdido -- a floating cork-shaped platform as tall as the Eiffel Tower -- in the next few months. That is expected to be the first oil produced from a lower tertiary discovery.

"If anyone was under the impression that the Gulf of Mexico was done, they should change that impression," said Marvin Odum, Shell's head of exploration and production from Brazil to Canada.

In mid-2010, a second lower tertiary discovery -- Petroleo Brasileiro SA's Chinook and Cascade prospects -- is expected to begin producing. Rather than build a 165-mile pipeline from the discoveries to the Louisiana coast, Petrobras is building a floating production, storage and offloading facility, called an FPSO.

While FPSOs, which resemble giant oil tankers, have become commonplace elsewhere, including off Angola, it is the first one in the Gulf of Mexico.


Gustavo Amaral, a Petrobras senior vice president in charge of Gulf of Mexico operations, cautioned against premature enthusiasm about the Gulf oil discoveries. Much remains unknown about how well the oil will flow from the prospects, and it can't be determined until they begin pumping oil.

"The statistics tell us there is a lot of oil left in the Gulf of Mexico, but there are challenges. The key for the success in the ultradeep lower tertiary plays is how the wells will behave," Mr. Amarall said.

Despite the uncertainty, Tiber and other lower tertiary finds are substantial enough to excite investors. BP's American depositary shares rose 4.08% today on the news. If one-third of the estimated three billion barrels of oil can be successfully retrieved, an optimistic figure according to analysts, it could fetch $70 billion at market prices.

But that would slake the globe's thirst for crude for only two weeks, and oil markets were unimpressed by the news. A barrel of crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange settled at $68.05, unchanged from a day earlier.

The federal government is shutting down the dredging that was being done to create protective sand berms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The berms are meant to protect the Louisiana coastline from oil. But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department has concerns about where the dredging is being done.

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, who was one of the most vocal advocates of the dredging plan, has sent a letter to President Barack Obama, pleading for the work to continue.

Nungesser said the government has asked crews to move the dredging site two more miles farther off the coastline.

"Once again, our government resource agencies, which are intended to protect us, are now leaving us vulnerable to the destruction of our coastline and marshes by the impending oil," Nungesser wrote to Obama. "Furthermore, with the threat of hurricanes or tropical storms, we are being put at an increased risk for devastation to our area from the intrusion of oil.

Nungesser has asked for the dredging to continue for the next seven days, the amount of time it would take to move the dredging operations two miles and out resume work.

Work is scheduled to halt at midnight Wednesday.

The California dredge located off the Chandelier Islands has pumped more than 50,000 cubic yards of material daily to create a sand berm, according to Plaquemines Parish officials.

Nungesser's letter includes an emotional plea to the president.

"Please don't let them shut this dredge down," he wrote. "This requires your immediate attention!"

Magnets to stop oil spill
PALM BAY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - At the Advanced Magnet Lab in Palm Bay, Rainer Meinke researches highly sophisticated applications for magnets.  One of those applications could be a, simple fix to the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill and that has attracted the attention of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Meinke wants to fill the metal pipe, currently belching tens of thousands of gallons of crude into the ocean each day, with extremely powerful magnets.  But these aren't the magnets holding pictures on your refrigerator.  These magnets are made of neodymium boron.  They are the same diameter as a silver dollar, and are about half an inch thick.  Dr. Meinke says they are so strong, they could injure a person if not handled correctly.

"If you get your thumb between two of these magnets, the forces are really so large that it can crush your bone."

Meinke, the chief scientist of Advanced Magnet Lab, envisions dropping the permanent magnets into the tube, where they will naturally cling to the metal wall. As more are poured in, the magnets will create an unbreakable bond with each other.

"That is the beauty. By themselves, they will seek the right position," says Meinke, "and they will stick to the steel of the tube, and they will automatically, without doing anything, block that thing up."

Dr. Meinke knows a lot about magnets. He has a Ph. D. in Physics, and once managed the $12 billion supercollider project.  As part of a white paper he submitted to the coast guard he calculated his magnets will not be washed out by the flowing oil.

"We have calculated what the flow rate and the flow velocity of the oil is. And we have calculated what the drag effect on the magnets is. And you can show that gravity still wins, even at these very large flow rates.

Meinke's idea is far from being implemented. The Coast Guard would need to fund experiments using his method on the oil leak.

EU chief warns 'democracy could disappear' in Greece, Spain and Portugal

Democracy could 'collapse' in Greece, Spain and Portugal unless urgent action is taken to tackle the debt crisis, the head of the European Commission has warned.

In an extraordinary briefing to trade union chiefs last week, Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso set out an 'apocalyptic' vision in which crisis-hit countries in southern Europe could fall victim to military coups or popular uprisings as interest rates soar and public services collapse because their governments run out of money.

The stark warning came as it emerged that EU chiefs have begun work on an emergency bailout package for Spain which is likely to run into hundreds of billions of pounds.

A £650 billion bailout for Greece has already been agreed.

John Monks, former head of the TUC, said he had been 'shocked' by the severity of the warning from Mr Barroso, who is a former prime minister of Portugal.


Mr Monks, now head of the European TUC, said: 'I had a discussion with Barroso last Friday about what can be done for Greece, Spain, Portugal and the rest and his message was blunt: "Look, if they do not carry out these austerity packages, these countries could virtually disappear in the way that we know them as democracies. They've got no choice, this is it."

'He's very, very worried. He shocked us with an apocalyptic vision of democracies in Europe collapsing because of the state of indebtedness.'

Greece, Spain and Portugal, which only became democracies in the 1970s, are all facing dire problems with their public finances. All three countries have a history of military coups.

Greece has been rocked by a series of national strikes and riots this year following the announcement of swingeing cuts to public spending designed to curb Britain's deficit.


Spain and Portugal have also announced austerity measures in recent weeks amid growing signs that the international markets are increasingly worried they could default on their debts.

Other EU countries seeing public protests over austerity plans include Hungary, Italy and Romania, where public sector pay is to be slashed by 25 per cent.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who visited Madrid last week, said the situation in Spain should serve as a warning to Britain of the perils of failing to tackle the deficit quickly.



He said the collapse of confidence in Spain had seen interest rates soar, adding: 'As the nation with the highest deficit in Europe in 2010, we simply cannot afford to let that happen to us too.'

Mr Barroso's warning lays bare the concern at the highest level in Brussels that the economic crisis could lead to the collapse of not only the beleaguered euro, but the EU itself, along with a string of fragile democracies.

But it risks infuriating governments in southern Europe which are already struggling to contain public anger as they drive through tax rises and spending cuts in a bid to avoid disaster.

Mr Monks yesterday warned that the new austerity measures themselves could take the continent 'back to the 1930s'.

In an interview with the Brussels-based magazine EU Observer he said: 'This is extremely dangerous.

'This is 1931, we're heading back to the 1930s, with the Great Depression and we ended up with militarist dictatorship.

'I'm not saying we're there yet, but it's potentially very serious, not just economically, but politically as well.'

Mr Monks said union barons across Europe were planning a co-ordinated 'day of action' against the cuts on 29 September, involving national strikes and protests.

David Cameron will travel to Brussels on Thursday for his first summit of EU leaders since the election.

Leaders are expected to thrash out a rescue package for Spain's teetering economy. Spain is expected to ask for an initial guarantee of at least £100 billion, although this figure could rise sharply if the crisis deepens.

News of the behind-the-scenes scramble in Brussels spells bad news for the British economy as many of our major banks have loaned Spain vast sums of money in recent years.

Germany's authoritative Frankfurter Allgemeine Newspaper reported that Spain is poised to ask for multi-billion pound credits.

Mr Barroso and Jean-Claude Trichet of the European Central Bank are united on the need for a rescue plan.

The looming bankruptcy of Spain, one of the foremost economies in Europe, poses far more of a threat to European unity and the euro project than Greece.  


Greece contributes 2.5 percent of GDP to Europe, Spain nearly 12 percent.

Yesterday's report quoted German government sources saying: 'We will lead discussions this week in Brussels concerning the crisis. It has intensified to the point that the states do not want to wait until the EU summit on Thursday in Brussels."'

At the end of last month the credit rating agency Fitch downgraded Spain, triggering sharp falls on stock markets.

On Friday the administration in Madrid continued to insist no rescue package was necessary.  But Greece said the same thing before it came close to disaster.

Yesterday the European Commission and the statistics authority Eurostat met to consider Spain's plight as many EU countries consider the austerity package proposed by the Madrid administration insufficient to deal with the country's problems.

Obama Warns World Leaders 'Millions Could Die' From Gulf Oil Disaster

A sobering report circulating in the Kremlin today from President Medvedev's meeting with other World leaders at the G8 summit in Muskoka, Ontario states that President Obama has warned his counterparts that the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster "will most likely kill millions, perhaps tens of millions" of people during the coming year.

Fueling Obama's dire assessment of this "Gulf Apocalypse", this report says, are the oil and toxic rains now being reported to be falling throughout the US Gulf Coast region due to the fracturing of the Gulf of Mexico seafloor allowing untold millions of gallons of oil and millions of cubic feet of methane gas to escape unchecked into our World's seventh largest body of water, not to mention the millions of gallons of dangerous disbursements being used that is poisoning everything in its path.

So dangerous has the Gulf Coast environment become to human beings the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning that, in part, says: "People, including pregnant women, can be exposed to these chemicals by breathing them (air), by swallowing them (water, food), or by touching them (skin). If possible, everyone, including pregnant women, should avoid the oil and spill-affected areas."

With nearly 20 million American's living along the affected Gulf Coast region one wonders where they could all go and leaving many to speculate a massive evacuation is being planned by the US Government of the entire region.

This view, however, is not shared by a Louisiana woman named Kindra Arnesen who was allowed unprecedented access to the BP Operations Center overseeing this catastrophe and reported to the Gulf Emergency Summit this past week that along with millions of fish dying because of this disaster people are falling ill all over the region.

Even worse is Arnesen's incredibly reporting that even as this oil disaster grows BP is being allowed the US government to begin cutting costs in their cleanup and oil containment efforts.

Important to note about in this report is that Obama's warning that "millions could die" from this disaster has been further confirmed by the American engineer who helped lead the team to put out the Persian Gulf oil fires set by Saddam Hussein in the first Iraq war and had warned a full 12 months before the April sinking of the Deepwater Horizon that BP was drilling into a huge methane deposit that if released would be beyond catastrophic, it would be biblical in its scale of destruction.

Note: Along with the unprecedented danger facing the Americans due to this oil spill catastrophe it is important to remember the billions of dollars being made from it by some of the most powerful people and corporations in the West, and as we had reported on in our June 16th report titled "Obama To Earn Nearly $85 Million From Gulf Oil Disaster".

Interesting to note too is that one of the World's top oil and gas industry experts Matthew Simmons is calling for the evacuation of the entire US Gulf Coast, and as we can read as quoted by him in an interview with the Washington Post News Service:  "We're going to have to evacuate the Gulf States. Can you imagine evacuating 20 million people? . . . This story is 80 times worse than I thought."

Now the "80 times worse than I thought" comment by Simmons is one of the most vitally important points to understand in this unfolding historic disaster due to the findings of the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) high-tech research ship Thomas Jefferson, and as we can read as reported by the Los Angeles Times News Service:

"The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Monday released new data from the agency's latest research trip through the Gulf of Mexico, showing concentrations of oil below the surface at more than 3,600 feet below the surface, about 7.5 nautical miles southwest of the BP's blown-out well.

The Thomas Jefferson research ship found evidence of depleted oxygen, a potential sign of microbes digesting oil, in the area. Acoustic and fluorometric instruments likewise indicated the presence of oil. Water samples taken on the trip have not been analyzed.

Since the leak began April 20, attention has been focused on surface oil washing up on environmentally fragile shoreline ecosystems. But "plumes" or "clouds" of oil hovering in the water column below the surface, where myriad marine life eat, breed and swim, has as much or more potential to cause ecological damage to the Gulf, scientists have warned."

Not being explained to the American people about NOAA's findings is that the live video feed of this spill being shown to them of this spill contains oil and methane gas being expelled at pressures estimated to be at 100,000 pounds per square inch (psi) and cannot in any way being associated with the massive underwater oil plumes found by the Thomas Jefferson nearly 8 kilometers away.

To where these massive underwater oil plumes are coming from, Simmons stated during an interview on the US television network MSNBC that the release point was "5 to 6 miles away" from where the Deepwater Horizon sunk.

In our June 10th report "Scientists Warn Gulf Of Mexico Sea Floor Fractured "Beyond Repair" we reported that Russian scientists (the only scientists to have actually viewed this disaster in their deep submersible submarines) had likewise confirmed Simmons dire assessment of this catastrophe; reports, mind you, that not only have we seen, but Simmons has undoubtedly seen too.

Most incredibly in all of these events is that Obama has issued what many experts are calling a "get out of jail free card" to BP in the setting up of a $20 Billion "sham" cleanup fund paid for by this British oil giant that allowed them to borrow from Goldman Sachs the entire amount and not affecting their bottom line for years, if not decades to come.

To the greatest consequence of this catastrophe upon the American people, an FSB appendix to this report warns that the US Soldiers currently deployed throughout their island territory of Puerto Rico are in fact being trained in how to "suppress and contain" large concentrations of people and being "recycled" to military bases throughout the State of Florida where they will soon be joined by an estimated 28,000 NATO allied troops where both will join up with an estimated 7,000 pre-positioned UN marked vehicles for purposes "still not known or clearly stated by the US".

To the greatest danger facing the American people it comes from the founder of the psychoanalytic school of psychiatry Sigmund Freud's nephew Edward Bernays, the father of the field of "public relations" and propaganda, who said that news was made "when reality is distilled down to the most simplified and dramatized form and it appeals to the instincts of the public mind."

Unfortunately, the "instincts" being instilled in these Americans "public mind" is going to kill them as there is NOTHING to be simplified about this catastrophe, and what they aren't being told by their so called mainstream media, or what they aren't willing to find out for themselves, is going to kill them.  Just like all of those who cleaned up the1989 Exxon Valdez spill disaster, ALMOST ALL OF WHOM ARE NOW DEAD.

As millions of gallons of oil continue gushing from the fractured beyond repair Gulf of Mexico seafloor following the April, 2010 explosion and collapse of BP's Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, millions (and soon to be billions) of dollars are at the same time flowing into the pockets of America's elite classes, mainly those controlling their government and banking.

Unfortunately for the American people though is that at the same time they can see the unfolding of this environmental catastrophe on their televisions, the looting of their National wealth is being hidden from them by a congressional-military-industrial complex they were warned about by their World War II hero President Dwight Eisenhower who in his January 17, 1961 farewell address said:

"A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction...

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence — economic, political, even spiritual — is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development.

Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.

The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together."

The American people failed to listen to either Roosevelt's or Eisenhower's warnings, or even to their Founding Fathers, all of whom warned them that unless they remained vigilant in protecting their Nation they would lose it.

And according to this damning FSB report this is exactly what they have done.

Now to understand this report it must first be remembered who financed Obama's takeover of the Presidency, and in order of their contributions to his campaign they are: 1. University of California, 2. Goldman Sachs, 3. Harvard University, 4. Microsoft, 5. Google, 6. Citigroup, 7. JPMorgan Chase & Co., and 8. Time Warner.

The importance of these contributors lies in what and who they control, and they are: 1.) University of California and Harvard University have provided Obama with the "intellectual firepower" he needs to force upon the American people his "progressive agenda" remaking their once vital democracy into a totalitarian socialist state, 2. Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase & Co. have given Obama unlimited resources through his allowing them to loot the US Treasury, 3.) Microsoft and Google have given him unlimited access to information on the American people unprecedented in modern times, and 4.) Time Warner who has given Obama near total control over all the information told the American people through their news outlets.

Upon Obama's taking office he staffed his administration with what is called a "Wall Street Cabinet", including former employees of Goldman Sachs who Rolling Stone Magazine in their devastating article "The Great Bubble Machine" on this banking behemoth warned, "From tech stocks to high gas prices, Goldman Sachs has engineered every major market manipulation since the Great Depression — and they're about to do it again."

And when Rolling Stone Magazine warned that Goldman Sachs was about "to do it again" they probably didn't even know how apocalyptic this banking giant's machinations towards the United States really are, and as evident by the BP disaster in the Gulf when just three weeks prior to the Deepwater Horizon explosion they sold nearly half their shares of BP stocks saving for their investors billions of dollars of potential losses.

Goldman Sachs wasn't alone either in its astute "foreknowledge" of the collapse of BP's stock value due to the Gulf disaster as BP's own chief executive, Tony Hayward, sold about one-third of his shares weeks before this catastrophe began unfolding too.

But according to this FSB report the largest seller of BP stock in the weeks before this disaster occurred was the American investment company known as Vanguard who through two of their financial arms (Vanguard Windsor II Investor and Vanguard Windsor Investor) unloaded over 1.5 million shares of BP stock saving their investors hundreds of millions of dollars, chief among them President Obama.

For though little known by the American people, their President Obama holds all of his wealth in just two Vanguard funds, Vanguard 500 Index Fund where he has 3 accounts and the Vanguard FTSE Social Index Fund where he holds another 3 accounts, all six of which the FSB estimates will earn Obama nearly $8.5 million a year and which over 10 years will equal the staggering sum of $85 million.

The FSB further estimates in this report that through Obama's 3 accounts in the Vanguard 500 Index Fund he stands to make another $100 million over the next 10 years as their largest stock holding is in the energy giant Exxon Mobil they believe will eventually acquire BP and all of their assets for what will be essentially a "rock bottom" price and which very predictably BP has hired Goldman Sachs to advise them on.

Important to note is that none of this wealth Obama, Goldman Sachs, and other American elites is acquiring would be possible without this disaster, all of whom, as the evidence shows, "somehow" knew what was going to happen before it actually did, including the US energy giant Halliburton who 2 weeks prior to this disaster just happened to purchase the World's largest oil disaster service company Boots & Coots. 

Unfortunately for the American people watching as these elites destroy their country is that they are being told none of the truth, especially about Obama, who while becoming enormously wealthy off the hardship, misery and toil of his citizens has become the only US President in history to begin jailing every government whistleblower he can find, has won the right to jail anybody he wants without charges and hold them forever, and most incredibly has claimed the right to assassinate any American citizen he deems a threat.   

The great American Founding Father, and the United States first President, George Washington once said, "Experience teaches us that it is much easier to prevent an enemy from posting themselves than it is to dislodge them after they have got possession."  The American people to their great shame didn't heed these words, now they are paying for it.
