Many will agree with that statement.

That at least verifies what I wrote 2 articles back.
Internet is fantastic for fast news. But also horror for everyone making up his/her own version of the news.
What's true of the rumor that the Navy is gonna evacuate the whole coastal area for a supposingly long scheduled drill?
But the real reason is that they want to nuke the hole. At least that's the story.

It's looking like we are increasingly reliant on the relief wells to fix this, which are going to take from august to october [current estimates] to drill.

If that's the case, then I think we really have to get serious about sucking the oil out of the water itself until the leak can be fixed--can we all shout SUPERTANKERS loud enough for our reps to hear in Congress?

Fox reported last night that a thing called the Jones act was holding up the use of foreign ships in the gulf and that it could be waived by the President for this purpose as was done during Katrina.

The other thing we really need to do is pray--could one of you prayer warriors write a prayer for this?  We really need help on this one.

jabcat

Also heard, I think in that same Fox report you mention Molly, that foreign aid/help has been turned away.  They said it somehow violates some workers' union's wishes...sounds like some dandy decisions are being made.

Yes, that's the Jones act, and yes, that's the unions who would be objecting if anyone is.

Apparently they've hired the Russians because they are the only ones who have ever drilled this deep, according to Lindsey Williams this well is 25 to 30 thousand feet deep, but the Russians have done it on land, not 5000 feet under the water.  According to Williams the pressure in this well is 20 to 70 thousand psi [Prudhoe Bay wells are typically 1000 psi].

But that's the internet.  If only mainstream media would come out of their coma.  Cnn is getting upset, though, because no one will talk to them on the beach or from the company.  And, they, too, are confused about where is the government? [ans: writing bills to take advantage of every crisis ha!].

The stuff on the internet is enough to stop your heart.  The internet says that bp has a complete media blackout and threatening people with arrest.  The internet says bp is not letting people clean this oil up.  If that's true, what is going on?

I've read 600 bar - 8700 psi

BP has no happy news that's for sure. They were silent from the start and only reported "hopeful" things like we are sucking out xxxx barrels oil daily. Or we pay fishermen to help cleaning so they can earn their living too. (but all the cleaning contracts have gone to lawyers and doctors who get up to $1500 for unverified help...)

Quotebut the Russians have done it on land, not 5000 feet under the water.
And as anyone who hit a waterpipe when drilling a hole in the wall knows.... drilling is easier than plugging the hole

And, that helps them...how?  It's not as if they are going to hide a trillion barrels of oil.  Now this silence, the lies, the ban on talking to reporters, the areas barred from reporters, the flyover ban on airplanes, the complete lack of clean up, the ban on drilling...

If I were to put on my most paranoid thinking cap, what would I conclude?

It won't help them anymore. But in the beginning they might have hoped to plug the hole in a short time and be able to claim half a trillion instead of  a trillion.
Quotethe flyover ban on airplanes
They don't have that power. So .gov is involved too.
Quotethe ban on drilling...
I think there is none. Do you really think after all those wars for oil .gov gives up the opportunity to get the black gold?

Is this true???
QuoteUnder the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 federal courts cannot impose damages in excess of $75 million on any oil firm responsible for a spill. O'Neill cautions they'll have to wait a long time before checks are actually cut.

But really, let's say you're the CEO of a multi billion dollar company.  Are you just going to blow off a 500K safety device because you can?  Isn't that kind of penny wise and pound foolish?  If it were me, I would put every safety device in place known to man.  We're talking 5000 feet below water just to get to the wellhead.  For what this is going to cost them, 500K looks like chump change.

"There are 6 redundant seperate emergency systems that can close [the well]...  They all failed... It doesn't make any sense"

There are two things at work here.  First, there is the original blowout and why it happened.  "There are 6 redundant seperate emergency systems that can close [the well]...  They all failed... It doesn't make any sense"  My guess is they encountered a psi that they had never encountered before and were not expecting.  I say that because if none of the 6 redundant systems worked, it means they couldn't work--that is, they couldn't handle the pressure.

But, the second thing that nobody is talking about is what sunk the rig.  You notice from those pictures that the rig sits right above the drilling pipe.   I heard that the coast guard was ordered by the epa to put out the fire because it was polluting the air.  So the coast guard pounded the rig with sea water for two days, flooding all it's compartments until it became unstable and sank, snapping the pipe off at the well head [or compromising  the pipeline itself which he seems to indicate from his pictures].  Don't know if it's true but it makes a lot of sense to me.  And, if it is true, it needs to be exposed.  Because it means they should have let it burn until they could close the well.  Much better than what is happening now.  They stopped the fire by sinking the rig [mod edit].

Quote from: wwOr count BP just say: Here you got your $75 million. Now it's up to you to clean up things.

Yes, that's my understanding, the law limits their liability to 75 million.

I think that's why we see all the sabre rattling lawyers visiting the gulf with threats of criminal charges.  Not sure they would have much of a case, really...

Throw out the lawyers and bring in the supertankers.

Firstly I'm not sure all those systems are already in place at this early stage.
Secondly there is/was some sort of ultimate safety device that permantly caps the well. It's manually controled. Once activated the well is unusable for every costly. So that option is used as the very ulitimate option. To late in this case because when the rig fell over the pipes jammed/damaged the devise.
That's what I have understood from various sources.
Plus I think there is more going on than just those safety devises. They are just attached to the pipe that's in the sea bottom. But what if that pipe it self is damaged. If the plumbing (pipes) in your house (sea floor) is broken closing your tap (safety devise) has no effect.
