what happens when you die?

I think scripture speaks of death figuratively as sleep because folks knew the dead were unconscious.

"Yet now Christ has been roused from among the dead, the Firstfruit of those who are reposing. For since, in fact, through a man came death, through a Man, also, comes the resurrection of the dead. For even as, in Adam, all are dying, thus also, in Christ, shall all be vivified. Yet each in his own class: the Firstfruit, Christ; thereupon those who are Christ's in His presence; thereafter the consummation" (1 Corinthians 15:20-24)

I think everything about the death state is speculation, but we have a choice about where we get our information about what we believe about it. I think scripture is the most reliable source of information, but I realize there's a broad spectrum of interpretation. I just offer my mine humbly. I don't claim to be an authority or to have all the answers. I just go by what I think scripture is saying to me.

My Catholic family thinks my mom and handicapped sister are angels in heaven now. I don't argue with them even though I don't believe that, but I believe I'll see them both again someday when we're all immortalized together.

 yes......that's what happens when the spirit of life leaves it.  it is the spirit of life that makes the flesh appear alive..  that spirit

  leaves and the flesh body is conscience of nothing[it is just dust of the earth,after all] written in the dust......

   the firstfruits are those of the called..who have sit with Him in heavenly places through the spirit..while dwelling in their flesh

among their generations..in their death[upward call] they rise and are counted in among the first resurrection[1000 year reign]

   those that belong to Him at His coming[He comes many times..in fact never left..I stand at the door and knock..if ye open

the door..I shall enter and sup with you[He has done this with all His annointed in each generation]  He meets us in the clouds

   ..men of Galilee..why do you stand here looking up..this same Christ shall return in the same manner....and when ye see Him

   face to face ye shall be just like Him...and when the disciples died..they too.....rose to meet Him just like He come down to meet them

in the clouds..[always a custom to go forth to meet those you were expecting] and they have always been with Him......

  and they will come with Him when it is our time also...for every eye shall see Him coming on the clouds of heaven.

I don't think any of those who died have risen to be immortalized yet except Christ.

 what about the scriptures that speak of those resurrected and entered the city..and were seen of men.....?  Mt 27;52

  the tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs and

after Jesus resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

People were resurrected in scripture, but I don't think any were immortalized so far except Jesus, sis.

"I am charging you in the sight of God, Who is vivifying all, and of Jesus Christ, Who testifies in the ideal avowal before Pontius Pilate, that you keep this precept unspotted, irreprehensible, unto the advent of our Lord, Christ Jesus, which, to its own eras, the happy and only Potentate will be showing: He is King of kings and Lord of lords, Who alone has immortality, making His home in light inaccessible, Whom not one of mankind perceived nor can be perceiving, to Whom be honor and might eonian! Amen!" (1 Timothy 6:13-16).

what do you think happened to them?..did they return to their tombs?   I think it was most certainly the first resurrection ..holy people

  that had died seeking that city not made by human hands.  the better things had come..a better covenant..a better resurrection

I think all except Christ who were resurrected died again because Christ wasn't just resurrected. He was vivified, in other words immortalized, given life beyond death.

Where is that last verse I want to compare it with the Concordant Version?

well Jesus said 'I am the resurrection" so He didn't come 2000 yrs ago? 1 Timothy 6 verse 12.....

  and He hath freely given unto us eternal life. He said 'the Father has granted me life in myself"/seed  unless a kernal of wheat

fall to the earth and die..HE REMAINS ALONE..but if He fall to the earth and die[Christ did!] He beareth much fruit unto heaven.

I found it.

"Get hold of eonian life, for which you were called" (1 Timothy 6:12)

I don't think in terms of "eternal life" because I think the word "eternal" is misleading and not as accurate a translation as "eonian" which is the English form of "aionion," the adjective of the Greek "aion," a period of time not endless time.

It's the same story for the next quote because what I think is being promised is "eonian" life meaning life for the eons when we've been immortalized.

I think scripture is concerned with the eons, and the only thing "eternal" in the scriptures is God even though the word isn't used. Some will argue about the Greek "aidios" in Romans 1:20, but I think it means "imperceptible."

 Jesus said ;I AM THE WAY" and is the pattern Son...the one we are to be made in the image of. when He said' I am returning to

the Father' when He spoke about laying His life down...and we are to follow Him..hear ye Him..in Him I am well pleased..and

  I ALWAYS DO WHAT PLEASES THE FATHER.....I look for the pattern of His life/resurrection/Glory to be ours.

I used to think about "eternal life" when I was a King James fan but not anymore.

  how sad........the sadducees didn't believe in the resurrection either.

I think using the phrase "eternal life" confuses the issue because there are specific eons spoken of in scripture when specific things happen, and the eons will come to an end. We're not actually told about what happens after that except that we'll always be with the Lord, and we'll never die again. I trust God to make it a very amazing experience though.
