The budding of the fig tree... Jesus cursing the fig tree... reminds me of several years ago when a wide eyed girl about 6 years old told me with awe in her voice that"cursing the fig tree" was the only time that Jesus ever sinned. :laughing7: :Chinscratch:

sheila

lol! I hope you told her He  didn't sin...that might mess her up!!

I had to! How many sins would it take committed by Jesus to negate all the plan of salvation and reconciliation? :laughing7: :Peace2:

I read a lot of the stuff on "Prophecy" and wonder what it has to do with The Book of Revelations? Perhaps a section for current event discussions could be started? I know I am the lemon and sour grapes here, and I know prophecy means prediction, but it seems that more religious and man thinking goes into the predictions  when  posted than a prophetic word. I say this with my understanding that the Revelation of Jesus Christ is just that, the manifesting-unveling  of Jesus Christ in the chosen/elect. I believe the revealing of the manifested sons of God is a spiritual unfolding and a work being done in those who have an ear to hear, what the Spirit is saying, rather than puzzling current events together with interpretations we glean from  words related to how men understand the language compared to events. I mean no offence, but what I read is no more different than news analysts examining and speculating on the middle east troubles. And I hope no offence is taken.
I have been given to understand the 7 churches to be the chosen(one body), the good and the bad spoken of, is in part, a word revealed to each one who hears, revealing our weaknesses and strengths.
It reveals to those who are hearing, the incompleteness in their walk. We all know the word church is "ekklesia" the calling out, and there is but one body I Cor. 12:19,20. and Eph 4:4. Jesus said, "... the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."  John 6:63.
I believe Rev 1:10  "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day".......
this is the most important matter when we study The Revelation of Jesus Christ.

Of course this is just an offering and certainly open for for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
:HeartThrob: :dsunny: I mean no offence to anyone. I await the outcome. :HeartThrob: :dsunny:

Micah, you keep saying, [my paraphrase] Why are you people reading the newspaper?  Is this a current events thread?

But, my point is, When Bible prophecy starts looking like the news, it is a sign of the times.

I'm not trying to prophecy anything.  I'm just reading the news--in Daniel, Ezekiel, Hosea, Micah, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Revelation--2 to 3 thousand years before it happens, and finding [for myself] that it is converging with what is happening today.

What's amazing to me is that things are not playing out the way I would predict, necessarily, but they are playing out, all the same, in congruity with the scripture.   Certain things have to happen in a certain way before Jesus returns.  I don't know about you, but when I see a foreign army standing in Jerusalem, I will start counting.  You or others might have some other criteria they are watching for.   The people who should have recognized Jesus the first time missed him.   Do we want to be caught off guard the way they were?

You hypocrites! You can forecast the weather by judging the appearance of earth and sky. But for some reason you don't know how to judge the time in which you're living.

No, and that is exactly why I done work a denominational religious puzzle.  :dsunny:

Molly, I think you are right about certain things must take place before the Lord returns, but armies have gathered around Jerusalem periodically for thousands of years, and it is only one of many signs. I think we are caught off guard when we do not realize that Jesus will appear first in His holy temple, us- and that the greatest sign of the end times is the latter rain, the restoration and revelation(unveiling)of the Body of Christ. This is what the parable of the wise and foolish virgins was about(imo). All the virgins were awakened by a call to the wedding feast, "The Bridegroom comes!" Why does He come? To be united with His bride. Who is she? The ecclesia of God, a church without spot wrinkle or blemish. Why wedded? So that their united voice can cry out, "COME ALL YOU WHO ARE THIRSTY, DRiNK FREELY OF THE WATER OF LIFE!" The Spirit and the Bride say COME!, so let all who are thirsty come.

In every generation (wether the last or not) we must keep our vessels full of oil and listen for the cry that will awaken us in the night, "The Bridegroom Comes!" and run to that place of refuge before the door slams shut.

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
(Psa 91:1-9)

In the days of Noah, they did not understand UNTIL THE DOOR SLAMMED SHUT.

There five wise virgins and five foolish. They were all virgins. The foolish could not enter in because THE DOOR SLAMMED SHUT.

Everyone was invited to the wedding feast(union of the Lamb and the Bride), many ignored the INVITATION. SO THE FATHER OF THE GROOM INVITED THE LOWLY UNEXPECTED GUESTS and Jesus said, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see the harlots and the tax collectors celebrating as children of the kingdom and you yourselves CAST OUT.

"AWAKE O SLEEPER AND ARISE FROM THE DEAD AND THE LIGHT OF CHRIST WILL SHINE UPON YOU".

In the latter days the mountain of the house of the Lord will be exalted above all the other mountains.

But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel. See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven. And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, "YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN." This expression, "Yet once more," denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.
(Heb 12:22-29)

Who is coming down from heaven like a Bride adorned for her Groom? The heavenly Jerusalem. In what is she clothed? The righteous acts of the saints!

Who shall know there God and do exploits? Those who are strengthened with might by His Spirit in their inner man and clothed with the full armor of God. Not by Might, nor by Power but by my Spirit says the Lord.

We are in the valley of dry bones today. Cry out to the wind. Come Holy SPirit, bring on th elatter rain.

The good farmer wait patiently for the early and the latter rains. First shoot, then the stalk, then the ear. The ear comes last, Let the one who has ears to hear hear :o)

Why does it have to be denominational?  Why can't we just read it for ourselves?

And, it's only a puzzle as long as it is sealed.  It is only sealed until the appointed time.

Once it is unsealed, it should presumably be clear as day.

Quote from: eagleswayI think we are caught off guard when we do not realize that Jesus will appear first in His holy temple, us- and that the greatest sign of the end times is the latter rain, the restoration and revelation(unveiling)of the Body of Christ.

I think we all have our experiences with this in our relationship with Christ.  But, it's only an earnest now, and we all long for much more than we have.

And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. --Rom 8:23

I am not so much concerned with that, myself, as I have pretty much come to accept my limitations, and enjoy everything that I am given of Christ now.

But, do you think that when this happens, the full adoption that is, it will be 'suddenly' as Paul describes?  Or, do you think, at the end of the age, we will start experiencing a greater and greater indwelling of the Spirit, with signs following?

He says new wine cannot go in old wineskins.  Aren't these bodies old wineskins, and therefore, a limiting factor?

I do understand about Jerusalem and historical armies, and I appreciate it is only one of many signs.  The fact that I am waiting for it, means that I think many of those signs have already been fulfilled.

Not meaning to be contentious but :o),

Prophesy does not mean "prediction". It means "bubbling over" as in, overflow from the heart of God. Some prophesy predicts things but most prophesy is about unveiling the heart and mind of God, the I AM- and using that as a mirror to unveil to us who we are- the good and the ill.... so that we can be transformed into His image.

If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
(1Co 14:23-26)

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
(Heb 4:12-14)

And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
(Rev 19:10)

Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
(2Co 3:15-18)

IMO, The apocalypse of John is the unveiling of the heart and mind of God to His people (anyone who has ears to hear what the spirit is saying) in every generation and yeah, I think it predicts a few things, but most it reveals spiritual realities that transcend time.

If we were able to enter those spiritual realities(seated in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus), if we hungered for the truths hidden within them- we would find ourselves in the 'secret place of the most high'- informed and prepared for any eventuality and directed in each moment how best to serve the Lord and dispossess the enemy (break down the gates of Sheol) Today. :o)

When Daniel is given the prophecy of the Antichrist by Gabriel, he is sick for days.

I think you're both right     :gimmefive:

In the things I've looked at, it seems both meanings can be attached to prophecy;   foretelling (a. below - telling what the future will be);  and forth-telling (b. below - proclaiming truth or news).

a. A prediction of the future, made under divine inspiration.
b. An inspired utterance...viewed as a revelation of divine will.

"The specific meaning of prophecy as used in Old Testament times, is much more limited in nature...it actually meant that the LORD God was speaking through certain men prophets, and giving them special words to deliver that would "fore-tell" things that were going to happen in the future. It is these supernatural predictions that both strongly prove that the Bible is the Word of God, and also provide the framework for the things to come that Christians must watch for."  - Kathy McFarland

"Prophecy [often] in the New Testament church carries no prediction with it whatsoever, for "he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort" (I Corinthians 14:3). Notice that there is no mention of the word prediction here.   The word prophecy means to bubble up, to flow forth, or to cause to drop like rain."    David Boshart

I wonder if that means that Christians are not to make new predictive prophesy because all prophesy that we are to know was already given to us through the ancient prophets of the Old Testament.

Just about all prophetic predictions in the New Testament, including the book of Revelation, are based on Old Testament prophesy.   Even Jesus liberally sprinkles his prophesy about the end of the age with Old Testament references and specifically references Daniel.

Interesting.

eaglesway

If you look at all the scriptures on prophecy a meaning emerges that includes a lot more than just prediction. The whole of scripture is prophesy according to Peter, and I agree with Jabcat- both are correct and neither is complete without the other.

My point is that, the testimony of Jesus is much more than a prediction- it is the revelation of the heart, the mind, the divine nature and the plan, of God. Predictions will not prepare us unless we have also entered the spiritual truths and realities and received the exhortation, edification and consolation of the word.

If you look sometime in Vines dictionary at prophecy and prophet, the pro means forth telling as well as fore telling and has to do with receiving oracles of God. Divinely inspired speech is prophecy whether is predicts something or not. Strong's NT Greek definition is very limited- not wrong, just a very limited view on a very big word.

Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God's will in thought, purpose, and action),(2Ti 3:16)

So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

I think predictive prophecy is still a part of the New Testament experience. I don't think it is like Daniel Ezekiel and John tho (scripture level)

And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea: Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

I'll only say this.   Maybe it's my own hard heart and lack of vision, but about ANY outright predictions I've personally heard or read, touted as "coming from the Lord", I don't know for sure that I've ever seen ONE of them come to pass.   :dunno2:  Maybe it's just me.  Or, again, as you both say;  maybe [predictive] prophecy has already been given us in Holy Writ, and prophecy today is more of the edifying nature, Jesus Christ revealing Himself in our midst.  I'm just not sure, but it's worth thinking and praying about.

OTOH, I do believe God leads us, directs us with that "still small voice" - even gives certain people wisdom that we need to pay attention to, consider how what they're saying lines up with the scriptures, seek the Lord for His guidance on it, etc.

Such as some are giving information right now about where America is heading.  I tend to believe some of them.  However, it's not because they say "without a doubt God told me this and you better listen to it".  It's more because a few are willing to have the attitude of "I believe God is showing", or "if I'm understanding God's leading", etc... Also, again, what's the "still small voice saying"?  Are we just "swallowing" whatever comes along, or going to the Lord for discernment and confirmation about what's being said, etc.?  Much to consider..

Also, by "New Testament Experience", that could mean "it's written" already (the scrip you posted, as well as whatever part of Revelation is predictive (and yet future?)...OR, still things being given today that are definitely predictive, i.e., FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD. That may be the case, but I'm personally cautious, while trying to not be OVERLY critical..again, I've seen enough things offered as FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD that didn't APPEAR to come true, I'm careful..  Just today thought of the scrip, "test all things, hold to that which is good".  Can be hard to discern.   :2c:

Well, actually James, I agree with you. I am saying it "could be technically" a part of the NT experience, but like you, I can't remember any of the predictive prophecies I have heard coming true- I see it as a subject that definitely should be handled with care because there are so many "prophets" running around that are really just soothsayers.

That is why I focus on the "heart and mind of God", "oracles" aspect of prophesy- it grounds us so that we can walk in the Spirit and the Word and not get carried away by "predictions" or "interpretations of predictions". In 33 years of following Christ I have seen so many run off the "reservation" because they were sure God had showed them when and where this or that or the other was going to happen.

I mean to me, it looks like we are getting close but, I exhort believers that knowing the times should mainly spur them into seeking His face and learning to walk in the Spirit and in His nature and in the Logos.
