What is flesh is flesh and what is Spirit is spirit

Understanding what   category  sin /error     enters and    what is spiritual in nature and what is   carnal in nature is   our basic learning experiences

Our    flesh   desires  &   spirit  desires  are at odds , our battlefield is within our own minds and bodies   as well as with others it seems   sexual and   hateful   , power over  one another  &   otherwise

Loving your neighbor as yourself   can apply to  your spiritual  man as well as your carnal man,to me  , we  consider   the new man in Christ when you are born again ,   and that is when the true  warring begins  that is what I have been learning  anyways  , you can run away from    everything ,  but you cannot run from yourself    and many are prisoners   to sin   because of this  warring within  themselves    , mental illness  ,   sexual immorality     , murder      etc  the list is endless .

It takes Jesus and His peace that surpasses all UNDERSTANDING    to know your loved despite your   weaknesses . flaws and desires    , Only God can  change us   , we can do nothing of ourselves

Grace  comes from God in all forms   of life .and it is sufficient .enough; adequate. ample  to keep us going till the end of all flesh ..

Gal 5 ;17 New American Standard Bible
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.

    2 Cothinth 5  13

13For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you.

14For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; 15and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf....

Consider the Lord Jesus Christ now  in everything we do   and we belong to Him  , His possession

An obsession with it, means your walking in the flesh, too much.

I was always blessed to read  that all youth is vanity/ fleeting  / nothing
  Ecc   11 :10
...9Rejoice, young man, during your childhood, and let your heart be pleasant during the days of young manhood. And follow the impulses of your heart and the desires of your eyes.

Yet know that God will bring you to judgment for all these things.

10So, remove grief and anger from your heart and put away pain from your body,

because childhood and the prime of life are fleeting.

and Paul said when he was a child he  done childish things , but  now was becoming a man and growing up in Christ Image /example

I do believe   when your young     you have obsessions with ''feeling good '' about yourself  and  with yourself     [ vanity ]

10but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.

11When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child;

when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

12For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part,

but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known

I dont know  everything ,   but have many questions and  see  many have the same ones also

I try to share things that have helped  along the way

Jesus is the reward  !!

Porn, masturbation etc.. are a result of idle time.  The more your work, then the less time you have for it.  But of course, if your not in the spirit, then you'll make time, even with a busy schedule.

Good question.  It is interesting to me that something that is so significant to many men (and I suppose especially in these times women too) is not addressed directly in scripture.  God is mute on the subject, so am I.

I think that the heart of the answers above is good and appropriate:  what is your heart (spirit) focused on?

Many believe it is a sin because of the circumstances of Onan's death in the book of Genesis. Some argue that God killed Onan because he spilled his seed, others argue he killed Onan because of he was disobedient. As for me, I believe that passage could be interpreted both ways.

Onan was acting wickedly by using the wife that God blessed him with as nothing more than a sex object and blatantly disobeying the law/instruction of Yahweh to produce an heir for his dead brother. Proverbially slapping your wife, dead brother and God in the face.... three strikes in one wicked act, and he was out.
