James,

From where I live there seem to be problems elsewhere (too)
Look at internet as normal roads.
Depending on whre you live you use other roads.
Those roads can vary in quality.
If the last road that ends at the building where the TM site is located is under construction no one can reach the building/site. But I'm sure (from checking posting times) that while I can't reach the site others can.
That means the forum is inline.
Tests show that for me the last 3-4 roads are of bad quality. Quite often traffic jams or closed

If most on here are having a problem loging in, wouldn't you think it is something to do with the website? Wouldn't it be easier to fix the site instead of everyone changing their nameserver? This seems to be avoiding the real problem.

CHB

Hi TechHelp, I agree with CHB.  There are so many people having problems, including myself both at work and recently (new situation) from home.  Also, new people joining, or wanting to join, or even just look at the site, I wouldn't think could really be expected to go in and change things with their systems to be able to access the site.  :dontknow:  Isn't there probably something unstable/not working correctly within TM somewhere that needs attention rather than people finding creative ways to find/access the site?  Thanks  :2c:

P.S.  This isn't a new situation, it only seems to have recently gotten worse.  We have a thread in the mod section where people are discussing having problems connecting from 2-3 months ago.  Without being anywhere close to being any sort of expert, I just truly believe there's an internal problem.  From work, if a site isn't obviously blocked by the company, I can surf all over the place, no problems connecting.  But TM "goes out" perhaps a time or two a month, but now at least twice just this past week - last night for the full 8 hours while at work.  I personally truly don't believe that people changing personal settings is a satisfactory solution.  Thanks.   :2c:

This is the only website on the Internet that I have trouble getting on. Please consider what Jabcat is saying.  This morning after I got on the forum some of the pages wouldn't load all the way. There is something definitely wrong with this site.

Hi All , time to speak up .

As C says, it's the only site I EVER have trouble getting on...if I couldn't get on other sites, I'd go along with the "general" problem argument...TM is the ONLY site I have problems with...and I'm on the computer HOURS at a time...no problems except HERE....

What about all the people that hear of TM, want to check it out, come by and then can't get on...some likely won't come back...this site completely crashed in 2007, and before Martin left, he had said a time or two he wondered if TM was about to "go down" again because of the way it was acting...so, whether there are "general" problems or not, I believe there's SOMETHING not working right with TM itself...still my  :2c:

Last night I got an email from Card, saying her nor Willi either one have been able to get on, and she asked if the site was "going down"...

WOW ! I remember that time James

I wonder if its getting to big , to hold all the   writings and posts etc
was it  something to that order ?

I just dont know anything  about  sites and crashes  :mshock:

hate to hear no one can access TM these days  :sigh:

Today I have been having some problems, partial download of pages, for now seems to be working.
I would hate to loose Tentmaker again.

Gary is working with techHelp to attempt to improve things...he believes there are multiple things involved and hopes she can change a setting tomorrow that will help...perhaps another thing or 2 can be done as well...he's working on it.

Maybe s/w along the lines you're talking about WW, Gary mentioned the current server system as a possible issue, there have apparently been problems with it in the past somehow.

Forwarding your info on to Gary as it comes in, hopefully will help him/them know what to do...thanks

Proxies are not a bad idea on itself. They do work in some cases.
All this stuff may sound complex to some but it isn't much diffrent from how you drive with your car from A-B.
If you drive from east to west coast you can takes millions of routes. Internet always takes the interstates.
If you know the interstate is jammed you take a little detour. Internet should find those detours itself. But doesn't in all cases. Using a proxy is like forcing a detour. (proxy has other uses but in this case its what counts)
But if you are closer to the destination very few other routes are possible.
And finally half of us is on the jammed rout and the other half found the last detour.

Hi White Wings,

Good description of how the Internet network is structured. It is like a road map, with alternate routes.

I just took a look at the Internet Weather Report and although most of the US seems good right now, there is a major outage in Atlanta, Georgia, which has been going on at least for the last 24 hours.

If anyone would like to see a summary of how the various parts of the Internet network are functioning, just go to:

http://www.internettrafficreport.com/

You can then click on the continent you want to see more details about, and then you'll see a listing of all the routers in that area, and which are functioning and which are not.

To get back to the Tentmaker site itself, the server is running fine, there is plenty of disk space and we do a backup of the server every night onto a second hard drive.

I have sent a support request to the datacenter that hosts the web server, to see if they had any advice on what is happening, and if there is anything they can suggest to help people who are having difficulties connecting to the forum.

Thank you for your encouragement, White Wings, and thank  you to everyone for your patience.

TechHelp

Hi everyone,

I just tested using the two proxy services that WhiteWings suggested for accessing the site if your regular connection isn't working.

One works, the other is having problems.

The connection timed out on anonymouse.org

The connection went right through on guardster.com/free

There is something not good occurring out there somewhere.

K

WhiteWings

Karen,

I use http://visualroute.visualware.com/ for my network trace.
The last 3-4 hops are always bad.
If you use the omni path it searches alternative routes.
For me there are none because because there aren't many transatlantic backbones :-)
The peering points it that bad part of the route usually don't resolve so no detours possible.
As said 3-4 bad hops. Unless there are some hops inside the data center it's not (only) the host that is having trouble.
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

WhiteWings

Karen,

Can you see how many connections the site had when things went down the hill?
I once had a site that got became very slugish when there were to many simultaion connections.
Few clicks at the host and it was permanetly solved.
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

From the direction I'm approaching the web server, there is nothing unusual going on. (Well, that second node before the server is a little slower than usual, but it didn't time out by any means.)

Could you please send me a traceroute? The tech people at the datacenter asked me to get traceroutes from some of the people having difficulties accessing the site.

Thanks!

It can be helpful for problem solving. Even/especially if you can not connect.

Assuming you are using Windows NT or Windows 2000 or Windows XP
1. Click Start
2. Click Run => Usually 3rd line from the bottom
3. Type cmd
4. Click the OK button
5. In the black window that now opened type: tracert www.tentmaker.org
6. Wait until you see Trace completed (or similar)
7. Left click somewhere in the black window
8. Right click in the black window and select: Select all
9. Start a new post on the tentmaker site.
10. Right click in the message window.

Hi WhiteWings,

Thank you for the traceroutes.

I sent them on to the support team at the datacenter.

I was going to give directions for doing traceroutes, then I started worrying that I only know the exact steps for Windows XP, and would have to look up for other operating systems. Thank you for posting the directions for XP. :girlheart:

Now, if anyone is using a different operating system on their computer and would like directions, please post here and I will dig up the directions for you.
