Hi rosered I missed you too!
This was really strange the evening that Beloved Servant started the thread, I never fit in, I understood completely.
I tell you I felt pain I felt uneasy all night (didn't sleep well)  and part of next day.
I thought I felt someones pain, it was not pain in the body but spirit.
I don't know exactly cause my spirit oh nevermind sometimes I feel out there... :sigh:
I just wanted everyone to know I miss them so much.  :HeartThrob:

Then you'll love this.  I go to a Church of Christ university and most CoCers don't believe in the rapture.  A professor told me a story about a student he had there who did believe in the rapture and one day, showed up to class not realizing that class was canceled that day.  Apparently, she went all over campus looking for people and became certain that she had missed the rapture! Finally, she came across a professor (the one telling me this story) who had come back to the school to get something from the office.  After he explained what was going on, she responded "Oh good! I was afraid I got left behind in the rapture and you guys don't even believe in it!"  Gotta love it   :laughing7:

I'm wondering if some folks are having problems connecting.  I sometimes have problems connecting to TM from work, but then yesterday had multiple times when I couldn't get into TM at all.  Had to keep trying til it finally connected.  (?)
Title: Re: Where is everyone??
Post by: WhiteWings on March 05, 2010, 09:42:25 PM
Yesterday I couldn't connect for at least four hours.
Today I couldn't connect for at least eight hours.
I can see the site isn't down because I can reach the main site with a little trick.
I can see the forum but can't login due the way cookies are used (cookies store your password etc)
But activity has dropped several weeks before today.

I'm here today via vtunnel.  You can google it and use it when using your own IP and servers won't let you through.  May be something on this site...I couldn't access tentmaker the weekend of the 21st, now blocked yesterday and today again.

I haven't had any problems as lately but a few weeks back couldn't connect at all.
I couldn't even read the forums.
The way mine was resolved was through an email, otherwise possibly still not able to access.

Thanks reFormer good to remember if  have problem again.

Yep, I was blocked all night again from work, full 8 hours.  I really think something's unstable with the site and/or server, but I don't know enough about to know if that's right or not.  I'm thinking a lot of people can't get on...Card told me fairly recently she couldn't connect either.  I think I'll send Gary an email and let him know about it...there's a webmaster somewhere he communicates with about TM who may be able to take a look at things for us.
Title: Re: Where is everyone??
Post by: WhiteWings on March 06, 2010, 11:43:22 AM
Jabcat AFAIK it's not the Tentmaker server. The problem is elsewher in the route. The DNS server.
A DNS server is like a dictionary.
Internet does not work with names like tentmaker.org. It only works with numbers like 123.123.123.123 (called IP adress).
The DNS server translated the name to the number.

So I think you are not blocked. It's a networl malfunction. It makes no sense that your office blocks only for 8 hours. If they block it likely will be permanent.
Plus while you are 'blocked' others are able to post so that proves teh site is up.

Hey Tony.  You may be right, however, there's may be something wrong with the site too - or maybe they don't know what you just said and are trying to fix something they can't fix?  Because I got this response from Gary  :dontknow:

I said;  Hi Gary.  Please look at this thread...I'm thinking there are folks that can't connect.  I've problems getting on TM both from work and home this week...almost never from home, but several times was blocked this week.  Thanks.  You and Michelle take care, will still be praying for you guys.

Gary said;  We've tried to fix it but apparently it's not fixed well enough. We'll keep at it.

Sooooo, we'll see.

Hi everyone,

Gary alerted me to the questions here about accessibility of this site.

Gary had trouble getting to the site a couple days ago, and yet the web server has been consistently up and running.

I thought Gary's ISP might be routing his connection through "nameservers" which are having some sort of problem.

So, I had Gary change the nameserver details in his computer. Then he was able to access the site.

You might want to try changing the nameserver settings in your computer and see if that helps.

One place with instructions on how to change the nameserver details in your computer is http://www.dnsadvantage.com/switch/index.html

Another is at Google, which also offers public nameservers. Info and instructions for using Google's free public nameservers are here: http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/

There are other options, but either one of those would be a workable solution. In fact, you could do what I did, set one of the nameservers to be the numbers from the first site, and the other to the numbers from Google.

Let me know in this thread how things go for you.

Thanks,
Karen

64.191.108.38 -> 33% packet loss
96.9.191.2 -> 14% packet loss
64.191.52.138 -> 83% packet loss

No so good but at least I can connect now

If most on here are having a problem loging in, wouldn't you think it is something to do with the website? Wouldn't it be easier to fix the site instead of everyone changing their nameserver? This seems to be avoiding the real problem.

Hi White Wings,

Thanks for the info about packet loss. I just did a traceroute to the server and it was quick, no delays.

I'm in upstate NY, where are you located?

Hi again,

It just occurred to me that if the nameservers are not working correctly in your corner of the Internet, you may be able to get to the Tentmaker website by using the IP address:

http://64.191.52.138

You might want to save that address just in case.

Hi TechHelp, I agree with CHB.  There are so many people having problems, including myself both at work and recently (new situation) from home.  Also, new people joining, or wanting to join, or even just look at the site, I wouldn't think could really be expected to go in and change things with their systems to be able to access the site.  :dontknow:  Isn't there probably something unstable/not working correctly within TM somewhere that needs attention rather than people finding creative ways to find/access the site?  Thanks  :2c:

P.S.  This isn't a new situation, it only seems to have recently gotten worse.  We have a thread in the mod section where people are discussing having problems connecting from 2-3 months ago.  Without being anywhere close to being any sort of expert, I just truly believe there's an internal problem.  From work, if a site isn't obviously blocked by the company, I can surf all over the place, no problems connecting.  But TM "goes out" perhaps a time or two a month, but now at least twice just this past week - last night for the full 8 hours while at work.  I personally truly don't believe that people changing personal settings is a satisfactory solution.  Thanks.   :2c:

James,

From where I live there seem to be problems elsewhere (too)
Look at internet as normal roads.
Depending on whre you live you use other roads.
Those roads can vary in quality.
If the last road that ends at the building where the TM site is located is under construction no one can reach the building/site. But I'm sure (from checking posting times) that while I can't reach the site others can.
That means the forum is inline.
Tests show that for me the last 3-4 roads are of bad quality. Quite often traffic jams or closed

As C says, it's the only site I EVER have trouble getting on...if I couldn't get on other sites, I'd go along with the "general" problem argument...TM is the ONLY site I have problems with...and I'm on the computer HOURS at a time...no problems except HERE....

What about all the people that hear of TM, want to check it out, come by and then can't get on...some likely won't come back...this site completely crashed in 2007, and before Martin left, he had said a time or two he wondered if TM was about to "go down" again because of the way it was acting...so, whether there are "general" problems or not, I believe there's SOMETHING not working right with TM itself...still my  :2c:

Last night I got an email from Card, saying her nor Willi either one have been able to get on, and she asked if the site was "going down"...

Gary is working with techHelp to attempt to improve things...he believes there are multiple things involved and hopes she can change a setting tomorrow that will help...perhaps another thing or 2 can be done as well...he's working on it.

Maybe s/w along the lines you're talking about WW, Gary mentioned the current server system as a possible issue, there have apparently been problems with it in the past somehow.

Forwarding your info on to Gary as it comes in, hopefully will help him/them know what to do...thanks

Proxies are not a bad idea on itself. They do work in some cases.
All this stuff may sound complex to some but it isn't much diffrent from how you drive with your car from A-B.
If you drive from east to west coast you can takes millions of routes. Internet always takes the interstates.
If you know the interstate is jammed you take a little detour. Internet should find those detours itself. But doesn't in all cases. Using a proxy is like forcing a detour. (proxy has other uses but in this case its what counts)
But if you are closer to the destination very few other routes are possible.
And finally half of us is on the jammed rout and the other half found the last detour.

Hi White Wings,

Good description of how the Internet network is structured. It is like a road map, with alternate routes.

I just took a look at the Internet Weather Report and although most of the US seems good right now, there is a major outage in Atlanta, Georgia, which has been going on at least for the last 24 hours.

If anyone would like to see a summary of how the various parts of the Internet network are functioning, just go to:

http://www.internettrafficreport.com/

You can then click on the continent you want to see more details about, and then you'll see a listing of all the routers in that area, and which are functioning and which are not.

To get back to the Tentmaker site itself, the server is running fine, there is plenty of disk space and we do a backup of the server every night onto a second hard drive.

I have sent a support request to the datacenter that hosts the web server, to see if they had any advice on what is happening, and if there is anything they can suggest to help people who are having difficulties connecting to the forum.

Thank you for your encouragement, White Wings, and thank  you to everyone for your patience.

Hi everyone,

I just tested using the two proxy services that WhiteWings suggested for accessing the site if your regular connection isn't working.

One works, the other is having problems.

The connection timed out on anonymouse.org

The connection went right through on guardster.com/free

There is something not good occurring out there somewhere.

Karen,

I use http://visualroute.visualware.com/ for my network trace.
The last 3-4 hops are always bad.
If you use the omni path it searches alternative routes.
For me there are none because because there aren't many transatlantic backbones :-)
The peering points it that bad part of the route usually don't resolve so no detours possible.
As said 3-4 bad hops. Unless there are some hops inside the data center it's not (only) the host that is having trouble.

Karen,

Can you see how many connections the site had when things went down the hill?
I once had a site that got became very slugish when there were to many simultaion connections.
Few clicks at the host and it was permanetly solved.

From the direction I'm approaching the web server, there is nothing unusual going on. (Well, that second node before the server is a little slower than usual, but it didn't time out by any means.)

Could you please send me a traceroute? The tech people at the datacenter asked me to get traceroutes from some of the people having difficulties accessing the site.

Thanks!

All very bad pings. Even on my LAN??? :-(
I'm starting to doubt the tracert.
Below a tracert to intel.com and microsoft.com. I assume those 2 giants have serious hosting. But....

Manual for those who want to generate a report as shown above.
It can be helpful for problem solving. Even/especially if you can not connect.

Assuming you are using Windows NT or Windows 2000 or Windows XP
1. Click Start
2. Click Run => Usually 3rd line from the bottom
3. Type cmd
4. Click the OK button
5. In the black window that now opened type: tracert www.tentmaker.org
6. Wait until you see Trace completed  (or similar)
7. Left click somewhere in the black window
8. Right click in the black window and select: Select all
9. Start a new post on the tentmaker site.
10. Right click in the message window.
11. Select Paste -> now the stuff that was in the black window is in the post.

If you are very concerned about your privacy you can delete line 1 and 2. (that locates you at city accuracy)

Hi WhiteWings,

Thank you for the traceroutes.

I sent them on to the support team at the datacenter.

I was going to give directions for doing traceroutes, then I started worrying that I only know the exact steps for Windows XP, and would have to look up for other operating systems. Thank you for posting the directions for XP. :girlheart:

Now, if anyone is using a different operating system on their computer and would like directions, please post here and I will dig up the directions for you.

Karen

Hi Peacemaker,

Please bookmark the following link to use in case you cannot get directly to Tentmaker:

http://guardster.com/free

Type the tentmaker.org URL in that site and it should take you to Tentmaker, bypassing the malfunctioning route.

Hope that helps,
Karen

Hi again everyone,

I dug through the settings on the server for the tentmaker.org domain, and found some weird remains of IP addresses from the former webhost of tentmaker.

I've removed those and am hoping they were the cause of the intermittent trouble you were having.

However, it's so strange that problems from this would just be showing up lately.

So,  :grouppray: may still be in order.

Hopefully it will help, but as I mentioned earlier and you indicate, it's not new, just progressively worse recently.

The average # of posts on TM is 96 per day.  Yesterday there was about 18, and today there've been around 33 or 34...fluke?  or signal things are improving?  Not sure, but that's better none-the-less.

Well, home now, but after being able to access TM for 11 hours from work, with one hour to go before going home, at 3 AM CST I was suddenly locked out/blocked.

Tried to run tracert and got this message - "Unable to resolve target system name www.tentmaker.org."

FYI, James.

That likely means teh DNS server can't be reached (then the destination is unknow)

Try:

tracert 64.191.52.138

Hi again,

After deleting outdated leftover nameserver IP addresses that were inexplicably (the tech support people at the datacenter had never seen this happen (supposedly)), in the DNS zone on the web server, I added a secondary nameserver that is hosted elsewhere.

Some of the trouble early this morning may have been from my making changes in the domain registration records.

Please let me know how things are going.

If you are unable to access tentmaker.org or the forum, please run a tracert and send it to me at traceroute@tentmaker.org

Thanks,
Karen

This is the first time I've been able to access the site for 7 days.

I'm on a Mac using Firefox 3.6 and my local cable company as my internet provider.
Hopefully, all is well now. God is good!

Hi everyone,

If any of your friends who usually participate at this forum are still having trouble accessing the site, here's a procedure they can use to clear out the cache in their computer that was stored when they could not access the site, and which may be perpetuating the problem on their computer.

Windows XP instructions:

1. Click the Start button
2. Click on Run
3. Type the following into the textbox:      ipconfig /flushdns
4. Click OK
A small black window will open, with some words about ipconfig.exe at the top. In a few seconds the black window will close after the dns cache is cleared out.

Only read the following notes if you would like to get an idea of what the above procedure accomplishes and why it may be useful after the intermittent access trouble at the site.

"Ipconfig can be used to clear any cached DNS entries stored in your machine. This command is useful if there was a problem with reaching your nameserver that is intermittent or occurred only briefly: any sites you tried to access when the nameservers timed out by default remain in the cache as a negative result - and you'll continue not to have access to these sites even when the nameserver works again. But, ipconfig /flushdns removes everything from the cache - instead of an immediate no server found, an attempt will be made to resolve domain names again.

How it works in the real-world: Nearly all of the big, national ISPs operate only a few nameservers for all the locations they serve: you connect to a local number (POP), but there is no nameserver at the POP - it could be thousands of miles away and can be affected by all the problems that can occur in the Internet backbone. So, even though the remote access server at the POP you dialed into is working, a glitch in reaching the nameserver can make some sites appear to be down when they are not; a failure in the nameserver or in routing to the nameserver can make it appear that your connection is dead when it really isn't - you'd still be able to access most sites if you knew the IP address. A true local or small regional ISP that operates their own facilities is less likely to have this kind of problem - the ISP's nameserver will most likely be at the POP you dial into, or one near to you, preventing backbone/connectivity issues in reaching the nameserver. If the nameservers fail, the ISP is out of business and both you and they know it.

This is not the case with the big ISPs: where the issue is connectivity/routing to the nameserver, they probably won't know they have a problem, and even worse, are unlikely to have any means to accept a trouble report about the situation!

Maybe a mass mailing to all users?

Hi WhiteWings,

I shy away from a mass mailing because of the probable spam complaints from inactive forum members that would get the server blacklisted.

In the "good old days" before spamophobia, I would have considered sending everyone in the members list an email.

Type the tentmaker.org URL in that site and it should take you to Tentmaker, bypassing the malfunctioning route.

I couldn t get on for several days this past week and I tried from several  indirect links and two other computers. So it seems like it is something more than a cache problem in my computer.

At first tonight from work, I was unable to log on.  Then I cleared the old cache, was able to log on.  Not sure if clearing the cache is what really helped, because after being able to access the site for 8 hours, around midnight was no longer able to get on for the next 4 hours.  Attempted to clear several more times, nothing.

THIS IS THE MESSAGE I GOT FROM WINDOWS WHEN TRYING TO LOG IN TO TM -

"The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties.."

Maybe Karen can write a very basic set of intructions. Then Gary could add it to his devotionals newsletter.
That way at least some people are helped.

Hi WhiteWin
Good idea about maybe sending info to a newsletter list. However, after seeing jabcat's messages that he had trouble getting to the site early this morning, I don't know what to think now.

Hi jabcat,

I think you posted before that you had trouble accessing the site very early in the morning. I'm wondering if that may have something to do with the backup that runs very early in the morning.

The intermittent access problems are very perplexing, especially since I have a site monitoring program that sends a text message to my cell phone when it finds the site is not accessible. Through all these troubles you folks have been experiencing, I have only received one "site down" notice, and when I went a few minutes later to check on the site, it was up and running.

jabcat, have you tried changing your dns settings in your computer to the google public dns, or ultradns, or opendns? Are you located in Missouri somewhere near Gary? I wonder if the domain name servers in the area are not updating properly.

Karen

I think there is something else going on. I had no access for 4 days straight, checking very regularly. Through all that time I have not had an access problem with any other site. I use google chrome on a Vista laptop, so I checked through IE- every site worked but Tentmaker.I downloaded Firefox and tried that, no access. I went to my desktop several times...every site worked but Tentmaker. I went evening before last through my sons laptop, no access. I also tried to go through every other link I could Google. I have had this laptop a year and a half and I spend about two hours a day writing and on the net and I have never had one other incidence like this. I'm no tech expert....but this seemed like something different to me, especially if the site was up all that time.

Yes, it was up.  I had no problem accessing it.  Strange.

Eaglesway. If you can't access TM just enter 64.191.52.138 in the adresbar of your browser.
That should bypass every DNS problem.
The site was up every time. You can check that by for example looking at the posting dates and times in this thread.
It worked 100% of the time for me. Well sorta...
I can access and fully use the main site.
I can enter the forum.
But I can't login because then it switches to the url instead of the IP adress. I don't know how to overrule that behavior. Karen?

I expierence no problem getting on at other places.

I have dial up..don't know if that matter's or not.

Karen, nothing to do with TM but another weird (DNS) problem.
Surf to: http://www.christianbiblesociety.org/
Should be a Bible site but it ends on a Russian dog club.
Trace and write down the ip adress.
Now surf to the IP adress and you end on a Apache server instead of that site....
http://79.174.69.175/
As said very likely unrelated to the TM problem unless the sites are/where in the same area.

Main site and forum was unrearchble 20 minutes ago. Tested with URL and IP so DNS is not the (only) problem.
During that time eaglesway was online.
So again it looks like a routing problem or overloaded servers.

The problems are always in the last 3 hops for me.
a] 63.218.31.42 -> Previous hop Amsterdam. Wouldn't expect any problems on a backbone peering point. :dontknow:
b] Peering point
c] 96.9.191.2
d] Peering point
e] 64.191.52.138

I had been starting to write a reply when the site and the server became unreachable.

I put in a request at the server company for a reboot.

Ok, now to try to remember what I had meant to post.

I heard from a tech support person at my domain registrar this morning that Verisign (the company that has responsibility for the .com and .net domain names) had made some changes having to do with the DNS. I searched online and found they changed how .com and .net DNS is handled, AS OF March 1, 2010. That's about when everything went to hell in a handbasket with the tentmaker.org domain, I think.

Then, what about .org? Was it affected because the nameservers for tentmaker.org are .com domains?

So I then searched for anything I could find specifically about .org domains. Only thing I could come up with was that .org domains need at least 2 unique nameservers. Well, 2 nameservers are running on one server, and I added another nameserver as a secondary yesterday, which runs on a separate server in a separate city.

This morning I found an online service that analyzes many many aspects of the dns settings of a domain. I ran it for tentmaker.org and it dug out the fact that there were no A records for the main nameservers on the server. I added the A records. This afternoon I re-ran the analysis on tentmaker.org and every detail checks out fine (except one minor thing which shouldn't have anything to do with site accessibility (famous last words )).

Ok, that's it for now.

I hope.

Keep us apprised of any troubles you may still be having with accessing the site.

Thanks!
Karen

Hi again,

I just looked for more news about the changes that Verisign is implementing in the nameserver system, and I get a queasy feeling that as they get further into this "security enhancement" we may have troubles again.

Could be but I have to add that in the 2 years I'm on this site I had several days I couldn't connect. So did other members. Things were misconfigured for years?

Hi White Wings,

As I try to piece together what must have happened:

1. There were anomalies in the DNS settings that must have been there from years ago. But, it seems that the system in general was more tolerant. I believe that tolerance is being removed by the changes being implemented by Verisign.

2. Concerning the outage you experienced in the past, there was an incident that occurred where the server was taken off line due to an invalid spam complaint. That took me a couple of days to sort out with the server company.

3. Regarding that other bible site, the DNS records seem in order. The domain records were last updated Jan. 29, 2010. It looks like maybe the domain was taken over by someone else at that time. It's difficult to see if the domain ownership changed hands, since the registration is designated private, with no registrant name or address, just "Privacy Protect".

2b.
There were several outages (with months inbetween)
Just like last week some could and some couldn't reach TM
I can also say for sure it even depended which ISP I used.
From office I couldn't connect. I did a remote login to my home PC and there it worked.
Not always but on several occasions. Both ISPs are located in Amsterdam.

3.
I can understand microsoft wants to buy microsoft.info, microsoft.tv etc
But a dogclub with bible domain. Maybe they breed hellhounds?

Hi White Wings,

Well, some of those dogs look like they could be hellhounds.

If the Bible site has a shared IP address, then the settings in the Virtual Hosts file at their server host may be wrong and directing traffic to another site that shares that IP address.

So in theory the bible website might still be online but just unreachable?
And the dog club site also has another URL.
Whois shows a Russian host. Possible but unlikely the US site is/was hosted there.
Pitty because the site was the only one with info about a Bible we are currently discussing.
Is it possible to find find the IP that was linked to the URL a year ago?

To find the history of IP addresses for a domain, you can go to whois.sc
It's not free to get all the details, though. I think one can sign up for a trial account. I had a trial account at one point, so I don't think I can sign up again.

Just now experienced not being completely "blocked" from the site, but initially it only partially loaded, then several times I went out and tried to get back in and it showed a blank blue page and appeared to be trying to connect/load, but wouldn't/couldn't...finally, after on the 4th or 5th try, I got back in  :dontknow:.  (This is from home, not work).

36 whois changes in 3 year. 16 in this year.
Viewing the actual whois history requires a paid membership

Okay, since there haven't been any recent messages about trouble getting to the site or onto this forum, I'm assuming things have settled down.

If you have any problems accessing the site, please notify me at webmaster (at) tentmaker.org
