It's no secret the Bible is full of verses about giving to the poor. I'm not looking for those verses.

A little while I found a verse or perhaps a set of 2 verses that state something very similar to:
Give to the poor/need but never so much that you/your family gets in trouble/gets hungry because of it.

Much more info I can't give. I know it was in Psalms because I read that on daily basis. Or in the NT.
Likely, not a fact, the verse is not in the first 4 books of the NT

I'm aware that doesn't really narrow down things but that's all I remember.

I'm really looking for a verse or verses. Not for the need, hidden meaning, and whatever about giving.
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

I have looked but cannot find it WW

The only  one close  is  to be satisfied  with what God gives , not to much or to little   that to much  denies the Lord or to little and steal  giving God a  bad reputation   Proverbs 30

Not sure  where it is found    :dunno2:
Jesus is the reward  !!

Hi Rosie,

The verse is not about God.
It's about man-man, neighbor-neighbor or something similar.

Ok    Thanks , it is hard to find with so many different  bible versions   out there  now .
Jesus is the reward  !!

1 Timothy 5;8..dealswith notneglecting family...worse  than those without faith.widows over 60 without believing family members

are only ones to be supported with food etcby church.......

Jesus set an example of the poor widow that gave 'all her means ofliving" while others gave out of their excess.........to  display

the disproportion in giving  that was going on.

Acts 4;32-37  all the believers were ONE in HEART AND MIND. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own[friends in

heaven through  unrighteous mammon..sos..friends in the garden] But they shared everything they had[even true treasures of

Grace and eternal life laid up in heaven] :2c:

1 Timothy 5:

7Give these instructions to the believers, so that they will be above reproach. 8If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Is this the one you are looking for?

D.
7"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8"For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened....

Matthew 7:7 -8

That sounds promising Dandelion! I'll bet that's it!

Before I read it, I was thinking it sounds possibly like a proverb so googled "verse in proverbs about giving"

The only one that sounded near at all was Proverbs 11:24
"One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty." :dontknow:

Not the one about giving the children's bread to the (household) dogs.. as that's in the gospels..

Thanks all, but unfortunately none of the verses are what I'm looking for.

The verse(s) in question are very straightforward. They require zero interpretation. Things like God, salvation, etc are not part of it.

The verse is similar to this:
"Always help the poor but never so much you don't have enough left for yourself/household"

Indirectly Dandelion's verse states the same, because if someone gives to much to the poor he can no longer provide for his own household.
So it puts the same limit on giving as the verse I'm after.

  Searched and searched

All the scriptures  speak of pouring yourself out   to the poor   and afflicted   without anyone knowing  and God will supply  your every need and than some .

and it is fail proof , but I see it can only be out of love  being the true motive of the heart and to  the truly needy ,  or it is for nothing .

Some scriptures warns of enabling the wicked  to continue to do  evil is not a good thing also .

God knows our hearts and motives  better than we do , even of ourselves   and others .

Matt6

"Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them,

for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

"Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you,

as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets,

that they may be praised by others.

Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

But when you give to the needy,

do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

so that your giving may be in secret.

And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Keeping silent before'' this world '' seems to be a big blessing too .......  Basically it is to glory and boast in the Lord  entirely ,  where all good things dwell .

2 Corinthians 8:13-15 ESV

For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. As it is written, "Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack."
