I am just asking as I post this thought.
Gen 1:26  And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Gen 1:27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
This seems to be an established religious truth, so how do we/I explain what became "the walk of mankind"(humanity)when man met the serpent?
If man was the image and likeness, of God, male and female, and had dominion over all the earth, what happened?
Could it be that we need to look at Gen 2:7  And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

This living(soul)creature was not made in the "the image and likeness, of God, male and female, and had dominion over all the earth." This living (soul) creature was made of "dust" which we find in
Gen 2:21  And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; was FLESH and we find in Rom 7:18  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
That there is no "good" thing; Rom 7:19  For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
Rom 7:20  Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. [flesh and sin are they not synonymous?]
Could it be that God, of Genesis 1 began creating, is still creating, and will complete that creation man in the image and likeness, male and female, through His plan and purpose, His process, when complete will be... in all essence  Jesus(Jehovah)? Joh 10:30  I and the Father are one.
Eph 4:24  and to put on the new man, which, according to God, was created in righteousness and kindness of the truth.

Acts 17:26

New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Acts 17:26
and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,

Romans 5:16
The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned(Adam); for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression(Adam's) resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift(Christ) arose from many transgressions resulting in justification.

The one man, for me, is Adam. In Jude 1 Jude speaks of Enoch as the seventh generation from Adam. Paul understood the one man to be Adam. All the lineages are traced from Adam. The story of Eden, whether literal or not, still represents a fall/transgression/act of disobedience/failure of trust as the beginning of mar/err/missing of the mark in man, at least, Paul reads it that way and tells us God caused it to happen(Rom 8), to set all under disobedience so that He might have mercy upon all(Rom 11).

As in Adam ALL DIED, so also in Christ all will be made alive. ALL. Simple when we want it to be, eh? :o)

Rom 5:12  Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned--

The history of sin is also traced to Adam, by Paul anyway. One man through whom sin entered, Adam the son of God(Luke3:38). One man through whom sin was vanquished, Jesus the son of God. Out of Adam into Jesus, born of God by the living and incorruptible seed, translated out of the kingdom of darkness/chaos(Let there be Light) by the Logos implanted(Christ in you the hope of Glory), transformed by the Spirit, conformed to the image of Jesus, the image of God.

That's just my opinion about that :o)

If all we had to do was fiddle around in Gen 1& 2 it would be fuzzier, but personally I find it easy to take Paul's word for it- only because I believe he was a wise master builder chosen to lay the foundations of the faith.

A perfect creation, then the trip up into sin, a new creation and all gathered into it through the second Adam- Jesus= the administration of the fulness of times.  :2c:

I can agree with your offering, finding it good. Still I find the that to "fiddle around" with Gen. 1 & 2 through study and prayer is to getting a better understanding. You offered nothing about the man, male and female made in the likeness and image of God, who had dominion over the earth.
The one man, the first man for me as well, is Adam, "first the natural and then the spiritual."
I don't know maybe, as usual I was unable to make myself clear. :dsunny: Thanks

Maybe, or maybe I just didnt get it :o)

Well what are your thoughts about the man of Gen. 1:26-27? What happened to him/her? It seems to me that it is assumed that the man of Gen.2:7 is that man. Kenneth Copeland says, that man was so beautiful and perfect and full of light, without any fault, that he was just like God, before he "fell." That always troubled me. Why would he want to leave that beautiful position? :dsunny:
I'm just asking.

Some have theorized that Adam knew Eve was to be taken away from him since she had now sinned. He couldn't bear the thought of life without his mate and willingly chose to sin so that they would share their fate together.  :dontknow:

I found these words from Ezekiel simply amazing. They must speak of the time in the Garden of Eden before and after the fall of Adam. I believe these following words offer great insight.

Eze 31:1
And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first of the month, that the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

Eze 31:2
Son of man, say unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude: Whom art thou like in thy greatness?

Eze 31:3
Behold, Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon, with fair branches and a shadowing shroud, and of a high stature: and his top was amidst the thick boughs.

Eze 31:4
The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high; its streams ran round about his plantation, and it sent out its rivulets unto all the trees of the field.

Eze 31:5
Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long, because of great waters, when he shot forth.

Eze 31:6
All the fowl of the heavens made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under his shadow dwelt all the great nations.

Ezekiel now begins speaking metaphorically of Adam. The change is subtle, but we know he was talking of Adam by what is said in vs 18

Eze 31:7
Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: because his root was by great waters.

Eze 31:8
The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him; the cypresses were not like his boughs, and the plane-trees were not as his branches: no tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty.

Eze 31:9
I had made him fair by the multitude of his branches; and all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.

Eze 31:10
Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because thou hast lifted up thyself in stature, ... and he hath set his top amidst the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height,

Eze 31:11
I have given him into the hand of the mighty one of the nations; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness.

Eze 31:12
And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off and have left him; upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken in all the watercourses of the land; and all the peoples of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.

Eze 31:13
Upon his fallen trunk do all the fowl of the heavens dwell, and all the beasts of the field are upon his branches:

Eze 31:14
to the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves in their stature, nor set their top amidst the thick boughs, and that none of them that drink water stand up in his height by himself; for they are all given over unto death in the lower parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.

Eze 31:15
Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: In the day when he went down to Sheol, I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed; and I made Lebanon black for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.

Eze 31:16
I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to Sheol, with them that go down into the pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, were comforted in the lower parts of the earth.

Eze 31:17
They also went down into Sheol with him unto them that were slain with the sword, and that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the nations.

Ezekiel now returns to Pharaoh.

Eze 31:18
To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? Yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden, unto the lower parts of the earth; thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised, with them that are slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord Jehovah.

Could say the same about Ezk. 28 refering to adam.

Was Ezk. 31 speaking of the man between Gen 2:15-20?

Maybe the whole thing has been settled, somewhat, everywhere but in my mind, if that be so then I am in need of assistance from those that have a settled knowledge. And what I say here may be silly or useless to some, that's why I seek some settled and sound knowledge, I am in disarray, I suppose not you.
As far as I can understand, everything in Gen. 1 was spoken by God...TO BE... in time.
In Gen. 2 things were formed and motivated. It just seems to me that the man of Gen. 1 would have no problem with keeping the charge of Gen. 2:17, but the living creature of Gen. 2:7 was in a different situation, he was formed to be a tiller of the ground and was put in the garden to take care of it. In Gen. 1 the man had dominion over all.
And out of the living creature came something not at all mentioned in Gen.1 FLESH.  So for me, this flesh was the one ingredient that would not and could not have dominion. In my mind's eye I see the man of Gen. 2 as but an outline, a figure that was meant to be filled, filled with all the attributes of weakness. This was the first man/Adam that Paul spoke of and the last Adam/man is he of Gen.1
TO BE.....in time.
I find the last Adam(Gen.1) to be the ultimate goal of the Lord God for the first Adam(Gen.2) and it is  through the first Adam, me, with all that weakness, HE will bring forth that last Adam.

Well :o), it appears to me that God rested at the end of the sixth day- and again, i dont really care if that is seen as literal or not, but the sequence is there. In hebrews we are told that God rested, "ceased" from His works on the sabbath.

gen. 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

So I see the man of genesis 1:27 and gen 2:7 as the same for several reasons.

For one thing, it says in Genesis 2 that God saw it was not good for man to be alone so He created a woman to be with him.....but we know that in Genesis 1:26,27 it says God created man in His own image, male and female He created them.... so to me it is obvious He had already decided that it was not good for man to be alone and created them male and female. Genesis 2 is the more detailed review of that. Thats just my opinion-  how i read it :o)

Thank you. I have no idea why the Lord keeps me pursuing this thought. For me there just seems to be a distinct difference that I am able to see and not yet understand. The male and female of Gen.1 and man and woman of Gen. 2 just do not compute as being the same equation.
But thank you again. :dsunny:

What I wonder mostly is WHY? Why would the writer of Genesis record 2 distinctly different accounts for the creation, the very beginning of what we study? My feeling, I suppose, that there is something important there for a better understanding.

Just some scriptures and thoughts ---

Gen 1:27
So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him, male and female created He them.

see also Gen 5:2; Matt 19:4; Mark 10:6

Please note the word "likeness" is never mentioned in connection with male and female.

Heb 1:3
... express image of His Person  JFB  person=(Greek) of His substantial essence

1 John 4:8
...God is love  JFB "God is fundamentally and essentially LOVE"

Col 1:3

...dear Son   JFB Greek "the Son of His love"

only begotten Son   Genesis clearly reveals that every living thing begets after own kind...

Love begets after own kind
God is Spirit...begets spirit only begotten Son

human love (male and female) begets after own kind  --- flesh

Man's love, like God (Love), begets
===============================

Likeness seems to be dealing with mind, heart, hands

Man, like God, thinks.... but we know that God's thoughts are higher (much higher) than man's thoughts

Man, like God, feels... but God's mercy is everlasting

Man, like God, creates...well, we all know how fragile are all of man's inventions...

Adam is the figure of the One who was to come... I'm thinking that everything about Adam...from being created (Adam was not begotten), to receiving a helpmate, etc.,  ...is the physical reality through which we learn a great spiritual truth ....... need to pray, meditate some more...

Oh yes re:  Gen 1 and Gen 2.... it seems to me that Gen 1 is telling us WHAT/WHO  God created and Gen 2 is telling us HOW He created

Gen 5:1  This is an account of the births of Adam: In the day of God's preparing man, in the likeness of God He hath made him;
Gen 5:2  a male and a female He hath prepared them, and He blesseth them, and calleth their name Man, in the day of their being prepared.
This is just a repeat of Genesis 2 is it not?
Mat 19:4  And he answering said to them, `Did ye not read, that He who made them , from the beginning a male and a female made them,  Yes I read that and believe it.
Mar 10:9  what therefore God did join together, let not man put asunder.'
What is JFB?
"Please note the word "likeness" is never mentioned in connection with male and female."
There, now that is a wonder, why?
You lose me with these thoughts altogether here...
Col 1:3
...dear Son   JFB Greek "the Son of His love"
only begotten Son   Genesis clearly reveals that every living thing begets after own kind...
Love begets after own kind As the song goes,        "What has love got to do with it."
God is Spirit...begets spirit only begotten Son     This is really confusing to me.
human love (male and female) begets after own kind  ---  there was NO begetting here, the Lord God "built/made" the woman.
Man's love, like God (Love), begets Where did the "love thing"come from? Just asking.
Likeness seems to be dealing with mind, heart, hands    ......seems to be, can you explain that?

Adam is the figure of the One who was to come... I'm thinking that everything about Adam...from being created (Adam was not begotten) BUT Luk 3:38  the son of Cainan, the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.  the only question that I can answer with absolute clarity --

What is JFB?

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown
Bible Commentary

As for the rest, my answers/explanations would very probably just add more confusion...

sheila

well...what I think I perceive in it.......the Genesis 1;27.........I see it as the natural man..[flesh]....

there was no command given to him...not to eat..........  I give you every seed-bearing plant

on the face of the earth and every tree[no mention of God's garden or the two tree's not given]

I see the  Genesis 2 account/speaking of the garden and command and 'breath of life"

as God "forming "the spiritual man...first the natural..then the spiritual.......

....this is not some doctrine I'm trying to put forth..so please don't take it that way....

it's just some 'possibility' that  is nudging me.... :2c:

it is also a repeat of Genesis 1

Gen 1:27  So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.

they are the same in Genesis 1.... Genesis 2....and Genesis 5  all the same one creation, as Paul says "and God made from one man all the nations of the earth.... and also "through one mans transgression all die......through one man's righteous act all are made alive"

also, Abel the son of Adam, Adam the son of God

Adam was created, not procreated....... Paul again says

1Ti 2:13  For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.

also

1Co 15:45  So also it is written, "The first MAN, Adam, BECAME A LIVING SOUL." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

pretty straight-forward to me.... I believe we are working our way back to Paul and have by no means passed him by in any sense...he received the mysteries straight from God, the full counsel of God I think He called it.

In Adam (flesh) or in Christ(spirit) all I see(doesnt mean thats all there is :o)  No third former man, no second former woman

A question I have is,"Why should we pay attention to the authority of Gen 2 & Gen 5 if we can ignore Gen 1;1Tim 2;1Cor 15?

Gen 1:27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
"also, Abel the son of Adam, Adam the son of God
Adam was created, not procreated....... "

You have opened a can of worms for me. The image and likeness of God was male and female and Adam was/is the son of God. How do I know what happened between that male and female of His image?

"pretty straight-forward to me.... I believe we are working our way back to Paul and have by no means passed him by in any sense...he received the mysteries straight from God, the full counsel of God I think He called it."

Yes, I believe that, but still, you say..." he received the mysteries straight from God, the full counsel of God I think He called it."
Does that mean the thoughts and reasoning you and I receive today are not "mysteries straight from God, the full counsel of God"?

I do not want to "ignore" anything the Bible offers. I believe  1Co 15:44  It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
1Co 15:45  And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

I just find a mystery in Genesis 1 man. Why is that man so quickly  matched to  the man of Gen. 2? What attributes do/did they have in common? A man created in the likeness and image of God, I do not believe would have disobeyed Gen 2:17.
I am stayed with the thought that the man of Gen. 1 ...IS that "... last Adam was made a quickening spirit."
Heb. 11 : 1 Now faith is an assumption of what is being expected, a conviction concerning matters which are not being observed;

I ask this kind of question not to make myself into a fool, or that I am trying to be "deep," but they truly trouble me.

micah7:9

My thread has been very politely succumbed by Seth, I say go for it, very interesting.

I am certainly not saying anyone is a fool, or that your question has no merit :o)  I am just saying I think Paul answered the question. How many firsts are there? if there was another male and female in Genesis 1, Why? and based on what we would know of them from two verse(26,27)- what does it matter? If God made man in His image, male and female, once, and it got all of two verses worth of mention, why mention it at all?

It is sort of like when an ETr says, well, that really doesnt mean ALL. Maybe that doesnt really mean FIRST, but Paul calls him the first Adam and Jesus the Last Adam.

So, I think we can look to the scriptures to interpret themselves, not arbitrarily confuse us. I think the apostles, as foundatio stones, gave us something to build on, let everyman be careful what he builds. Thats why I love midrash, and believe it is so important to entering into the unity of the faith. Testing one another is OK, as long as we can love one another while we do it ;o)
