Actually the gold/silver/dross/slag/refining process is often used as a metaphor in the Bible for what God does to and for us.

It's just I've said on these boards I know Christ and Him crucified:  the rest is dross.  I'm just never gonna say that about the pit is all.

PS  I've tried it with slag ... it doesn't have the same ummpphhh.
