The ID system lies in the roots and the chemical cues they secrete.

The finding not only sheds light on the intriguing sensing system in plants, but also may have implications for agriculture and even home gardening.

The study, which is reported in the scientific journal Communicative & Integrative Biology, was led by Harsh Bais, assistant professor of plant and soil sciences at the University of Delaware.

Canadian researchers published in 2007 that sea rocket, a common seashore plant, can recognize its siblings -- plants grown from seeds from the same mother.

Susan Dudley, an evolutionary plant ecologist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and her colleagues observed that when siblings are grown next to each other in the soil, they "play nice" and don't send out more roots to compete with one another.

However, the moment one of the plants is thrown in with strangers, it begins competing with them by rapidly growing more roots to take up the water and mineral nutrients in the soil.

Bais, who has conducted a variety of research on plant signaling systems, read Dudley's study and wanted to find the mechanism behind the sibling recognition.

"Plants have no visible sensory markers, and they can't run away from where they are planted," Bais says. "It then becomes a search for more complex patterns of recognition."

Working in his laboratory at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, a major center for life sciences research at UD, Bais and doctoral student Meredith Biedrzycki set up a study with wild populations of Arabidopsis thaliana.

They utilized wild populations to avoid issues with this common laboratory-bred species, which "always has cousins floating around in the lab," Bais says.

In a series of experiments, young seedlings were exposed to liquid media containing the root secretions or "exudates" from siblings, from strangers (non-siblings), or only their own exudates.

There was a test setup that messured electrical pulses (or something like that) in plants.
Then a scientist entered the greenhouse and started breaking/bruising plants.
Electrical activity went up. The scientist left and the activity went down again (after a while).
Another scientist entered the greenhouse no reaction from the plants.
The scientist left and after another while the first scientist that had hurt the plants returned.
He didn't touch the plants but still the electical activity went up again...

Everything which has life is governed by the "law of the Spirit of life".
Of course, the more elevated the form of existence is, the more sublime the 'spirit of life' functions within. (For instance, man is the highest form of existence in this physical world and therefore shares in a most stupendous 'spirit of life').
Indeed, God who is spirit is the originator of ALL that lives; He is king over all His Creation and therefore rules over all the works of His hands (eg: forms of life).

That's awesome! I very much enjoy toads! They're awesome!  :happygrin: I had one as a pet for about two years, when I was younger. It was sooo cool! It'd eat entire earth worms and would sometimes dig to the very bottom of its aquarium and you could see it squish its belly against the glass at the bottom (to hibernate, I think). LOL If he hate lightning bugs they would glow inside him, and sometimes he'd take "baths" in his little plastic bowl (of sorts). Aww, good lil' toady. That was his nickname: Toady. Although his official name was "Mr. Toad".  :bigGrin:

Well the rainbow bridge poem has been around for a really long time.
It's a sweet little poem about where our beloved animals go... and how they are waiting to reunite with us basically. It's something that a lot of animal lovers find comfort in when their animals pass on. Well, there was just some personal things that happened with rainbows that put a smile on my face and pushed away the tears.  :HeartThrob:
