Is this article backing or condemning universal salvation?  What do you think of it?

At least death is more merciful than people being tormented for all eternity

The last paragraph should provide your answer:

In conclusion, literal death entails the absence of life; and, in the case of the second death, death is literal. The second death, however, will only continue until the consummation. In that glorious day, death will be abolished and all will be vivified, that God may be All in all (1 Cor.15:26,28).

Everything on that site is UR.
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

The article is UR, but it is mostly a rebuttal of a teaching that says, "If it is given to man once to die and then comes the judgment, how can there be a second death" and go on so far as to teach that the second death is a second life lived in an existence among many gross sinners committing nefarious acts of many kinds upon one another.

It goes on to make some points about the use of literal and metaphorical meanings and rightly dividing them.

Kind of overwritten imo, difficult to understand because of the writing style, but clear enough if you have the patience to wrestle it thru.

Myself, I would just conclude it all with this statement..........

Hebrews says "it is given to man once to die and then the judgment"- it doesnt give any details about what may transpire after that judgment.....therefore that verse in Hebrews bears no influence on the verses in Rev 20 about the second death and the lake of fire
The Logos is complete, but it is not completely understood. http://www.hell-is-a-myth.webs.com/

appointed for man to die once and than the judgment

are they  forgetting the   wages of sin is death  ?  as   being  judgment  , though you live in a mortal body still
or what of the death of baptism in Christ ?? and chastening begins in the house of God  , still in the mortal body

so many  hold to the literal death of mortality as an end   ,  I never   see this  as   an end    of all things ,  but new beginnings

God is Spirit      not mortal   in any sense of the meaning !    Our hope in in God  in the SPIRIT OF HIS HOLINESS

The  second death  causes harm ,   not death        I see this as    Rev   9 the sting of death  is in their tails  up from the abyss , satan  as abdadon/ apoyllon   the DESTROYER      loosed for the  little season     locusts , as being an appearance of men  with woman's  with hair    in verse    causing fear  of death  in  teaching lies   and they believe them   , Paul mentions the sting of  death and the victory over death   is TO  BELIEVE/ trust  in JESUS CHRIST   for salvation .  the grace of God given as the gift     , LIFE

Jesus is the reward  !!

LoF can also be seen as dead of the old person. The death of the sinning parts.
That view is hard/impossible to prove I think, but Bible focusses big on spiritual stuff.
The strong point of that view is that the sinners actually learn something or change if you wish.
Being just dead teaches nothing.

From what I gather, the article is saying that metaphors work by presenting a figurative symbol to represent something literal. The example is "the seven stars "are" messengers." The problem I see with the article's position is the confounding of  "figurative" with "spiritual." The implication of the article is that physical death is the REAL death, and spiritual death is not actually a literal thing, and therefore the Lake of Fire is the figure, and physical death is the reality.

Spiritual death is not a figurative symbol for anything. It is a real and literal condition of the spirit taught in scripture. It is death of another KIND, or you might say "a second kind of death." When Jesus says I AM the Life, he is speaking literally about himself being the spiritual life. He is not using himself as a figurative symbol for physical life. No, he literally is our life within.

In fact, in the Bible, physical things themselves become figurative symbols for spiritual realities. Therefore if the Biblical trend tends toward physical pointing to spiritual, the physical image "lake of fire" can be pointing to a spiritual reality called "second death", whatever anyone thinks that is, and such a reading is entirely consistent with scripture.
