Christian Universalism — or what we prefer to call, “The Victorious Gospel” and “Ultimate Restoration” — has its origins in the greater understanding of Acts 3:21 and the Greek word apokatástasis (ἀποκατάστασις), meaning “to restore, to provide restitution,” and pánton (πάντων), meaning “all, every, whole, entire,” together rendered “the restoration of all things.” Some examples of this translation are:

NIV: Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.

KJV: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

NRSV: who must remain in heaven until the time of universal restoration that God announced long ago through his holy prophets.

YLT: whom it behoveth heaven, indeed, to receive till times of a restitution of all things, of which God spake through the mouth of all His holy prophets from the age.

SBL: ὃν δεῖ οὐρανὸν μὲν δέξασθαι ἄχρι χρόνων ἀποκαταστάσεως πάντων ὧν ἐλάλησεν ὁ θεὸς διὰ στόματος τῶν ἁγίων ἀπ’ αἰῶνος αὐτοῦ προφητῶν.

As we can see, salvation, reconciliation (see Col. 1:20), and restoration have been spoken about through the mouths of the holy prophets long ago. There is therefore a growing “return” to the original foundations of the Christian understanding of God’s plans for the eons.

Patristic scholars have been exposing the teaching of Hell (and for that matter eternal punishment) for what it is and always has been: “a tradition of man” — one that has made the word of God of no effect. Hell is thoroughly Latin in origin. It does not come from the original languages of the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures. The “Authorized Version” of the King James Bible (KJV) contained the word “Hell” 54 times from Genesis to Revelation for the words Sheol (שְׁאוֹל), Hades (ᾅδης), and Gehenna (γέεννα). The New King James Version (NKJV) contains the word “Hell” only 32 times. Most other revisions and translations now transliterate Sheol and Hades, translating only Gehenna as “hell.” As a result, editions such as the ASV, ESV, NASB, BSB, and NIV use “hell” only 13 times throughout.

Gary Amirault noted that he had 30 New Testaments and whole Bibles in his possession that do not contain the words “Hell” or “everlasting punishment” even once! What’s going on? The answer is really obvious, except to those who insist on hanging onto these “traditions of men” (Matt. 15:6–9). The scholarship of the Reformation period was just a few steps out of the Dark Ages, but it still held onto the Augustinian, Latin-Roman understanding of what happens to the unsaved after death. Tertullian of Carthage and Augustine of Hippo were the most prominent purveyors of this view — one that was not accepted by the majority of Christians for the faith’s first 500 years.
