I suppose I should say that what I mean by this is obviously that an "eternal hell" doesn't exist. I guess the best way to illustrate it would be by referring to the gospel account of Mark chapter 9:49,50 "For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. Salt is good;..." So basically what He was saying is that the "salting with fire" would be a purifying, cleansing, healing, GOOD fire - could be referred to as a baptism - Matthew 3:11 "...He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." - yes, cleansing can be painful... but in the end God will be all in all.
Adding what seems very obvious to me: there is no worm that doesn't die (except Jesus Christ) - clearly - and in Isaiah 66:24 which Jesus was referring to, these were men who transgressed against Him, but were they doing it in ignorance or did they know Him? I would say that they knew Him, and His unlimited power, and they knew that He "Does Not Die" and that He is "A Consuming Fire"
Well... those are my thoughts on this matter.
I did read your post right below, makes sense, but then if you were reading Mark, I assume you would make the same conclusion that I did if you were ignorant that The Worm Who Dies Not AND The Fire Who Is Not Quenched refers to Jesus Christ abiding in the believers, rather than the carcases. This is the Living Word by the Living Spirit and no more death nor pain etc every thing former is done away in Christ and HIS WORD /SON never returns to Him Void , empty but fulfills all things , by Him and for Him and though Him we can do nothing at all of ourselves , we are totally dependant on Him like a worm that feeds off of His Body , eat my body and drink my blood that you may have LIFE in yourselves . it is always from HIS WORD and Spirit that Life flows from .

Is that the link I wonder where I read about the contrast.. Herod died and was ate by worms.. Jesus likened to the red worm - I've forgotten the name - that fiercely clings to the tree to protect? shield? its eggs, staining the tree red.. Makes me wonder how many times the salvation and, or life message is portrayed in the universe, and in the insect, plant and animal world.. Besides so much in the bible too..
Staining the tree red.. In my heart of hearts I believe it was the only way.. Not to appease God's justice, but it had to be strong enough so all could understand they are forgiven(?) Imagine being one of the world's very worst of cruel and heartless evildoers. What torment they will one day feel as their crimes and abuses march across their mind, while they are in the Presence of Yhvh Almighty! (Another facet of the 2 edged sword? Terror [of judgment] with deep, heart wrenching remorse?
But with remorse begins freedom..!)
The Father, I think, letting things run their course, the choices in life that God has allowed and built around us for His purposes. And letting imperfection (missing the mark, translated sin) run its course.. His hand blocking the paths, but allowing others.. So that even in this (imo)
intense proving ground, the worst of the worst sort of things are being portrayed / allowed to occur and run their course -> apocalypse

I believe too that when john the baptist said he (jesus) will be baptize you with holy ghost and fire he meant the ones that follow jesus and dont come into the lake of fire will be the one baptized with holy ghost. the ones that go to the lake of fire will be baptized with fire to be clensed.
Sure you could say christians are baptized with fire too if you believe that persecution is the fire that christians have to suffer. but i believe to former one more.

I do believe to me it overcoming our carnal and first nature that is an enemy against the Spirit , our new born Spiritual nature in Christ redeeming us first must be risen up out of death by the power of God !
