Title: What is good?
Post by: WhiteWings on November 12, 2014, 10:21:33 AM
Several times in the OT we read nobody is good.

Jesus was sinless, cared for people, healed people and still was not good.

Mark 10:18 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone.

So what does it take to be good?

I believe you are supposed to do good,  but Give God the glory , praise  and honor , because you could not do anything without Him

Its like consider the source  ,where it comes from .
I think  this is Why Jesus said ,This   above verse  and  as long as He was in a flesh and blood body [33 years?]
Every thing He said  and done was to teach us about the Father  while he was in the flesh ........

Yeah I always wonder if He wasn't saying something more to the point of, "You see goodness in me because I have the fulness of God dwelling in me." You know, like you said Rose, "consider the source".

I think Jesus was saying that nobody is good relative to the Father, even him because he was human, but I don't think anybody on earth was ever as good as him or did more good than him. I agree with Rose and Lomarah that we should do good while giving the glory to God, and folks thought Jesus was good because he manifested the love of the Father. I think the problem is the church tells you to do good to be saved, but I think we do good because we're saved. It's really not hard to love rather than hate, but you have to swallow your foolish pride. You need to come to the realization that everybody on this planet is your brother or sister in the human family even though some aren't your brother or sister in Christ. Jesus loved the dregs of society and got the Pharisees tense by doing so. All we have to do is just open our hearts and let God's love flow through us to others. Even if you don't have an opportunity to share the word of God with some folks, you can still share the spirit of God with them even without speaking sometimes. Love really is the powerful force in the universe that overcomes all evil. God is love. "So what does it take to be good?" Just be willing to allow God's love to flow through you to everybody, even those who despise you and persecute you.

"For the entire law is fulfilled in one word, in this: "You shall love your associate as yourself."" (Galatians 5:14)

Mat 5:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

We are told to do what Jesus wasn't able to do?
(for me good=perfect or good is included in perfect)

That is a great place to find out, to go back to the beginning. When the Creator chose to put together the letters tet (describing the action 'to coil') and bet (describing the action 'to enter') with a waw in between (making the concept a continuous state), טוב, what was he describing during each day when he finished? A related word describing the same concrete action is tabal טבל, meaning 'to insert'.

Coil makes me think about a serpent.
But combined??? Let the serpent enter? Sound kinda strange  :dontknow:

Just think actions, not objects. Picture a coiling and entering action, and see how it relates to the other related word I gave, which means to insert, and you have the concrete meaning from which to build your understanding of what good is. :)

coil + enter makes me think of a screw. (EDIT but they didn't exist back then)
So the action is screw in, turn in, twist in?
Sorry, likely its very obvious when you explain, but right now I'm out of guesses.

Hehe, you have the right idea. Anything having to do with the action of inserting. That is the concept of good. Remember on another post of mine where I described the concept of evil as disjointed? Read from verse 2 of Genesis, where it is described as בוהו bohu, which expresses an unoccupied condition, similarly described as unfilled or unfurnished, void. There were things that needed to be 'inserted', which occurred over the next several days. As each insertion took place...light, sky, land, plants, heavenly clock, animals, and man, he referred to those days as being inserted, filled, furnished, or more abstactly, as you put it, 'as intended'.

A simple explanation I use to explain this is to look at a lamp. It has a cord, but until that cord is plugged in is it 'good'? No, the plug need to be inserted into a socket. If it does not work, what else is missing to make it 'good'? A bulb. So you insert a bulb and now, when it lights up, it is as intended, inserted...or abstractly...good.

Make sense?

In BDB I find Teth/Tet is to " avoid." Found nothing for "waw or beth/bet" But that is me just looking. The word for good again in BDB is "excellent" which certainly has a high or low grade, highest when God said it.

I found that from a book on the Qabala..... tet/tayt as the female energy; vaw/waw as the male agent; bayt/bet everything that exists. I can see an excellence in that.

I find your insert and coil interesting as well.

So: "...and God saw it was inserted..."?
I could see God inserted things in a "void creation"

But that would make this verse look very odd.

Mark 10:18 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone.

Mark 10:18 "Why do you call me inserted?" Jesus answered. "No one is inserted--except God alone.

Most concepts of the Semitic language do not make sense to most today, since we are taught to think abstractly. God being 'inserted' in the ultimate sense makes perfect sense to me in that, there is nothing lacking in him for him to function as he intends himself to. We are only 'good', or inserted to the extent that God inserts what we need in order to operate as we were intended. The insertion we need for that to take place is the spirit, and our awareness of His presence in us.

Not at all. Notice that Yeshua did not say that he was not good. I believe he was trying to drive this man, who thought himself good because he kept the physical commandments according to the letter, to realize that, on our own, apart from God, we all lack, we all fall short, there is something that needs to be inserted, if you will. Yeshua was simply describing the human experience, including his own as a man, not that he was not good, but that his goodness was dependent on God's insertion in him, that he did whatever the Father did, and spoke only whatever his Father spoke, etc. He knew he could do nothing of himself. This man, like man in general, had the idea that he could be complete, inserted, on his own, by his own actions.

Very true, our goodness is only relative compared to God's absolute goodness.

Eph 1:23 23 which is his body, the fulness of Him who is filling the all in all,

1 Cor 15:28 28 and when the all things may be subjected to him, then the Son also himself shall be subject to Him, who did subject to him the all things, that God may be the all in all.

Can those alls be replaced with good?

I have often wondered if Christ was testing them. They thought he was a prophet but that's not the extent of who he was. In other words, if they didn't believe in him, they shouldn't be calling him Good. You shouldn't call ordinary men good

I've often heard that the Hebrews thought good meant holy.

If only God is good that excludes all others from being good; including Jesus.

QuoteI believe he was trying to drive this man, who thought himself good because he kept the physical commandments according to the letter,
The man called Jesus good and Jesus replied with that He (Jesus) isn't good.

Mark 10:17-18 (HRB2012)
17 And He having gone out into the highway, running up and kneeling down to Him, one questioned Him, Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
18 But Yahshua said to him, Why do you call Me good? No one is good except One, YAHWEH.

Quoteto realize that, on our own, apart from God, we all lack, we all fall short, there is something that needs to be inserted, if you will.
That was clear before I started this thread. It's just I would have thought that Father, Son and HS all are good.

QuoteYeshua was simply describing the human experience, including his own as a man, not that he was not good, but that his goodness was dependent on God's insertion in him, that he did whatever the Father did, and spoke only whatever his Father spoke, etc. He knew he could do nothing of himself. So perfect following of the law (which means sinless), being kind etc, just makes 'you' a better person but not a good person?

If so nobody is bad only satan is bad. :dunno2:

Exactly. That ties in to my point perfectly. He was getting this man to think. Yeshua was not saying that he was not good. If we remember that he is the Word that tabernacled in flesh, the very Word with God in the beginning, we can see how he truly was 'good', in a way the Jews did not believe, as it is written:

so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
(Isa 55:11)

I note that Yeshua did not say to the man, 'I am not good', but instead he said 'Why do you call me good?' He was getting the man to think.

We cannot isolate this verse from the rest of the testimony of the writings, which do speak of people as good:

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous.
(Pro 13:22)

Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man,
(Luk 23:50)

Concerning Barnabas...
for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord.
(Act 11:24)

The sense in which God is good in a way different from anyone or anything else is that his goodness is not because of anything outside of himself, whereas anything and anyone that is good is only truly so because of his insertion.

I think the Hebrew concept of insertion makes sense because I think God inserted light into the darkness, and I think spirit is the power inside all matter that holds it together and keeps it moving, the nuclei, electrons, and protons. It is God's spirit inside every living thing that gives it life and keeps it alive. God breathed into Adam's nostrils the breath of the living, and he became a living soul.

Ronen

I know that he is called the evil one, and that is true, because his acts amount to a disjointing of what is inserted. I do not personally have a problem with that tension, of the one sense of him being evil, and also the other sense of him being good...anymore than the concept of both good and evil coming from the mouth of God, and yet he is only good, not evil.

I agree, and he will eventually lose his power that he was given to do so and will be reconciled to God through Christ's blood on the cross when all on earth and in the heavens are at the consummation of the eons.

I can agree with that. But He also said that He Himself isn't good because only the Father is good.

I can see your point, but still am confused. Very often He just pointed out flaws (Pharisees, srcibes).
He does so in that verse too. But the main difference is that He includes Himself in in the group that does wrong.

I'm aware of that view. On an Orthodox Jewish site satan is described as
an almost robot like creature following orders. They don't think satan will be saved but willingly gets destroyed when his tasks are completed.

You will not find the information I am sharing from any of the western source materials, as far as concordance, lexicon, etc. The Qabala is more into the spiritual mystical meanings of the letters, while I deal explicitly with the concrete actions of those letters.

The concrete, got it.

Several times in the OT we read nobody is good.

Jesus was sinless, cared for people, healed people and still was not good.

Mark 10:18 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone.

So what does it take to be good?

To be Good you have to start by being Dead.
Then you have to have been made alive by the Spirit.
Then you can become one with God who is Good.
IMO
Didn't have Jesus the full force of the Spirit in Him?

I am not sure what you mean by full force of the Spirit.

Did rising from the dead add anything to his force of Spirit?
No, but it's proof He had the spirit whole His life.

What does that verse mean? Not what it seems to mean at first reading because I think everybody knows at least one person that has the spirit, but my guess is that nobody would claim it's present as prominent as it was in Christ 2000 years ago...

john 7:38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'" 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

acts 2:33 Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.

I personally believe Jesus did not receive the "Spirit without measure" until He was glorified and ascended, seated at the right hand

I was riding my bicycle contemplating this thread, and this verse came to mind.

James 1
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Why do you call me good?  Because you are the perfect gift from above.  There is none good but God, and every good and perfect gift is from God.

:iagree:
I.am not sure what measure of Spirit was added to the ascended Christ
But Jesus became MORE.

It's more of a figure of speech. A human can be good, but compared to God our goodness is nothing. Because, did we ever bring life into the world? Did we create this world? Do we bring the change of seasons, feed all the animals, make peace and repel the desires for war? Every comparison of human goodness to God's goodness is bound to fail.

But we can speak about human goodness on our level. That would mean, not hating anybody, helping the common good, not being cruel to men or animals, not being greedy, the whole slew of what can be said about the virtues.

Lastly, I would not base a theology just on something that is said in the bible somewhere. Many of the speeches of Jesus were held in arguments and debates between him and the jews who always wanted to catch Jesus in something that he said. These were not civil discourses. When someone came to Jesus and began with "Good master", this was the innocent introduction to something evil, the bait that Jesus had to swallow so He would have to "like" the speaker and speak nice to him instead of getting to his prophetic points. So Jesus uses the hyperbole of saying that nobody is good except God to end the argument.

Of course you can be a good human person. Just break no laws and be kind to everyone. That's all that is needed.

What is good? I have that thought every time I read Genesis. Rather than say "good" question I will say swell question. I have no answer. :dsunny:
I would say in Genesis good means "as intended", "good for the purpose in mind".

Isaiah 45:7King James Version (KJV)

I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.

How can you know good without evil? Does evil serve good? And if so, is evil really a part of the good?
But then if evil is good, but good can do no evil, and if evil rises up against evil, how can evil survive?

How does UR answer the question of evil?  :declare: :Peace2:

Evil can't survive, and won't.

For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death. For He has put all things in subjection under His feet. But when He says, "All things are put in subjection," it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him. When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all. 1 Cor 15:25-28

For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. Col 1:19,20

And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself. John 12;32

That's why Jesus told us not to return evil for evil, but to overcome evil with good. That is what He did, once and for all, at the cross. :o)

Something that is good ,is good.
You would not describe the good being done, by describing the evil it is not doing.

You would not describe Evil as the good it was not doing.

A good action is not the absence of an evil action.

...the 'Good' shepherd lays his life down for the sheep.  God[good] was/is reconciling the world through Christ........

satan is a robotic artifice......a craftsman's hammer.....that when finished with it...it raises itself up against He that Weilds it....

and is destroyed...for after it has destroyed that which God has decreed it...it shall be destroyed.   a mere tool, used of the Lord

to educate His children in this exercise in evil.

liken it unto chess..with God in control of both negative and positive expierences

God, the Creator, originated both good and evil. Without evil there is no knowledge of what is good. All is of God.

A quote from Gary R. Habernas & Michael R. Licona

The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus

Chapter 10 - Who Did Jesus Think He Was ?

Quote.. It may be that we currently live in the best of all possible worlds where free beings are involved. God cannot accomplish logical absurdities. Is it possible for God to create a married bachelor in the strictest sense of these terms? Can God smell the color of nine or draw a square circle? If God is unable to accomplish logically contradictory actions, this does not limit His omnipotence. But how does this relate to the problem of evil? Perhaps it is logically impossible to have a world in which all free beings always freely choose to live righteously. As long as there is a reasonable possibility, one cannot claim that the matter has been decided. We may very well live in a world that has an optimized balance of the greatest amount of good with a minimal amount f evil. Thus, evil does not render impossible the existence of an all-good and all-powerful God.

Adam at first had no knowledge of evil.
He knew that God and his creation was Good.
