What is the Christian answer to this atheist?
Simple there is no slavery in the Bible at all.
Yeah, it speaks about other nations that enslave people. Likely a few Jews did so too. BUT... it's not allowed. There isn't a single verse that approves it.
At least the way slavery is understood today. When people thing about slavery they think about the movie "Roots" in which black people were almost whipped to death if they didn't work hard enough.
Bible slavery is this:
If a person had unpayable debts (his own fault) he was sold into slavery. A rich person paid his debts and the 'slave' had to work for free until he paid his debt to the "slave owner".
But the slave had to be treated fairly. Good and plenty of food. Not abused. Place to sleep. Time to rest. Basically the slave had the same rights as a hired worker, but didn't receive wages. The max time of slavery was limited too
If that's slavery most of the western world is enslaved because many work for the bank to pay of the debt they got themselves in when the took mortgage to buy a house.

Not for foreign slaves, there was no limit on their term of service. Was there different punishments for Hebrew and foreign slaves?
