Eden was possibly derived from the Akkadian word edinu based on the Sumerian word eden, meaning "plain, steppe." Akkadian Bīt Adini refers to the region on both sides of the Euphrates. It was then secondarily associated with the homonymous but unrelated Hebrew root 'ādan meaning enjoyment. However the LXX seems to derive this word directly from the Hebrew root 'ādan by translating it "garden of delight."
So Eden means plain/steppe or delight.

8 And LORD God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
The Garden was in a land called Eden, and that land was east from a certain reference point.
Moses wrote Genesis just after he left Egypt. That means that (the Garden of) Eden was east from where Moses was standing.
Viewed from the Garden of Eden Egypt was in the west.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

Nod is east of Eden and a city is build there. The location of Nod is unknown but one of the oldest cities is Jericho; dated as old as 9000BC. Jericho was located just north of the Dead Sea.
Viewed from the Garden of Eden Jericho was in the east.
So the Garden was between Egypt and Jericho.
Egypt ---- Garden ---- Jericho
If the above is correct it would rule out a lot of possible locations because the distance between Egypt and Jericho isn't that big. It rules out the often assumed location somewhere in Iraq.

Verse 10 gives a lot of information. The river splits into four other rivers. Rivers usually split in a delta.
That's the opposite of 4 rivers merging into one, which mostly happens on higher grounds/mountains.
So if we are able to locate a river that splits into 4 rivers we should makes sure the river splits downstream. This will remove a lot of possible locations!
Also note the verse only states the river flowed out of the land of Eden. It doesn't say the river flowed out of the Garden which is a small part of the land.. It could be, but that information isn't in the verse....
That understanding has huge implications when we read the next part of the verse "from there it was divided".
If "there" is the Garden of Eden then it simply means the Garden is located on the spot where the river splits.
If "there" is the land of Eden then in theory the splitting of the river could be many miles away from the actual garden.
Another hint is the word "heads". It has different meanings in Hebrew. Rivers. Heads. Headwaters
But a river that splits into 4 isn't a start/head of a river. The head of the river could be hundreds of miles upstream. According to cometary in the Jewish Tanach head means a spring.
That means the main river goes underground and feeds 4 different springs. Those springs are the source/head/start of 4 new rivers.
In that region there is lots of seismic activity. Earthquakes can submerge and raise rivers. It may sound unlikely or even impossible. It isn't...

The water flows to the Mediterranean Sea and the dead sea. Living water is water that supports life. Unlike the salt water in the Dead Sea.

In "winter and summer" is another clue. The river will even flow outside the rain season. So it's source isn't rainwater.

The stream will be so huge it turns the Dead Sea in a fresh water lake with many fish. That must be a huge spring fed by a strong underground river.

Many Bibles use the word "mist" but others (Greek) Bibles use the also correct words "flow" and "stream". That surely sounds like a spring. During Jesus time that spring was still active. It was a main water supply for Jerusalem and was used in the Temple.
Due to seismic activity the output of the spring can vary a lot over the centuries.
Ancient sources state that the Pishon and Gihon rivers where subterranean. Gihon means "Bursting forth" Could be about a spring again.
The Tigris and Euphrates are surface rivers that are well know. But the other two are never found.... because everyone looks on maps that only show things on the surface....
Both Tigris and Euphrates originate in East-Turkey and empty into the Persian Gulf. Both flow over the surface.
The Jewish 1st century historian Josephus wrote there was a common belief that there was an underground river Gihon that connected the Nile and the sea of Galilee and sprung up from the Tabga spring. One of the proof for that is the migration of fish. Tabga spring was near Capernaum where Jesus read from the Temple Scroll.

30 This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
The spring water was routed to Jerusalem. That spring was called Gihon spring and was located next to the Temple. It was tapped and flowed into the Temple.

The area around the Dead Sea once was very fertile after the destrution of Sodom and the other 4 cities it became wasteland. Fertile land requires lots of fresh water. So there should have been a river. Could the subterranean river discovered in 1993 once have watered the area when it was still above the ground before the earthquake that destroyed Sodom cut it off? Was it one of Edens 4 rivers?
We have quite a bit information how large the area was. Israel wasn't really the promised land. It was the Garden part of it. The real promised land is called Greater Israel. The original land of Eden. More about that later.

Arabah is a large area surrounding the Dead Sea which in ancient times was called Sea of Arabah.
Prior to the destruction of Sodom (book of Genesis) the area was fertile farmland.
Isaiah who lived long after that event prophesises that the land will be fertile again. There will even be springs in that desert. Springs need underground sources. Surely God could create underground sources when needed. But I think the source is already there but the outlets are blocked. They get unblocked by the earthquake that splits the mount of Olives.

Israel is one huge mess of seismic activicy.
When Lot escaped sodom the dead sea didn't exist. It was Gihon.
Goto the North of teh persian gulf and draw a perpendicular on it's west coast.. That's Pison. -> A small part of it was called Jordan river.
Massive MASSIVE amounts of underground water have been found. It could very well be that in Eden there was a spring so huge it fed all 4 rivers.
When the water ejects into the air (how you say that in English?) it sprays out. Just like a fountain in the park. Could even have been a geiser like Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park. That creates mist.
Anyway when Lot fled away everything sank into the abbys..... The Dead sea was formed. The Gihon which fed the Pison was cut blocked miles under the ground.
Then I got side-tracked by New Jerusalem. Being 1500 miles square it seems to cover the whole area mentioned in the OT. Holies is Jerusalem?

For a rough indication of Eden take a map of that area.
Draw a line trough the center of the Dead Sea. That's about SSE.
Draw a perpendicular on that line that ends at the north tip of the Persian Gulf.
Locate Euphrates and Tigris flowin from Turkye to the Persian Gulf.
The north border is the coast line of the Mediterranean Sea.

David counted heads there. Abraham nearly sacrificed his son there. God ordered to build Temples there. Jesus died there. It's clear Jesus will return to that spot.
Everything will be made new. I guess that includes the Garden of Eden. Wouldn't it be obvious Jesus would be in that Garden too? Well He won't be if the Garden is in Iraq as many think. Mt Hermon is said to be the spot the gods visited the earth. They have lebanon as the birthplace of all the gods. Now if the gods are adam and his family the sons of god, coming down to the daughters of men, they would be coming down from the mountains of the holy land.
It's also called gate of the gods/nephilim.
But what's Biblical?

Just wondering - is that 9 stones or ten?
Is gold a stone...?
Not by our defenition.
But the Bible sometimes classifies things differently as we do today.
For example a bat is bird and a whale is a fish.
We classify them as mammals.
Besides of that there are 12 stones.
I'll post something about them in a new thread later today.

BTW Ezekiel 28:13 is describing the breastplate of satan....
Ezek. 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God
Ezek. 28:16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
BTW i think his breastplate was gold inlayed with 9 stones.
On topic: Eden was (partly) on the mountain of God. I think that's mt Moriah but Mt Hermon as suggested by Red isn't impossible either I guess. Both are linked to the presence of God.
So I think Ezekiel 28:13,16 rule out present day Iraq/Mesapotania.

Could it be representing something other than Satan I wonder? Verse 15 says that he was righteous and blameless from the time of his creation until iniquity was found in him. Yet we know that he was a liar from the beginning. :dontknow:
