I just downloaded the newest version of Internet Explorer which is Internet Explorer 8, beta 2. It's got a couple of features that I've noticed so far that I'm really liking, but at the same time I'm already either noticing bugs or perhaps that it's too new for the sites that I visit. For those of you that are the type that might HAVE TO HAVE the latest whatever, then here's the link for it:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta)
But a few minutes into actually using it, and you might be like me in wondering if you made a mistake in downloading it too soon and if perhaps you might need to re-download 7 or 6 until they get I.E.8 a little smoother. I'm going to try some of the obvious tricks with rebooting my system and checking a few settings, and if that gets a couple of annoying things to go away with trying to use IE8 on this forum, then I'll post any relevant details here.
When it's perfected, or perhaps if beta 3 ever comes out, depending on how much work they're putting into this, this might actually be the very best Internet Explorer yet.
But I downloaded it a few minutes ago and have already noticed some annoying things, like titles of individual threads being missing on a particular board. And when I visited the administrative part of these boards, a pretty important link was missing until I reloaded the page. And I can't even describe what it's doing to this page that you post your post on. Like anything new, maybe it improves a bit with usage, so I'll keep you posted on whether I had to redownload an earlier version of Internet Explorer.
Part of what got me to jump the gun and to go ahead and download the newbie was because I'd recently, just within the last few weeks, downloaded IE7 and hadn't been liking it in the least because of the totally different arrangement of some things. I'm one of those guys that when I like the arrangement of where my stuff is at, it's a capital offense to mess with my stuff. I'm quick on my feet in any situation and can readily respond to any crisis situation with perfect ease, or even many to most people situations, but my kryptonite is for my stuff to be moved 'cause I get locked into my pattern of where my stuff is at and I'm one unhappy puppy when I can't find it. So, my thinking was that ANYTHING would be better than IE7.
By the end of the day, I may wind up being in IE6 again, wishing it was as easy to make this XP into 2000pro 'cause to me that was a smooooth system that worked best for my particular needs.
I never really liked MSIE. And it's getting worse every release.
The enigine is fine but the interface
I'm using http://www.morequick.com/indexen.htm as the interface since version 5 or 6
So MSIE hasn't chanced for me in years :laughing7:
I personally use Mozilla Firefox, always have since IE7 was released as I was never keen on it

If you decide to try MF and set it to the default browser, you will be able to import your bookmarks from IE

Thank for the link. I may have to use either that or something else as a bridge so that I can get IE8 off of my computer and then get the IE6 or 7 that I'm more comfortable with. I tried redownloading version 7 anticipating a potential problem with having the newest, latest and trying to go back in time too far, but even 7 couldn't get installed because I had the newest version. Yet, I'm needing to check the accuracy of something that I'm seeing on my own website with this computer. It could just be more weirdness from IE8, or it could be an issue that I'll have to edit. I've had website programs move my text around before, so it's not so strange that it's automatically a bug with IE8. I just wish I'd checked that particular article before ""upgrading."" It's basically what I posted on the Matthew 25:46 thread, so it's not anything anyone around here hasn't already seen. Some text seemed missing and I found part of it at the end of my article. Seems like a glitch with a recent server update, but I can't be 100% sure with IE8 and I don't want to make things worse by going into edit mode and making it look good to IE8 and to nobody else :sigh:
I wish I'd burned IE7 to a disc before downloading 8 'cause then it would be as simple as dumping 8 and loading the CD. I might be able to download it from the website straight to a disc if all else fails and then dumping 8. IE8 is really great in some ways, but too many potential problems in it's current incarnation for my needs.

Even better, so I don't have to lose probably a thousand links while I'm figuring out what I want to do -- if I'll go back to IE at all. Again, though, given a few months, IE8 will probably be very sweet -- once everyone has screamed at Microsoft about all of the problems they've had with the beta version. I may redownload it next summer, but for right now IT'S GOTTA GO :laughing7:
Someone might say to me that beta versions are always a gamble, which is true. Microsoft had a beta version of an anti-spyware program once upon a time that they've either abandoned or that now costs a bunch of money. But while that was a beta version, it was really sweet at really cleaning crap off of a computer.
First I tried to redownload IE7 and my computer said that I couldn't install it because I had a newer version of IE installed. So, I downloaded firefox and then dumped IE8 and rebooted my computer. When it came back on and went online, there was IE7 again! Although I've got firefox as well on this computer. My one complaint about firefox, if there's a way of exclusively using it and deleting IE completely from this computer, is that I couldn't find a setting for changing my text size on firefox. That's an important setting for me for some of the people that I allow to use this computer. Does anyone know where the setting is for increasing the text size on firefox?? On internet explorer it's with the "View" menu at the top of the screen, but I've not yet found a similar setting on firefox for being able to make the text bigger on any of the menus.

http://www.bookmarkbuddy.net/
A great little program for managing bookmarks.
If you prefer flashy graphics don't even bother clicking the link.
If you prefer something that does everything you need, never crashes, and low resources usage... give it a try

I tried several alternative browers in the past. Including http://www.opera.com/ (the inventors of tabbed browsing)
Many of the alternative browsers where (a lot) better than MSIE at that time.
The problem was that MSIE loads every page and others not because keeping to certain standards.
I want to say a again that was at least 5 years ago. Enough time for a revolution in computerland...
The advantage of Greenbrowser is that you still are using MSIE. You still have all the MSIE configuration options.
Plus a new set from Greenbrowser.
Because it's really MSIE running in the background the bookmarks still work as they did before.
That said; about any respectable browser can import bookmarks.

I don't think you can delete IE but you can set firefox as the default manually, if it hasn't already been set to default upon installation
Launch firefox (there will be an icon placed on the desktop by default at installation) ---> go to tools---->advanced---->click on advanced tab--->make sure the check mark is ticked by system defaults always check to see if firefox is the default browser on startup
To import the bookmarks from IE manually to--->go to File---->import (a pop up box will say (Import options, bookmarks, passwords and other data from Microsoft Internet Explorer
To change the font size etc go to ---->tools---->options---->content--->fonts and colors (change it there)
To place icons on the taskbar such as copy/new tab/refresh/history etc---->view--->toolbars--->customise---->(click and drag to taskbar)
IE8 is still a nightmare, although I don't believe it's "beta" any more. Lots of sites and programs still haven't caught up. If you upgrade 7 to 8 and learn on your own the hard way, you can dump 8, reboot your system and it'll revert to 7. Same thing if you upgraded a 6 to a 7 and have been sick of it ever since. Might have to look for it in your menu if it dumps your shortcut to it from your desktop and create a new shortcut. At least this time when I tried it, I had a better idea of what was going on when this computer started acting like the legion demoniac that Jesus had to cast legion out of. Couldn't spell the "g" word all of a sudden. I use firefox for some things 'cause some things will tell you straight out that IE7 isn't going to work with it. But firefox and other browsers I've seen are still a bit annoying for me. There's not necessarily a right or wrong about that. Just depends on what you're comfortable with and what you need it for.
I noticed Microsoft said IE8 is free for now so i wonder if they are going to start charging for it when past its beta state?
I hope not. But it's got some sweet features to it, if websites, including this forum, could just recognize it and be able to work with it. But that's going to be a few updates for quite a few servers.
Make the switch to Mozilla and free yourself from Microsoft! (at least for browsing)
I've rarely used IE for the past 5 years - I pretty much use firefox for all browsing and never really have a problem.
The risk of IE is not really worth it for me - there are so many security holes, and it is the #1 target to be exploited by the hackers and script kiddies. Even now, after they have fixed so many security holes, there are still new ones being found.
I'd rather stick with firefox and feel confident I won't fall victim to an attack.
My neighbor down the street just recently got a virus that causes his keyboard to stop working periodically. How did he get it? He went to a web page - and he was using IE. Didn't download anything, didn't click on anything (other than going to the web page that had been hacked). Just the act of viewing a web page can get you infected when using IE - no thanks.
I use firefox at home and safari (apple's browser) at work.

I understand that. I've got some of the finest antiviral/antispyware/antiadware programs money can buy on this computer, that specify professional edition rather than home edition, and I've had recent issues with IE closing out on me when I've been waiting on pages to load, even after having already run a really good registry repair program, being sure there's no adware, worms, spyware, viruses, shareware, etc. For me, firefox loads too slowly, isn't able to accept all of the internet plugins that it needs to accept, and really gets in the way of many of the downloads that I do. It can be really sweet on some pages, but embarrassingly awkward with other sites. And, it never gives me the look for websites that I'm accustomed to. I'm still sampling other browsers, though, but haven't found another one that's at least as good for my particular needs. I've had problems with firefox and other browsers when trying to access the secure sections of my websites to edit them.

WhiteWings,
This Green Browser is really starting to grow on me recently. One of the things that immediately sold me on it was immediate access/reminder to/of the baidu search engine, since I'm always very curious as to how UR websites are getting into the Orient. At first I thought it didn't do tabs until I found out that it just worded it differently with "open in another window" and "blank page." I'm finding this one to be the most stable of the 3 that I've got on this computer: IE7, firefox, and Green Browser (link above if anyone's slow. lol) I love the homepage that Green Browser takes you to. The google feature integrated with mine seems to be defaulted to Google China, but that's genuinely ideal for me BECAUSE of the concerns that I've had about our websites being accessible by/in the Orient, and the heart that God's given me for that part of the world.
And if you remember the basic layout of Google already, then it's just Chinese Characters but the same arrangement that Google doesn't vary from. Far left top link being the web, next over being images, et. al., on down the line to videos and whatever. Yesterday, I went ahead and committed the computer to Green Browser being my default browser. I could never bring myself to give that setting to firefox 'cause although firefox is more stable and has better video quality than IE7, in my opinion, it would still sometimes crash on me pretty badly over facebook. And I didn't like that print on a page wasn't as easy to read as it is on IE7. I'm really wishing Green Browser came standard with computers instead of IE.
If I had the resources for designing my own custom browser, I wouldn't have varied very much from Green Browser's layout and features, although tabs would have been tabs and opening in another window would have simply been that, i.e. opening another window, to keep it simple for those seeking to transition 'cause people are so immature these days that I can just see the temper tantrums if folks can't find what they're looking for on Green Browser where they expect to find it from the safari or IE6 or IE7 that they're using.
The one thing that's sometimes annoying is the logo being in the top right of the screen, whether the browser window is up or minimized, and that doesn't always work as a link to take you back to your browser, so are you aware of any settings for going ahead and turning that off from looking like something burned into the screen? I was experimenting with various settings yesterday since Green Browser's got so many more than IE and firefox COMBINED for customizing it, but I wasn't finding the one to take that little logo off of the screen. It would be less annoying if it was more watermark as some TV channels are having their trademark logo at the bottom of the screen. Every once in a while television channels get annoying with that when it's blocking a phone number from view or whatever, but when it's light enough, it's less annoying. Would likely be the same way with the Green Browser's little icon in the middle of the browser if it were more transparent. Is there an off switch on that one, a checkbox for shutting that off?? That was one of the few things that kept me from making it my default browser any sooner.

It's just a translation from Chinese. I think the average American would have used other words in various places.
Even the website name...
I think the translation is done by the KJV team :laughing7:

To my best knowledge GreenBrowser doesn't work without IE.
IE is made of 2 main parts.
a] The engine. The part that does the real work. Fetching and rendering (=layout and stuff)
b] The interface. The part what you see.
GreenBrowser replaces part b
Using IE to render stuff it means it handles all the same way IE does.

You likely mean the green G
That's the monitor.
Right click on it and deselect the option and it's gone. You can drag it to a better spot too.
Switch on (and off): Tools => More Tools => Monitor
Ctrl+G (the Collector) can be handy.

I assume you are aware you can choose another default search engine?
And set all kind of options. I for example let Google show 100 hits per page instead of 10.
Or "special" setting like real time search: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/make_google_search_real-time_with_this_url_hack.php
QuoteIf I had the resources for designing my own custom browser, I wouldn't have varied very much from Green Browser's layout and features, although tabs would have been tabs and opening in another window would have simply been that, i.e. opening another window,
I think the name is good.
As you are already aware you can open as many tabs as you wish.
The open in new window isn't really about tabs.
Say you browse on TM. When you stay on the site the new page opens in the same window.
But when you click on a off-site link it opens in a diffrent window. Or not... That's what the setting is for.
I can be overruled by using shift.
Just try the following. When reading this page hold shift and click "show new topics"
That's what "new window is about"
Every time I download Explorers Windows #8 thingy,
it "slows down" my computer........
I have to remove the program..........start over.
I have done it about 5 times.
I noticed just today that the date on the last one
is Oct. 13 which is two or 3 days ago......
So they are probably getting this from all of us........that
it has bugs.
#7 works fine for me anyway.
