I have posted this information before, mostly on the religious sub-forums over at abovetopsecret.com. I didn't get much traction with it, but that should not surprise any of you. In fact, the last reply I got over there to my UR ideas was that I was teaching the doctrines of devils. <sigh> So be it.
OK, here it is:
My dad grew up on a farm, and other family members had root cellars, but his father's place did not. A root cellar is nice, as it keeps things at a fairly constant temperature and humidity. You can keep bushels of apples or whatever in a root cellar all winter, and it's handy if you don't have electricity, like in the old days. If you don't have a root cellar, this is what you do (as my dad told me): You dig a trench in the ground, to below the local frost line. You line the bottom of the trench with straw, and place over that a layer of apples, potatoes, turnips, whatever. Not all fruits and veggies do well with this treatment - I don't think tomatoes would do, so they get canned. Remember, we're talking about the old days. On top of the fruits/veggies, you put another layer of straw, and cover the whole thing with the dirt you dug out. So...what do you call that? Yeah, it's called HELLING! You hell the potatoes, the apples, etc!! We know that "hell" means "the grave," but here we see that it can also mean "to put in a grave." You simply dig a grave for the fruits/veggies, and they are in hell. Noun and verb.
Now, this is where it gets really interesting - after a while, when you need the fruits/veggies, you open up the "grave" they are in, reach between the straw layers, and pull out what you need. Thus the fruits/veggies get "resurrected"! When the goodies are all removed, you then have no further use for the "hell." How about that?!
