The Great Awakenings
Am I in error in my reasonings that all these "Awakenings," all were "awakened [if they were awoke at all]" by the threat of preachers pounding and shouting out in great oration of an "eternal hell fire of torment and torture?" Assuredly awakened to the utter dispair, that babies, parents, all loved ones who did not believe in Jesus Chirst, were forever lost in the terrible and horrible place called hell.
So my questioned is, just what is so great about these awakenings, if each time folks were in fact, kept asleep to the Truth of what The Father and His Son revealed in The Word?
That God is Love. That there is no place of eteranl torment. And I'm sure that it is known that there were men/women who knew the Truth that Jesus is the Savior of the World, in those periods, and that only few "awoke" to that Truth, for surely some heard and did awake.
Thought this would make for a good discussion, but then again?
The First Great Awakening began in 1720 and lasted many, many years.
Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield
The Second Great Awakening was strongest in the western states, following the revival at Cane Ridge in Kentucky, and also in the "burned over" district of upstate New York.[3]
New denominations included several major religious denominations, groups, and societies including Seventh-day Adventists, Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, and the Latter Day Saint movement.
The abolition movement emerged in the North from the wider Second Great Awakening 1800-1840.
The Third Great Awakening in 1880-1910 was characterized by new denominations, very active missionary work, and also the Social Gospel approach to social issues.[4]
The Fourth Great Awakening is a debated concept that has not received the acceptance of the first three.
Advocates such as economist Robert Fogel say it happened in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
This post has been read 16 times and not one person has a thought................hummmmm? :dontknow:
I remember reading something by one of the Eby type guys, can't remember which one---He said, we are the Elijah troop announcing the second coming of Christ.
That would qualify as a really great awakening.
So I wait.
As to past great awakenings, all I can say is, the faith must be passed down from generation to generation, and how that happens is a bit of a mystery to me as I look around and see hardly any faith everywhere I look. So these are perhaps tourch bearers for the next generation.
I didn't write any of this because I figured you wouldn't like it. But, since you asked...
I wasn't sure what to say. Because I see much error, but also, as you said Molly, there's still at least a measure of faith being passed down.
I like what Gary says; we're living in an age of a mixture of truth and error. Pray for the day when the veil is lifted, and His righteousness covers the earth!
The Lord ALWAYS has a remnant — without fail.
We're just alone in a strange city.
Luke 18:8
"..... announcing the second coming of Christ." And just when is this "second coming?" I have read of no second coming.
P.S. "... I figured you wouldn't like it." If that "you " is" refering to me, who cares if and what I "like?"
"..Because I see much error,.." Jabcat
What untruths? Just wondering. :dontknow:
So, if there were "great awakenings," what were they awoken to? I what ever generation?
Do we await a second coming? Is there a second coming? Or was there already a second coming and a third and so on? What is the second coming?
Is hell real? Is there really a place of eternal torment? At least the translators use and put the word "hell" in there, where is or are the words, "second coming," in the Bible? Yet a second coming has become [a]the doctrine taught today. Is this second coming doctrine yet another great awakening?

mixture of law and grace
"church" traditions (all the pagan influences and connections to the "mother church" of Rome)
hell/eternal torment
+ others
Re: great awakenings...I personally probably wouldn't call them that. I think they may have had some type of revivals with some people at least acknowledging God more, but again, much of it still mixed with the errors mentioned above. I'm one that believes these things were necessary in God's plan, including Luther's progress of at least somewhat breaking away from the Catholic "church". IMO, that (the "Reformation"), as well as the other "great awakenings" still have a long ways to go before reaching the point of "God all in all" - and only God can bring that about. All in His timing. :2c:
Great! That is a very well said and I must agree. In my opinion the great awakenings are steps. Yeah and the Reformation that Luther was used for, in my opinion was more of a great awakening because it took the "church" out of the way and gave us a direct voice to God.
In my opinion the "great awakenings" served as the awakening to religion and those who new how to work it, to gain money and build names and buildings for themselves; they may have made God more aware to the people, but they did it through fear and not love (tho it may have been disguised as love.) Nothing was awakened.

There is a place for these churches. They are like a big, noisy parade that marches by your house, gaining your attention. Or the smaller ones, like a standard, placed in the middle of towns all over america, reminding us there is a God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
If they can no longer feed you, then move on. But, they fed you for a long time, by your own account.
Now I drive by huge mosques in sleepy little towns and think, Where am I?
And what are they feeding to my neighbors?
" But, they fed you for a long time, by your own account." Yes you are correct and I got fat with bad food and
1Sa 4:18 And it comes to pass, at his mentioning the ark of Elohim, that he falls from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dies, for the man [is] old and heavy, and he has judged Israel forty years.
So within all that time listening to the hum of empty words, by my own account, and I got fat and sick. My opinion concerning the "awakenings," is that yes God was made known but the value of that knowledge was empty, much like it is today with Mr. Beck and his great awakenings. Beck is awakening the people to a renewing of God in their life, which is good, but has no idea and passes on no knowledge of why God IS. Dont get me wrong if you are a Beck follower, I like and listen to Beck.
good posts!
Loved that scripture,Micah. An ass had to be redeemed or it's neck broken...and the Lord rode into Jerusalem on a colt of an ass.....yes, the Lord has
need of 'asses' too! a beast of burden.......

Micah, would you please explain what you mean about the second coming? Do you believe Jesus will return at a future time, or do you think he won't return in the future? If Jesus did come in the future wouldn't that be a second coming? Curious as to how you see this?

Here is where Bro. Eby and others are truly in revelation knowledge....He came, He comes, and He will come. Men of religion seem to hold this "second coming" as a carrot, a tool to keep the edge of apprehension(Fearful or joyful expectation or anticipation) He came a first time, and a second time, and third time....HE COMES! Coming= G3952 "parousia" a being near;
coming, presence.
Heb 13:5 Without covetousness the behaviour, being content with the things present, for He hath said, `No, I will not leave, no, nor forsake thee,'
If Jesus did come in the future wouldn't that be a second coming? I hope what the Lord has given me in the way I wrote is an answer to a second coming.
Curious as to how you see this? I give all credit for this understanding to the Lord, who for me, used the writings of Bro. Eby who enlighten me.
Rev 1:8 I am the Alpha and the Omega,is saying the Lord God, Who is and Who was and Who is coming, the Almighty."

So you dont know what Cardindal means right? I quote, " The only thing that's waking up is HIM.." so I ask, JUST when was HIM asleep? That is my question, the daystar(who by the way several on this forum contend this is "lucifer,) is this the day star of which you speak? So I will continue to ask, " JUST when was HIM asleep? "
Adam is a type of the one to come which is why he is called the daystar. Lucifer is Adam, not some fallen angel, not satan (although the jury is out as to whether satan is our carnal mind) in my understanding.
sleep is likened to death. So waking up is the resurrection of Christ in you and me. Thus the daystar arising in our heart.

I do see and somewhat understand that adam, maybe the daystar. Lucifer is adam, I can reasonably see that as well,
there are no fallen angels in the Bible that I can find.
The adversary/satan is not the carnal mind.
Sleep is lilkened to death, yes that I to see and reason that to be a truth; and waking up is very much a type of resurrection, yes the Christ in me/you rising.
The daystar is rising in our heart, I do understand that, but none of this is an answer to the statement,
"The only thing that's waking up is HIM.."
In my opinion, I have not found one place in the Bible that "HIM" has or went to sleep so as to be wakened. That I believe is what I questioned.

How about when He was asleep in the boat.
He was killed, or put to sleep on the cross. And then he arose/ woke up. Now He arises/wakes up in us.
I'm sorry but, in my opinion this question I in my reference has lost its compass. Should you have the thought that JESUS "the man" was asleep is the same as God( the "HIM") of which I was asking about, was truly and actually "asleep," as far as not being aware of the goings on of the kosmos, then I must stop thinking; as well His death on the cross, that He was disabled Him from knowing what is/was going on then again I must cease.
I feel that Cardinal must have meant when she said, "The only thing that's waking up is HIM.." was that WE are awakening to HIM. For me(my opinion) to even consider that "HIM(God/Jesus) can sleep as we understand sleep as repose or death is beyond my reasoning. :HeartThrob:
Reason this:
3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
--Rom 6

...we have been planted together in the likeness of his death...
plmted together"
G4854
σύμφυτος
sumphutos
soom'-foo-tos
From G4862 and a derivative of G5453; grown along with (connate), that is, (figuratively) closely united to: - planted together.
From the combination of two greek words, sun=companionship and phuo=germinate or grow [as a seed]
..we shall be also of [his] resurrection.
Are we not born dead? He is asleep in us until the voice calls into the darkness and it is no longer I that lives but Christ in me. The daystar is the first star seen when morning is dawning. At the end of John christ appears to the disciples while theyre fishing as the morning is dawning.
Romans 6 is saying
we are baptized into the death of Christ TOGETHER WITH HIM
and thus we shall be raised TOGETHER WITH HIM into the newness of life.
This is a new man being described here--
8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Okay, you win. Then what about this with all this dying going on? Joh 11:26 and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die--to the age;
8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him
--Rom 6
Being dead in your sins and being baptized into Christ's death together with him seem to be two different things.
if we are buried with him, planted together [with him] in the likeness of his death, we shall be also [raised togehter with him in the likeness of his] resurrection.
At this point, death has no more dominion over us, we live [together with him]and shall never die.
We have crossed over [together with Christ] from death to life.
because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death Rom 8:2

Now if you read all the posts prior to this how would you understand the "HIM?" I, I guess, ignorantly thought it pertained to HIM- God, I would never have thought that the capital letters of HIM was pertaining to anyone else but God. So from all the post from that point on there was this small, stupid, and ignorant assumption by me, at least that is my opinion. :sigh:
God uses a farming metaphor to describe it. The 'HIM' is a seed. A seed comes from a plant. The seed is produced as the plant dies. The seed is planted and creates a new plant--just like the old plant that died.
We are told that this is a mystery that has been hidden from ages and generations--Christ in you, the hope of glory.
That seed--Christ-- is there, waiting for the right conditions to germinate.
Wherefore we are planted together with him into his death--not our death, his death--and raised by the same power that raised him from the dead, together with him into the newness of life.
It is to this seed that the promise is made.
The seed is the word of God.
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. [1Pet1:23]

My thought/guess so :2c:
Believers are said to be "in Christ".
That means the believers are always in the same situation as Jesus is. On the cross. In the grave. On the right hand of God. And.... waking up.
Slighly related: A pastor once said to me "If God looks at you He doesn't see you but Jesus."
To avoid misunderstanding he was
not meaning that all Christians are (called) Jesus.
Time for some sleep :grave:
Hell the great awakenings were about the waking up to the populace who they spoke to let yo know that Hell is alive an well. And by God you had better wake up to that fact or you are surely going to Hell! Wake the Hell up you are gonna fry for one hell of a long time. Copuntry music, which I love made a lot of money with all that going to hell stuff. Religion with out the truth is no awakening at all, on any level. Spewing lies to scare the hell our of people to get saved and come to God is a disgusting thing, with the end of your life is going to hell and roast and burn wiothout relief. Does any one think that is true?
Well according to the records many poor souls fell into the loop.
Yeh, I know that God allowed it for His reasonings and the time, but aint it time now to unveil the lies they spoke that drove some to suicide for fear they would end up in a place where their suffering for their sins would never die? Or killed their babies for fear they would die before they were baptized?
Should the lie be revealed that there was no "Great Awakening," but a pull for money and the control of the masses? There was nothing "awakening" about any of the the 3 great awakinings, and now we have a radio person speaking about a 4th great awakening. Should we be afraid of such things? I must wonder. :dontknow:
