Hi there all,
Great topic!

WillieH, how can you or I know what God is called!
God doesn't have a name to speak of.  Allah is the muslims' way of addressing God and Yhwh is the Hebrews' way!  That is the limitation of language.
But how could a human with his limited understanding know what God is, never mind what He is called!
There isn't a monoply on God!

All I changed was the subject line to draw Willie's attention to it.

With this subsequent edit, all I changed was the subject line since this subject's been answered and closed.

Hi Nancy,

Allah is actually an ancient pagan moon god that was worshipped in the middle east in previous millenia.  Some scholars believe that it's the pagan system that Abram was deeply involved with prior to YHVH calling him according to His grace.  Allah really is a demon.  One of the "gods" that David said in one of the Psalms that he'll never ever allow that name to come out of his mouth 'cause to the ancients the utterance of a deity's name was the same as invoking it.  Some scholars have wondered about connections between Allah and the Greek "Aries," god of war.

Nancy

Hi ya,

I don't know the origins of Allah as a moon god but i'm sure that many muslims don't know about this moon god thing either, just as many christians don't realise that Jesus will drag ALL men to Himself.  They turn Jesus into a mean savior when they should know better. If you believe Allah is the name of God, does it matter?  Many christians say they know Jesus but do they really? The point i was making is that no-one can truly say 'God is like this or called that, etc'!

Hi Nancy,

I'm sure that many of the Muslim clergy are aware of it.  Perhaps all of them.  They do have the half moon cresent as their symbol.  I've never read a defense of it, but I'm sure among other things that they might say about it is that as they reject Isaac as being Abraham's firstborn in the eyes of God, I'm sure they'd consider YHVH to be a part of the deception that took Abraham away from considering Ishmael as his firstborn.  Or they'd more likely say that as the Jews and Christians have perverted the Bible to the Isaac & Israel deception, they've also changed the name of God to suit them.

Though some of it's a bit obscured by some of the English translations, the Bible's pretty plain about the Names of God honored by God, and His firm stand against paganism unless you've rejected the Bible as not being the Word of Christ.  In which case, you've either rejected the claims of Christ in favor of a Unitarian everything and everyone claiming godhood probably is God by multiple names, ( :icon_jokercolor: in which case BOW :icon_jokercolor:) or you've refashioned Christ in your own image to suit you.  The book of Isaiah, among other books written by the prophets thoroughly rejects anyone else's claim to being God and emphatically clarifies that God doesn't veil Himself under a plethora of names for other cultures.  People either know Him or they don't.  It's not a rose by any other name that'll do for Him.

The Lord will be terrifying to them, for He will starve all the gods of the earth; and all the coastlands of the nations will bow down to Him, everyone from His own place. Zephaniah 2:11

The God of the Bible, presented to us in Jesus Christ, is violently opposed to being called by any other name.  He will not allow the confusion that would result.  People honestly either know Him, or they don't know Him YET.

Allah is used for God in Arabic translations of the Bible.

But, as for Nancy's statement, "...that no-one can truly say 'God is like this or called that, etc'!" I would respond with certainty that I can speak with authority concerning what God is like and what He can be called because I know Him.  I see Him.  He speaks with me.  I feel Him.  As good as it is, better than me in fact, the Bible isn't quite to what I'm referring.  "That...which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life...declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ." (1 John 1:1,3)

I'll have to study Arabic a little further 'cause I was under the impression it would have been translated a different way.  I'm pretty sure there's an Arabic translation of the Bible at the downtown library close to where I live.  I'll have to look into that, or if like in other cases we're talking about newer translations verses older translations, "edited for today's reader" issues, etc.

Most of the time, though, when people try to say that the God of Islam is the exact same as the God of the Judeo-Christian experience, their assumption isn't over a translational issue, but as though the Koran had essentially the same message though with culturally different details, which every scholar that I know emphatically rejects vehemently.

YES... It DOES matter... JESUS CHRIST means "YHVH saves"... and in calling upon the NAME of JESUS CHRIST are we SAVED...  :dontknow:

So YES Nancy... names DO matter... especially in reference to GOD...

If I call you MABEL or EDNA instead of NANCY, does it matter to you?  If someone calls JESUS CHRIST, "peter pan", does it matter to you  Nancy?  :dunno:

I don't see this as "your point" at all!  "Your point" is that, it doesn't "matter" what we use as GOD's Name...

Think about it Nancy... according to you, we are free to call Him ZEUS or NEPTUNE, or BRITNEY SPEARS... and it "doesn't matter"...

Nancy... all we can go by is the notation given to us which we BELIEVE to be in GOD's Word.

IN that notation, the letters YHVH were given to the HEBREW nation by INSPIRATION of GOD...

That inspiration noted His "name" to be YHVH...

You are welcome to call Him what you will... as far as I am concerned... I shall call Him what the WORD of GOD calls Him, that being YHVH...

have a nice day!  :bgdance:

I have to agree with WillieH on this one, that the book of Acts says that there's a Name by which we're saved.  The Name stands for the Person, and every other name has fallen short.  Philippians 2 says that at the Name of Jesus every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of YHVH the Father.

This could get us into a Jesus vs. Yeshua argument, and we're not going to go there, trust me.  'Cause I'm sure all of our first names, if they still existed 2000 years ago, are quite different than anything we'd recognize and many of us probably couldn't have even pronounced our own names if we had the 2000 year ago version of our names, if they existed in some form back then in some culture.

It does matter what the Name is, unless you've rejected the Bible.  There are translational and textual authority issues over other brief passages, but none of them involve the Name, or any of the passages where God's emphatically saying throughout the prophets that yes, He is going to make an issue about what He's called -- just the same as anyone else would be.

The only way for confusion on this matter is if you're leaning towards deism and don't believe in a God Who has Personally revealed Himself.  I'm not calling you a deist.  I'm saying that that's the alternative, other than Unitarianism which says that any Name for deity goes; just whatever ya wanna call Him.

Still, there's something to be said for a woman that would be so modest that she'd defend the right to call her God the Name of a god that if he were god, then he'd bury her in 50 to 75 pounds of thick, warm cloth in a 130 degree summer desert. :mshock:

Nancy,
I understand what you're saying sis...

hmmm, i would have to say the spirit with which one addresses god is going to be more important than HOW one addresses God

i consider being a christian universalist a privelege, not a requirement - i feel, enlightened - but that doesnt mean that God doesnt respond to people of other cultures because of how they were brought up

in the book of Acts Peter was commanded not to call 'unclean that which I have purified' - he took that as a specific reference to non-isrealites - if we extrapolate from that statement, add in the fact that Jesus didnt command anyone to have undying total faith in him, i think that says alot about the nature and acceptance of God

Actually, Jesus did say that no one comes to the Father but through Himself, Jesus the Son.  Jesus said that all judgment was committed to Him by the Father, and that those who didn't have the Son didn't have the Father either.  To maintain good faith with what Gary Amirault, the site owner is wanting of us at this discussion board, I'm locking this thread and considering the matter closed now that there's been a good representation of those maintaining faith in the Word and of those who don't yet see the importance for taking the New Testament at face value, or who simply haven't read it all yet.

For more information on why certain topics are being discouraged or brought to a rapid conclusion after a representative statement on both sides of the issue has been allowed without allowing a food fight to break out by leaving it unmonitored, I'd again refer people to this thread http://www.tentmaker.org/forum/index.php?topic=2732.0
