Title: Giants or men?
Post by: DeeDee on November 21, 2008, 01:08:48 PM
Hi all. I want to discuss David and Goliath. Was Goliath a real giant? Did giants walk the earth those years, or did scripture mean something else when it spoke of giants? Older bible manuscripts differ in the height of Goliath. Was he only about six foot or was he taller?

Blessings
Dee

A.
Present day modern man which averages about 6-feet tall + or - several inches or more.

B.
15-foot human skeleton found in southeast Turkey in late 1950's in the Euphrates valley during road construction.  Many tombs containing giants were uncovered here. This pertains to the picture of the giant human femur and myself above.

C.
Maximinus Thrax Ceaser of Rome 235-238 A.D.  This was an 8' 6" skeleton.

D.  Goliath was about 9 feet + or - a few inches.  I Samuel 17:4 late 11th century.

E. King Og spoken of in Deuteronomy 3:11 whose iron bedstead was approximately 14-feet by 6-feet wide. King Og was at least 12-feet tall, yet some claim up to 18.

F. A 19'6" human skeleton found in 1577 A.D. under an overturned oak tree in the Canton of Lucerne.

G. 23-foot tall skeleton found in 1456 A.D. beside a river in Valence, France.

H. A 25' 6 " skeleton found in 1613 A.D. near the castle of Chaumont in France. This was claimed to be a nearly complete find.

I. Almost beyond comprehension or believability was the find of the two separate 36-foot human remains uncovered by Carthaginians somewhere between 200-600 B.C.

Come now Molly love, where would the fun in that be ?  :laughing7:

WhiteWings: I found some of the stuff online that you mentioned. Really very interesting. Lots of hoax stuff 2 (as with everything else in this world). I see that even today's life you get people over 8 foot tall. They estimate Goliath to have been about 9 foot 9 inches. So that would mean that when the bible spoke of giants it literally meant giants. Thanks.

The fact that his size is mentioned means giants where rare

DD,

If you take the Bible as a lead the giants are at least double the size of modern humans.
That kinda big too.

Taffy should know more about this. In a Welsh coppermine 2500 64-pound sledgehammers have been found.

You know since I started this thread I have been thinking alot about giants. It's amazing how accurate the bible really is. Lots of people tend to say that writings in the bible seem more fairytale then true. The fact that giants did walk the earth proves how wrong these people are. Just because our brains are too small to understand some things we automatically dub them as being fiction or not true or not possible. We are dealing with the Big Boss here people, and He has shown time and time again that with Him ALL things are possible.

The historical events presented in the Bible are all correct.
Many things have been found to back up Biblical kings and events.
There are still Biblical claims that haven't be resolved and that's enough for the sceptics to claim the Bible is wrong because there is no proof yet that proves the fact.
The proof always goes into one direction. It's the Bible that has to be proved.
They prefer an hardly readble broken clay tablet over clearly readle text.
When are claims are verified the Bible will get upgraded from fairy tail book to history book...

Yes and I do believe that all in the bible will be verified, then you will see how fast some people change their minds about being Christian.

I once read a theory that Goliath was probably an individual who suffered from a form of gigantism.  Sometimes a tumor in the brain produces excess growth hormones and people could get extremely tall.  Modern-day treatments have pretty much put a stop to this phenomena.

Don't forget  the Jolly green giant!

Joking aside don't we refer to giants today
in corporate terms such as the oil giants, wall street as the financial giants, and also individuals with great wealth, reputation and power as a giant? Or sometimes those around the world in high places of religious or political power as Giaints?

Have even heard the Roman Catholic Pope refered to as a powerful religious giant of the world.

Think about it, old men of re-known, of great reputation and position of great authority or power in some area of life that we might read about in history are often viewed or refered to as the giants of their day.

Peace,

I can agree with that.
But I think it's also about size.
Perhaps some of the sizes in the link I posted are a hoax but if you hold teh Bible as truth you can't deny Goliath and King Og are 'gigantic' in size.
