Explaination of the Christain fish

In the very early days of the faith, it was quite dangerous for a person to announce that they are Christians to just anyone. When a man would meet another one in the road, he would draw a half arc in the dust with the end of his walking staff. If the other man was also a Christian, he would know what that meant and draw the other arc, making the shape of a fish. This way they would know they were in friendly company. So, it was kind of like a secret handshake.
