Title: Does God hate divorce? Is re-marriage adultery?
Post by: firstborn888 on November 17, 2007, 07:36:02 AM
Here are some articles I came across while helping my daughter cope with her divorce.

Does God Hate Divorce?

Of course, marriages are intended to be lifelong. But even God has been through a divorce. That's right, check it out in Jeremiah 3:8 "Lo I had put her out and given her a certificate of divorce"...He is speaking of Israel.

The widely used verse in Malachi, where God seems to state that He "hates divorce", is mistranslated. What God hates is literally "the putting out" of a woman.

Putting out is altogether different than divorce in Jewish culture. A man would permanently kick his wife out, denying her the Jewish divorce certificate. This woman would still be legally married, but with no home. Her dowry and children would be retained by the husband. She would have already surrendered her virginity to him. She would be ineligible to remarry, since technically, she was still legally bound to her husband. Further, her culture would label her as an adulteress since she did not have a valid divorce certificate. And this lady couldn't just rent an apartment and get a job teaching kindergarten - there was no place for a put out woman in Jewish culture of that day except prostitution. Since the marriages were most often arranged, this whole horrible chain of events would have been completely out of her control.
The husband, however, was free to marry again and to do this as much as he liked. That is why Moses required a divorce certificate to be given... so that the marriage was legally, fairly, and religiously terminated and the woman would be free to remarry and go on with life.

For more info about this topic, do a search on the word "agunah". That means "chained women". The act of putting a woman out is still happening and today there are 1000s of "chained women" in Israel! A Jewish divorce certificate is so valuable that often after a man puts out a woman, he will legally obtain the certificate and then sell it to the highest bidder. "Agunah" is one of the greatest problems faced by orthodox Judaism today.

All over the Bible we have ignorantly and clumsily translated "put out" as "divorce". This has caused many errant doctrines to be formed and made a terrible mess out of millions of people's lives. The toll in human suffering because of our ignorance is overwhelming. The Bible simply does not say that God hates divorce. It says that God hates the putting away.

In the New Testament, Jesus continues to address this cruel breach of human rights. Nearly all of the verses translated "divorce" in the Gospels actually say "put away". It is a completely different situation which we have no equivalent for. Knowing this makes a world of difference. For instance, many believe that Christian remarriage is adultery. But Jesus did not say that if a man marries a divorced woman, he would be committing adultery. He said that if a man married a "put out" woman, he would be committing adultery. This is because she was technically still married! In Israel, putting a woman out is a devastating, intentional ruination of a woman's life. God still hates it.

We have mangled the meaning of what is going on here and used it to place people under a different type of legalism. The worst result of this mistake is that when a marriage does break down, people will often believe that God rejects them, and they will lose their faith just when they need it the most.

There are myriads of reasons why marriage relationships break down. God hates it when a heavy, inflexible grid of legalism is imposed on people and they are broken and turn away from Him as a result. It is obvious that marriages are intended to be lifelong and that every attempt should be made to reconcile and to recapture the first love that founded the relationship. But in this imperfect world, God's provision of divorce is sometimes vital, and can be lifesaving.

Is Remarriage Adultery?

In Jewish culture, remarriage was not considered adultery for a man, in fact many men had multiple wives. Remarriage was not considered adultery for a woman unless she did not have a valid divorce certificate. Jesus said that if a man "put out" a woman, i.e. without a divorce certificate, he would be forcing her into adultery since few people could endure lifelong forced singlehood. Also, there were really no cultural options for a "put out" woman except prostitution. If another man married such a woman then he would be considered adulterous since she was still technically married to her first husband. Jesus was exposing the cruelty of the misuse of their system. (Please read the article, "Does God Really Hate Divorce" for a more complete explanation of "putting away" in Jewish culture.

Jesus was also implying that if a country enacts a law, that law may or may not be in agreement with God. Just because someone followed a written law did not absolve them from sin in God's eyes if the law was unethical or was used in an unethical manner.

We believe that the answer to the question, "is remarriage adultery?" is a heart question. In some cases we believe that marriage itself can be adultery. If someone woos another person into a corrupt and captive version of marriage for any reason other than true love and the calling of God, then we believe that this would be viewed as adultery by God. This may seem like a strong statement, but there are many people the world over who do this! Many use the marriages laws of their countries or corrupted Biblical principles to capture and own another person for the purpose of security, sex, money, slavery, and many other godless reasons.

The reasons for marriage and remarriage are many. If a person misuses American marriage laws, they can marry, use, and divorce one person after another for shallow reasons and be perfectly legal. But God would just see this as a string of adulterous relationships.

On the other hand, a person may have a marriage end for legitimate reasons. God can lead a person to a new partner and bless a second marriage and the love, life, and ministry that flows from it.

God sees the heart. He knows when people are using each other and He knows when there is the capacity and desire for real love expressed in a lifelong relationship.

Same here. I know it was 20 years ago because I remember when my daughter was 3 (she's 23 now) I would put her to bed listening to Don Fransico (on headphones) so we people in the next room could sleep. That proved to be a mistake because 30 minutes or so later we were all woken up by this shrieking voice singing "He's Alive! He's Alive! He's Alive and I'm forgiven!" at the top of her little lungs :mshock:

There is such an anointing on those songs. I actually went to Don's site being hopeful of finding some UR there because of his obvious closeness to the Lord. Did not find UR, but did find a good dose of 'myth-busting'.

I knew there was more to what Jesus said about divorce than what was said in the scriptures....otherwise it looks like divorce is one of those unforgivable sins. If you remarry after a wrong divorce, you would be considered a sinner for the rest of your life. THis article clears all that up. Thanks for posting it, Byron

I wore out my Don Fransisco tape many years ago. I really liked his music though. Glad to see he's still around.

Ha- ha!  we did the same thing- checking out his web site!    my husband says that if there's such a thing as the gift of being a lyricist, than he's the most gifted!  To write those long Bible story songs that all rhyme!  It's amazing!

I read something similar to this - nice to know remarriage is an option for those divorced :Sparkletooth:

Here's a link. I would quote the important part of it but I don't have time...

The rest of this man's site is VERY legalistic (no TV, no banking, women can't talk in church, etc...), but this page seems to be correct as far as I know.

Hello All,

Been very long since I posted. I just popped in to see what topics were on and this really caught my attention. I truly agree that this issue is a heart issue. God has had me on an amazing journey (that is not quite finished...) in my own life with my own divorce. I still don't know the outcome. However, before my ex and I separated and divorced God promised me He was going to restore us. I could truly write a book with all that has transpired over the past decade concerning this. I can only say that thus far God has truly had me through refining fires concerning this, I can relate to Joseph...when the promises of God did not line up with what he faced to get there. The major work was the heart changes that God did in all involved. I stand in awe of what God has done thus far ...literally has accomplished the impossible and has moved mountains. God truly has given me the heart of Hosea for my ex-husband. And for a while as I sifted through much I got so caught up in all of the different doctrinal viewpoints (God also used all of this to point me to UR), it was at times very emotional. God eventually got my attention very clearly and showed me I am to seek Him and Him alone for my family. All I can say is that amazing things have been happening among all involved in my situation...and it truly looks as though God is fulfilling His promises to me and my family. However, the biggest lesson I am learning is to stay focused on Him. He reveals His will step by step. I am open to whatever the outcome. I have often told the Lord that I am well aware that I could be hearing Him incorrectly, LOL! He may be laughing as each time He seems to answer that by confirming over, and over, and over, and over, that this is indeed the path He has paved out for me! So funny that these human emotions cause us what they do...one day full of faith, then next day questioning. But, for me He has confirmed this path through His word, prophetic words over the years, people I've met, situations, circumstances, moving in the hearts of all involved, working supernaturally in the natural!
I will tell you His will is not always easy...at times gut wrenchingly crushing! But you just know that you know when it is Him. He knows just how to guide us. I cannot tell you how many times He has led me as a gentle sheperd through this true battle for hearts. I have had such an amazing intimacy with Him over the years through this! So, I say never put Him in a box and trust that if He calls you to something that others say that's crazy, impossible (I even said it...many times!!)...He will do the impossible and convince you as much as you need that convincing to know that He can do it!!!!

It's sort of sad that people can't understand the difference between being "divorced" and being "put away".

I've had this discussion many times with people and even when you point out the difference (and the error in translation) they simply say "it doesn't matter" because they are the "same" things as "God does not recognize divorce".  :sigh:

:cloud9: Hello Stardust......I hear your heart in this. He has taken me thru much along these lines. Emotions and desires are where the enemy of our souls seems to have the strongest foothold, especially in women. The fire of the Lord has to come to cleanse the emotions, and desires, so that they cannot be moved by anything but His Spirit and faith in His Spirit. As long as they are in authority, they toss us to and fro, in the fire (inner court/Spirit walk) and then in the water (outer court/flesh walk). It's like as long as there's one thread of us caring which way it goes, He will continue it, like wrestling with the angel all night. I found that when it no longer mattered, I didn't want what I thought I wanted, at all. Somehow in the process of wrestling, there had been a nature change, and I was unaware of it until it was there. So hard to put all His dealings into words. Hope this made sense to you. Blessings to you in your walk thru this...... :HeartThrob:

Cardinal,

thank you for your words...honestly I need it...for I feel I may have stumbled in this process even since I posted last night. I am really not sure what to do and I have decided I need to take a step back and seek Him. I am really in a tough place right now. It is very hard to put His dealings into words...I so agree. Honestly, right now I am literally exhausted...partly, because I started working nights this summer and my sleep pattern is off. But, also I am just weary of this trial and just want things to be clear and as they should be. At the same time, there is just such an intense ache inside of me right now. Again, thank you for sharing...

Great explanation.  I just had to email this to a good friend, who, because of events, is seeking a divorce.  His spouse, having found a very fundamentalist church, refuses to cooperate.  Hopefully, this may give him some needed assistance.  I myself think marriages should last forever, but that is "should", not "must".  We humans are fallible in many ways, why should our choices in love be any different. And people do change, my own life has seen so many changes in the last couple years, through recovery.

2 things stand out to me from that article that I believe to be questionable. He stated that there are no verses in the bible that state that marriage is a covenant and also that marriage to a divorced person is not adultery. My intent is not to start a debate on translations. This really is a matter of the heart and an understanding of what God says marriage is.
Marriage is what God says it is and our sinful actions or ignorance do not change that. This may be a hard word and taken the wrong way by some, but I have had to walk this path myself and the realization of this truth. At the same time, I cannot judge another's decision. We all must walk out the path the Lord has set for us individually. It takes time to understand the Father's heart on this issue and not all can accept the path He may call you to. Jesus states in the passage I quote below that not all can accept this saying. The truth is that divorce and remarriage is adultery, because God created marriage to be permanent union. However, not all marry in obedience to God...and not all divorce in obedience to God. Nonetheless, it does not change what God says about marriage. So, the heart of the matter is to seek the Lord for your own situation and know that God is merciful. Be honest with God first, honest with yourself, and honest with your spouse.
I know MANY would have various thoughts and opinions on my own situation....and many would have different counsel. But, in the end it is I who have to stand before God with my situation. I know I have made mistakes along the way and have had to sift through much confusion, but I am amazed at what God has done and is doing in my family. The important thing is to obey and trust God for your situation and know that all things are possible with God. While we want to love and comfort and bring hope to our brothers and sisters who have gone through this, we also don't want to kill hope. God's time table is not our own. Often we want to relieve the pain that divorce brings and encourage someone to move on with someone new. We know the pain of the lonliness. However, God may have a different plan. God may give a spouse an incredibly deep love for a wayward spouse. He did for Hosea with Gomer. Even if a spouse remarries we must understand that that remarriage may not be God's will, and it may be adulterous in God's eyes. We have to see with spiritual eyes and encourage others facing this to seek the Lord.
If we are quick to reason that there is not a specific scripture that says such unions must not be broken, does not necessarily mean that it is not God's will that it is to remain. Again, this is a heart issue. You cannot even use Deut 24:1-4 as a sure argument, because there are many things in the law we all know very well we would not practice. You must read the bible as a whole. In Jeremiah 3 God says even though they say in the law that if you go and become another man's would not the land become greatly defiled? Yet return to me says the Lord:

Jeremiah 3
Israel Is Shameless
1 "They say, 'If a man divorces his wife,
      And she goes from him
      And becomes another man's,
May he return to her again?'
Would not that land be greatly polluted?
      But you have played the harlot with many lovers;
Yet return to Me," says the LORD.
2 " Lift up your eyes to the desolate heights and see:
Where have you not lain with men?
By the road you have sat for them
      Like an Arabian in the wilderness;
And you have polluted the land
With your harlotries and your wickedness.
3 Therefore the showers have been withheld,
And there has been no latter rain.
      You have had a harlot's forehead;
      You refuse to be ashamed.
4 Will you not from this time cry to Me,
' My Father, You are the guide of my youth?
5 Will He remain angry forever?
Will He keep it to the end?'
Behold, you have spoken and done evil things,
      As you were able."
A Call to Repentance

6 The LORD said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: "Have you seen what backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there played the harlot. 7 And I said, after she had done all these things, 'Return to Me.' But she did not return. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. 8 Then I saw that for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also. 9 So it came to pass, through her casual harlotry, that she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees. 10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not turned to Me with her whole heart, but in pretense," says the LORD.
11 Then the LORD said to me, "Backsliding Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say:

      ' Return, backsliding Israel,' says the LORD;

' I will not cause My anger to fall on you.
      For I am merciful,' says the LORD;

' I will not remain angry forever.
That you have transgressed against the LORD your God,
      And have scattered your charms
To alien deities under every green tree,
And you have not obeyed My voice,' says the LORD.

14 "Return, O backsliding children," says the LORD; "for I am married to you. I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion. 15 And I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.
16 "Then it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied and increased in the land in those days," says the LORD, "that they will say no more, 'The ark of the covenant of the LORD.' It shall not come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it, nor shall it be made anymore.
17 "At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the LORD, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem. No more shall they follow the dictates of their evil hearts.
18 "In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given as an inheritance to your fathers.
19 "But I said:

' How can I put you among the children
And give you a pleasant land,
A beautiful heritage of the hosts of nations?'

"And I said:

' You shall call Me, "My Father,"
And not turn away from Me.'
20 Surely, as a wife treacherously departs from her husband,
So have you dealt treacherously with Me,
O house of Israel," says the LORD.
21 A voice was heard on the desolate heights,
Weeping and supplications of the children of Israel.
      For they have perverted their way;
They have forgotten the LORD their God.
22 " Return, you backsliding children,
And I will heal your backslidings."

" Indeed we do come to You,
For You are the LORD our God.
23 Truly, in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills,
      And from the multitude of mountains;
Truly, in the LORD our God
      Is the salvation of Israel.
       24 For shame has devoured
The labor of our fathers from our youth—
      Their flocks and their herds,
      Their sons and their daughters.
25 We lie down in our shame,
      And our reproach covers us.
For we have sinned against the LORD our God,
      We and our fathers,
From our youth even to this day,
And have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God."

Now, of course at the same time, this does not mean that God would require this of someone in a situation with an adulterous spouse. The most important message here is no matter how much we prostitute ourselves, God beckons us back to Him...and He will heal us. At the same time, God may call someone to love a wayward spouse in that way. I believe that if God does indeed do that the anointing will be there. I believe that God will confirm that to that person through His word and through circumstances in that person's life. We cannot deny that biblically, because that message is also in the bible...just as others may see differently. God may have different leadings in different situations. We also need to exercise wisdom. We need to be protected from abuse and diseases. Again, this must be a Spirit led path.

Marriage is a covenant:
Malachi 2:

10 Have we not all one Father ? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our fathers by breaking faith with one another?
11 Judah has broken faith. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the LORD loves, by marrying the daughter of a foreign god. 12 As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the LORD cut him off from the tents of Jacob  —even though he brings offerings to the LORD Almighty.

13 Another thing you do: You flood the LORD's altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer pays attention to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. 14 You ask, "Why?" It is because the LORD is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.

15 Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. [e] So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.

16 "I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himself with violence as well as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty.
So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith.

Matthew 19
Divorce
1When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. 2Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
3Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?"

4"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' 5and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? 6So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

7"Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"

8Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."

10The disciples said to him, "If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry."

11Jesus replied, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. 12For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it."

Of course, God "hates" divorce. Thats one more seperation!

Thats "why" he took pore ole EVE, as "deceived" as He
had allowed her to be, and "washed her with the WORD"
til she was w/o spot or wrinkle and decided to marry her.......
while He had her OUT of Adam He "changed" her very substance
into a NEW Jerusalem, "dressed" her in white linen,
and they got remarried! ha

He must LOVE remarriage! tho!  They say He married the "backslider."
I tell you, that MAN loves "Mercy!"

Took some "palm BRANCHES" and He and her got under a "booth" the last time! ha

I doubt if anybody could locate them!

Nobody knew where Elijah went.........

You'll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush
your teeth with Peposodent!

Oh, Lordy, Miss Clordy! :bgdance: :bgdance: :bgdance:

Byron! My spirit bears testimony to your message. That is exactly how I saw it in Scripture though had not pivot to why. Thanks
