Title: Catholic Purgatory vs Universalist Lake of Fire
Post by: Jason76 on August 25, 2014, 11:13:50 PM
How do we know that the Catholic purgatory doesn't exist, and the universalist view of the "Lake of Fire" is correct?

Well, not every believer in universal salvation has the same view of the Lake of Fire and what it symbolizes. But I don't see the teaching of purgatory in the Bible. Yes, people quote scriptures here and there, but I am talking about a TEACHING, like how Paul spends chapter upon chapter detailing how the Spirit saves man from sin, and yet never mentions an afterlife purgatory.

I personally have no problem with the concept of purgatory in relation to the lake of fire. We are not told the details, so how can I make one assertion or another? Purgatory has been given wide and mythical definitions, so how could I make any assertion about it :o) LOL

I have no problem with discussing such things and concluding,

"Well, I guess we'll see"!

I'm trolling you :)

I had a guy tell me once he wasn't a pre or post-millinialist...but that he was a pan-millinialist...because it'll all pan out in the end.   :prankster:

if I understand catholic purgatory---they teach that if you pay the Priests that they can pray your loved ones out of it

well that's not even close to the truth  lol

However the lake of Fire is--one thing is for sure---those who are in it--shall not come out till the purpose of the Fire is complete in them  :dsunny:

Where in the Bible do you find a teaching on "catholic purgatory" or even such a teaching of a "purgatory?" Listen when you hear a word such as purgatory, rapture, trinity, substitution and you seek it it the Bible, search it in Strong's or Young's and you can't find it, consider it not sound doctrine.  :dsunny: :HeartThrob:

Purgatory will soon join Limbo, in Limbo.

I try not to get to hung up in terminology. Words often mean different things to different people. I try to examine what the concept "in the mind" of the person I am speaking with is, and respond accordingly. In this way I feel like I can avoid letting just anything someone says be a "hot button" for me :o)

Isn't that the entire problem?  "I try not to get to hung up in terminology. Words often mean different things to different people." Seems to me terminology is taught imo.

Not as I see it. The real problem imo is that people get hung up on what words mean to them and before they have a chance to commune and understand they start beating one another over the head and arguing split hairs and jots and tittles.

Terminology IS taught, I agree with that. The only answer for that is fellowship in the Spirit.

1 Cor 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

This thing of combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words is, imo, not as easy or automatic as it could seem to some- because all have been taught, so all have varying perspectives, and few are willing to learn. It only happens in a spirit of fellowship(also rare)- it never happens in a spirit of debate and strivings about words(to quote Paul).
