According to most translations Joseph had 70 sons.
Gen 46:27 (NET.) Counting the two sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt, all the people of the household of Jacob who were in Egypt numbered seventy.
Gen 46:27 (BBE) And the sons of Joseph whom he had in Egypt were two. Seventy persons of the family of Jacob came into Egypt.
Exod 1:5 (NET.) All the people who were directly descended from Jacob numbered seventy. But Joseph was already in Egypt,
Exod 1:5 (BBE) All the offspring of Jacob were seventy persons: and Joseph had come to Egypt before them.
According to several other translations Joseph had 75 sons.
Gen 46:27 (LXXE) And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in the land of Egypt, were nine souls; all the souls of the house of Jacob who came with Joseph into Egypt, were seventy-five souls.
Gen 46:27 (ACV) And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were nine souls. All the souls of the house of Jacob who came into Egypt, were seventy-five.
Exod 1:5 (LXXE) But Joseph was in Egypt. And all the souls born of Jacob were seventy-five.
Exod 1:5 (ACV) And all the souls who came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy-five souls. And Joseph was in Egypt already.
CLV is on the middle ground with both 70 and 75 sons.
Gen 46:27 (CLV) And the sons of Joseph who are born to him in Egypt are two souls. All the souls pertaining to the house of Jacob coming to Egypt are seventy-five.
Exod 1:5 (CLV) All the souls having come forth from the thigh of Jacob had become seventy souls. As for Joseph, he was in Egypt.
Besides the 70 vs 75 there is also a 2 vs contradiction.
Which is right?
All NT translations I checked read 75.
Acts 7:14 (ACV) And Joseph having sent forth, he summoned Jacob his father. And all his kinfolk, in souls, were seventy-five.
The Dead Sea Scrolls brought something new to light. There where 3 different OT version. Two of them where useble/complete. The Babylonian version which most of our OT are translated from (70). And the Egyptian version which among a few other the LXX/Sepergint was translated from (75)
The LXX is an ancient Greek OT translated by Jewish Scribes. From the above it seems Jesus and the 12 used either the LXX or the Egyptian version of the OT.
There are more differences than the things shown above. But that's for another post :winkgrin:
That's very interesting! ..at first glance I would think the 70 and 75 discrepancy would be due to having been taken from men's records of genealogies, etc.. But I'm sensing it goes deeper than that.. It would be interesting of course to know all the differences.. and would be easy to spot if it had become corrupted.. The Spirit and the Word would reveal why the differences..
This reminds me.. I really do need to incorporate daily reading from the prophets in my DAILY readings!! The history I read about once every five years or so.. but would be interesting to know when the two - Babylonian (Persian?) Version we most use and the Egyptian/LXX - split.. and the how and the why of it!

Likely it's because of that. But inspired Scripture doesn't have such flaws. The HS needs no record to remember stuff.

When you do compare the "and ... begat ... at the age of ...." verses in the LXX and other translations. Very often a 100 year discrepancy.
