Jesus never mentioned hell...not once.  Jesus mentioned Gehenna which was a trash dump/cremetory in southern Jerusalem.  His description I believe was a prophecy and warning about impending judgement upon the Jewish nation.  I believe he was speaking about earthly destruction a judgement for lack of belief in him as the Christ.  While it's also possible he was not only speaking about this judgement but future judgement for all mankind...I see no reason to believe that from what is written.  But, if he indeed was he would be referring to eternal destruction rather than eternal torture.  You don't burn something in Gehenna to torture it...you take it there to destroy it.

There are two types of dead people.
Type#1: Physically dead. Those people are in Hell=Hades=Sheol
Type#2: Spiritually dead. Those people still walk on the earth. There are so many it could even be called "Sea of humanity".

Not all of those verses are spoken by Jesus. (the red letter text)
imo it doesn't really matter because it's all HS inspired. So trustworthy

IIRC Jesus spoke about hell/hades/gehenna ~15 times and ~130 times about heaven. Could be a few more of less but it's obivious he spoke 10x more about heaven as hell. Could be 9x or 11 times. But certainly far different from the 2x more about hell claim.
You have a list of verse to back up your claims. If your opponent doesn't agree he/she needs to backup the claim with verses.

Shawn this is what I originally belived and is one reason why I don't believe in an afterlife, because the text says, not only are there people in hell, but also there are people in the sea. Tradditionally there has only been one holding place for the dead and that is in hades the underworld, so the addition of sea here also, to me, meant that, it must be physical. However if I think it through some more there are other possibilities.

Such as, there is not only an underworld but also a place in the sea, for the dead where they exist in spirit, waiting for the resurection.
But that idea doesn't have much scriptural support, for there isn't any mention of a holding place in the sea for the spiritually deceased.


I have some additional thoughts I can't prove with verses (yet). Maybe you can process it in your think tank.

There are two types of dead people.
Type#1: Physically dead. Those people are in Hell=Hades=Sheol
Type#2: Spiritually dead. Those people still walk on the earth. There are so many it could even be called "Sea of humanity".

For us Hades is just a word. But when Jesus spoke those words the mythology of Hades(Greek)/Pluto(=Roman) was very much alive.
So while I fully agree the dead are just very dead in a grave/tomb instead of ET-hell I also think Hades has a deeper meaning.
Otherwise Jesus would have used another word.....

The USA is at war with everyone Afganistan for example. Does that mean 100% of the Amerians is fighting Afgahns?

The Pharisees, as builders, were building a temple of man, destined to have "not one stone left standing on another"(garbage).

The builders of God are seeking a city made "without hands", with "foundations in the heavenly realms".

Others have labored (the prophets and the sages and the pilgrims of old) and "we are entered into" their labors.

Everyman's work will be tested by fire, to see if it is "in the light"- the fruit of aionian zoe- a part of the temple, "whose builder and maker is God".

When we walk in newness of life, the fire does not kindle on us- it just makes us shine as disciples of Jesus. We are pruned(He 12:5). We are not whithered, cut off and burned. We "abide" through fellowship in Him and one another and the blood cleanses us if we continue in honesty and humility(1Jn 1:5-10)- growing & continuing as "partakers of the divine nature"(life of the vine, connected life).

The fire Jesus was speaking of in relation to the Pharisees and Saducees(builders), was the fire of 1 Cor 3:15; This describes the process of the garbage dump of God. It is for dead works, i.e. wood, hay and stubble- as opposed to the works that spring forth as fruit from abiding in Christ. This "Gehenna" was both a real garbage dump outside the walls of Jerusalem, and was/is a type of the discernment of God both in the NOW....TODAY...in the I AM- and for that which is to come when the veil is rolled away"on the day when God judges the secrets of men's hearts through Jesus Christ, their consciences either accusing or excusing them(Ro 2:14-16)." 

Notice, Paul clearly says

"If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire"

Jesus was not threatening the Pharisees with eternal torment. He was speaking to them in parables, because of the hardness of their hearts, about the discernment of God.... "I am He who tries the reigns and the hearts."

Notice it says

"each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work"

The "day" and the "fire" are one because the "Light" has already shone in our hearts, and the "darkness" cannot overcome it.

Jesus said, (Mar 9:49)  "For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt."

The nature of aionian life is that it produces the light, life and love of God in the divine nature- works of life and fruit of the spirit.

The nature of aonian fire is that it "consumes the adversaries" until "every knee bows and every tongue confesses" Jesus' Lordship and God's glory.

You cannot put it out (unquenchable fire).

You cannot twist and turn away from it(the worm dies not).

Eventually it will shine through every veil and hidden place "bringing all to light".

Eventually ALL will yield to it for "Our God is a consuming fire". He will be "ALL IN ALL", for, "FROM HIM AND THROUGH HIM AND TO HIM ARE ALL THINGS."

Some will allow the fire to consume the adversaries while in the body.... these are the overcomers, they keep coming to the light.. they abide in the vine.

Some will not, and they are the ones spoken of in 1 Cor 3 and John 15.

Others may experience a further "consuming" due to the hardness of their hearts or the wickedness of their works- such as the devil and his angels being tormented in the presence of God and His holy angels (we see through a glass darkly). There is great reward in receiving Christ in this life.

Regardless of the details- "All that is brought to the light becomes light". Eventually the entire creation will have been "gathered into one one in Christ" so that God will be all in all. Rejoicing in the fire/light/love/life that HE IS. :bgdance:

P.S. In Mark 9 the references show an either/or relationship to "pruning" (cut off that which offends) or having it removed in Gehenna. Black three piece suits are worn by governors and senators, lawyers and representatives, presidents and judges, as well as the many in high finance.  Black is the color for those in charge of capitolism.  Rather than ruled by kings, they follow the black ink of their laws.  Lex Rex.  "...and he who is sitting on it has a pair of balances in his hand." (v.5)  To be fair, to treat men as equals before the law, is the halllmark of capitolism.

"And I perceived, and lo! a greenish horse, and the name of him who is sitting upon it is Death, and the Unseen followed him. And jurisdiction was given them over the fourth of the earth, to kill with the blade and with famine and with death and by the wild beasts of the earth." (v.8)  Who uses green as the emblem of their religion?  Does death ride into the land upon the spirits of men in this system of belief?  They do even now have "jurisdiction...over the fourth of the earth."

As shown above Jesus wasn't buried in Hades. Another word was used for his grave.
Jesus spoke about Hades. That's simple to understood. But what was His view on Hades?

A more correct translation would be "Lake of the fire.
Sodom and it for sister cities were on the shore of the Dead Sea. They likely/possibly got destroyed by volcanic activity. During the time of Jesus the volcano in the sea was still active. Even centuries afterward travelers report sulpherous fumes/mist over the Dead sea.
It also seems that the people had a habit of casting junk into that sea.

So what if Jesus just mocked their Hades concept and suggested to dump that concept into the sea because it was no longer of any use?

In Job 28:22, it is linked with death and personified in the same way as death in Dan 4:23; Rev 6:8, where death and Hades are companions.

A grave is destruction of the flesh. Wide is the road that leads to destruction.

Is Apollyon the god of the underworld  :mshock: the angel that gets cast into the lake of fire, bringing an end to death for the devil has power of death, devil leader of Apollyon?

The Greeks and Romans had many gods. For them it certainly was a god of the underworld. Did Jesus agree with parts of pagan teachings of did he mock the concepts of used the concepts to explain things? Just like He used sheep, coins, wheat, tar, etc to explain things. So parable style of explaining things.
If everybody is resurrected  there are no dead. The kingdom of Hades, Abaddon, Apollo, etc is complely empty so it's useless.

I think it's important to remember that Jesus said He only used parables when speaking in public. Revelation was not speaking in public.


I'm fully aware the above post has no verses to back it up. I also am aware how many feel about extra  Biblical sources.
It's just that I think knowing their society makes it easier to understand what Jesus thaught. I'm sure when He would preach today He wouldn't speak about wheat and tars because most people today think food grows in pots and plastic bags :winkgrin:
Today He would speak about cars, planes and stockmarkets.
