I'm a chess player. And I'm interested in hearing from anyone else who likes the game. Do we have any chess masters here at the Tent? If so, lets here a few pointers!
Anyway, I just think its a great game, and the whole process of studying it and practicing has had a very positive impact on me. Chess is such a complex game, that it causes me to think very deeply in order to understand what it is and all the strategies and tactics. And that process has been good for my mind and Spirit. And I believe God uses it to impact me in these positive ways. I love how God isn't limited to only using religious things to teach and grow us! Thats about it for now.
Total novice here that's gotten to play two or three times over the last 10 years. Totally beat the tar out of someone one time that's supposed to be really really good, but it was one of those flukes where I have no idea how I did it. I learned from a little kid's book in the children's section of the library 'cause one of the things that people tend to forget when they write the books for adults is that not everybody's been playing since they were 2 years old :laughing7:
Books and books and books at the public library on strategy and I had to resort to a book for a second grader to learn the basic moves. The strategies are useless to anyone who doesn't know that each piece only has a certain way that it's allowed to move. That'll preach, but I won't hijack the thread. I hope this thread turns into one of the 7 to 10 page threads so that maybe I can get out of the phase of being so ignorant about the game.

:cloud9: I always wanted to learn how to play it, but never did. I saw that they were using it in inner city schools to get the kids to think deeply and that it had an effect on their grades as a result. Blessings....
I don't know a thing about chess but I am pretty good at checkers.
Chess looks boreing and complicated to me. I like fast pace games.

I used to think that, too. But it really is fun. My husband and I will play and we'll do like 3 moves a piece each night. We just play for fun. We're not like chess masters or anything...lol.

It probably is fun. I'm just an old stick in the mud. Chess is just a game I never had a chance to play and it did look boreing, kind of like golf and baseball. Maybe it's because I am a boring person is why I think these sports are boreing. I like football, basketball, and racing. Racing is my favorite. Go Dale Junior!!!! :laughing7:

If you like racing you can concider Blitz or even Bullet chess.....
I bought a chess computer last year. I'm now able to beat all of the levels consistently:-)
Computers get better and better at playing chess. Not to mention ever increasing speed.
Grandmasters are quite often defeaten by a bucket of silicon chips.
In this thread chess is to be said one of the most complex games. Yet some/many say checkers (I hope that's the right word for the game I mean) is more complex.
Checkers can be a handful. But I've been wondering if I'm able to solve a Rubiks cube (http://www.rubiks.com) as an adult without moving the stickers around, like I did in my preteens:-)
The way that I was able to learn chess, since all of the adult books confused me on it. Never was able to find a good introductory one with adults being the intended audience. So, I went to the children's part of the public library and found a book on how to play chess. Once I had those basics down, then all of the other books, written to any age/experience level started making sense. But I never could get my foot in the door with the intro stuff written to adults.
:cloud9: You know, Martin, that's true of Biblical things as well. When my kids were little and I read to them out of Bible stories books at bedtime, I'd see things in there I had missed observing in THE Book, LOL. The kids loved me reading them, but especially got a kick out of Mom's reactions to certain ones, LOL.....Blessings....
