Title: A conversation?
Post by: micah7:9 on February 08, 2017, 11:05:28 AM
Joh 12:4-5  Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,  Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?

It would seem John knew the identity of the betrayer before, the incident occurred. Just how did John know this? Or am I reading this wrong?

Joh 12:6  This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

Did John have some special insight?  Was John judging when he wrote this? How did John know this of Judas, that he was a thief and would betray Jesus? Judas was chosen and taught right along with all the disciples and all were taught not to judge.
Jesus certainly knew his disciples, He chose them, Jesus surely knew if Judas was a thief but how did John?

John did write this correct?

Am I reading this wrong?  :Peace2:

No special insight. It was, as you know, written long after the fact. I 'm not sure what this grammatical construction is called in English but I think subordinate clause.
Basically is correct information but not directly related to the verse. Neither is in chronological order. We see the same construction about Judas being dead long before Jesus.

It just states your hobby, not that you are posting here during a marathon.

Your favorite food has no real connection with posting here, but stil is a fact.

Micah, 2014 lotto winner, posted 7 times today January 3, 2013 on Tentmaker.
This one is closest to your verses.
In 2017 I'm writing about your activities in 2013 and mention you won the lottery after that date but long before I wrote a book about you.
I know because both facts are in the past, not because I have special insight.

The Gospels may read like blow-by-blow accounts, but keep in mind that they were written long after the events, leaving room for editorialization and inserted comments, or are those the same thing?

It's like keeping a mental frame around the story, or keeping in mind that in "true life" accounts of survival on your TV, that there is someone behind the camera and most likely a support crew as well.

Yes, I agree with WW and Laz. Kinda like how did Matthew know to record that it was Moses and Elijah in the vision transfiguration (Mat. 17)?

John 3;22 " Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this, and they believed the
scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken."

John 6;71 " Now He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, one of the 12, was going to betray Him."

John 7;39 " Now He said this about the spirit, which those who believed in Him were to receive;
for the spirit was not yet present because Jesus had not yet been glorified."

John 12;16 " His disciples DID NOT UNDERSTAND THESE THINGS AT FIRST;
but when Jesus was glorified they remembered these things which had been written about Him."

John 13;2 " The devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus."

*** John 13;19 " I am telling you now BEFORE IT DOES HAPPEN, so that when it takes place you will believe that I am He."

vs 22 " His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know whom He was speaking about."

John 14;29 " Now I have told you before it happens, that when it happens you may believe."

John 16;18 " So they kept saying,
' What is this little while of which He speaks? We do not understand what He is talking about."

All seems to say the writings, been done many years later, were presented to show how their journey now made more sense to John as he reflected/recorded  what had occurred through the walk with Christ.

After His resurrection Christ explained the whole process. He had needed to be crucified to fulfil the law before making this known, otherwise the people would have made Him king before His resurrection which paid for the sin of the world.

Acts 1;3 " To these He also presented Himself alive, by many convincing truths, being seen by them over a period of 40 days."
The whole process of pointing out how everything linked together through what had happened and why.

I think everybody who claims never having focused so much on an isolated verse/fact that bigger whole was overlooked doesn't speak the whole truth

Seriously, learn from it because not everything is so obvious. I already hinted at a verse: Mat 27:6 Did Judas die before Jesus? The answer seems a very obvious yes. Until you start studying the number of apostles He met after His resurrection.

Glich is a common pass-time. Could be latin for ' did I do that?'  So much a necessity for leaning and the reminder to keep looking.
Paul does make the observation about the wisdom of man being a problem for the Greeks, so rely on our Father for everything.
Seems we all go through this at many points so as not to become vain/proud/arrogant.
We are still brothers regardless of the 'oops'.
