Hi everyone,
I'm in need of a little help with this, trying to reconcile it with other examples such as David's repentance, God promising to restore Israel after it strayed, God forgiving sins when you call upon him and then not remembering our transgressions/sins no more.
Basically, why does it say shame will not be wiped away? What is the context of this verse? All explanations so far have said it extends beyond death, but that doesn't make sense given what I've listed above.
I have meditated on this and thought it was from the view of society not wiping away the shame, and the stigma hanging over the person, but of course, I'm still in that phase of panicking everytime I come across a potentially ET type of scripture. Despite scriptural support, philosophical debate supporting UR, I still panic a little.
Thanks.
QuoteNIV
But a man who commits adultery has no sense;
whoever does so destroys himself.
33 Blows and disgrace are his lot,
and his shame will never be wiped away.
34 For jealousy arouses a husband's fury,
and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35 He will not accept any compensation;
he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.
And in the KJV:
32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
Hi KingKenny
That is part of the old covenanant that Christ fulfills to me ,
the shame that remains , is what we read in Gods Word , as those were examples for us ,
I believe that we dont know them anylonger after the flesh , the Lord Jesus come to make the dead Living to God and that is to make them new in Christ
I dont know if this helps you any , I just think it this way right now for me ,
hope someone else can help you better Blessings in Jesus :friendstu:
2Cr 3:14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which [vail] is done away in Christ.
2Cr 3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
2Cr 3:16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
2Cr 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord [is], there [is] liberty.
2Cr 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, [even] as by the Spirit of the Lord.
2Cr 5:17 Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2Cr 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
2Cr 5:15 And [that] he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
2Cr 5:16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we [him] no more.
2Cr 5:17 Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2Cr 5:18 And all things [are] of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
2Cr 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
2Cr 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech [you] by us: we pray [you] in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
2Cr 5:21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
I have no real answer to this but I want to mention Jews had 2 types/groups of sin.
External: Theft etc.
Internal: Adultery etc. --> The usual punishment for this group is death.
In God's justice system theft can be wiped away by paying 2-7 fold.
But how can adultery be paid back. Surely not by having sex with your own partner for 7x.
Maybe, MAYBE, it's referring to that?
