I was studying the Moabite stone just now, and on line seven I noticed this interesting statement, "and Israel perished with "olam" destruction." I have bolded and underlined that statement.

We know that Israel still existed after this time. This is just more proof to me that the word usually rendered as "everlasting" or "eternal," here taken from the Hebrew "olam," when rendered as an adjective, is not speaking about length of time, but about that which is from God. Quality, not quantity. In this case, Mesha was saying that divine punishment, punishment from his god Chemosh, came upon Israel, not that they were destroyed forever.

Olam life, olam punishment, the olam God, olam covenant, etc, in my findings, all have to do with that which issues from God, not how long they would last. Remembering that the word itself speaks of that which is hidden and hazy, what is on the horizon and beyond, that describes these things perfectly to me.

This is a fascinating find, does anyone have any more information on this line of thought?  This particular find, the Moabite stone, etc?  It is at the very least, a beautiful piece of linguistic proof of the word Olam/Aion, and its use.

Yeah, I don't know brother, good question.  But it sure caught my attention.  :)    It's very interesting to see what guests are reading online (for anyone who doesn't know, you can go to the 'users online' thingy at the bottom of the page and see what folks are doing).  You can run across some excellent topics that way, by going to what others are checking out.   :thumbsup:

Thomas Talbott wrote about this too in The Inescapable Love of God... eternal punishment is punishment from God, not endless punishment...
