Watch out for Gods WRATH

There is nothing more misrepresented in religion than Gods WRATH.

We often hear "Yes God is Love, but he is also wrath"   

The reality of this is that God is LOVE and that is his inherant nature, so Gods wrath will have the nature of Love.

In the old testament we read how wrath should not be used.

Gn 49:7 Cursed [be] their anger, for [it was] fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

Ex 32:14 So Yahweh showed mercy concerning the evil which He spoke of doing to His people.
While we can read  more verses that appear to contradict this notion,  there simply is the depiction that Gods Wrath was always for the ultimate GOOD.


Hab 3:2 O LORD, I have heard thy speech, [and] was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.


I can't find the verse right off hand that speaks of a man hoping to be turned over to God and not men for judgment.

Hey Paul:  I think these are the verses that you are looking for. 2 Sam 24:11-14.

After David numbered his troops, the Prophet Gad has this to say concerning David.  Note the choices and David's response.

2Sam:24:11-14: For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying, Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee. So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land?  or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee?  or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land?  now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me. And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

2Samuel 24:14: And David said to Gad, "I am in great distress. Please let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man."

This one from 2Samuel 24 is a really hard one to reconcile with an eternal torment presupposition, even presuming the mildest, most benign torments FOREVER 'cause the greatest cruelties a human being can inflict upon another human being presuppose they can't last more than a century on an individual.  Even presuming nothing more than an ETERNAL annoyance, going through the worst an Islamic terrorist or the Bush Administration could have thrown at you IF THEY'D BELIEVED you were an Islamic terrorist is completely insignificant beside ANYTHING discomforting that's PERPETUAL.

1 Chronicles 21:13
David said to Gad, "I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is very great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men."


That is an awesum verse...One of my favourites this one...And lets not forget how 'imperfect' David was...(Adulterer/Murderer/Homosexual offender?  (It IS debateable), and yet, 'a man after God's own heart.

The point is, David STILL trusted God above men for mercy.

This really hits the nail on the head.  People so often mistake characteristics with nature.  God's nature, that is WHO HE IS, is love.  This means that every one of His attributes (even His wrath, which is more of a righteous indignation than blind rage) flow out of that love.  I guess I would call God's wrath His "tough love."  And for those who say "How can you can call the harsh punishments in the OT tough love?"  my only response is ask any 5 year old who just got spanked and sent to their room what they think of their parent....
