Were we spirits before we were born on earth?

I am leaning toward the belief that we have lived in spirit with God before we were born here on earth.
I may be able to find scriptures to prove or disprove this, I lately am feeling a bit homesick to be in heaven with God.
Is it possible or probable we chose to live here in the flesh for experience of an earthly life?
If others believe this are you starting to feel a little homesick?
I mentioned to family members I want to go home they think I am depressed.
I don't believe I am, but feel I want to go home but why would I want to go home if I have never been there before?
Any scriptures thoughts or conversation would be appreciated.

  Hi SQ ,
I sure  know what you mean ...
I only found this so far
makes me wonder too , Did we come out from God ? in the spirit form I am assuming
when I read Genesis  chapter one .. I do wonder it seems to be Perfect  dont it  :icon_flower:

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

Ecc 12:2   While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

Ecc 12:3   In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

Ecc 12:4   And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;

Ecc 12:5   Also [when] they shall be afraid of [that which is] high, and fears [shall be] in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

Ecc 12:6   Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

Ecc 12:7   Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Ecc 12:8   Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all [is] vanity.

I  maybe depressed  and maybe weary even , I cannot tell
But can relate to your  words friend  :HeartThrob:  in love rose

Hi guys.  I think of Paul wanting to be with Jesus.  He said to be absent from his body was to be with the Lord.  Also, he said "for me to die is gain, for me to live is Christ".  I too think Paul wanted to go home, but knew that was the Lord's decision and in the meantime, he had a purpose to serve here.

I don't know to what extent we existed with God before.  I believe to one degree or another, because for our spirits to RETURN to God Who gave it, then it would have needed to have been there in the first place - I would think.  How conscious or aware that state was, I dont know.  Also, we've heard so much about what being with Jesus will be like, peace, no more pain, no more tears, etc.  Who really wouldn't want to go there?!

God's blessing, James.
The oldest known manuscripts agree with each other 99% of the time.  The scriptures, accurately translated, Spirit revealed - reliable.   Looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith.  Heb. 12:2

Looking around this world, this beautiful earth... and there is a part of you that knows that it's not supposed to be this way. That something is amiss. Something is missing. You long for beauty to return in every way imaginable. You long for love to return in every way imaginable. You see neglect, abuse, abandonment, hatred, ignorance, prejudice, selfishness, and every dark thing lurking about in the corners of the world and some dark things in the corner of your own mind. Yet, even through the darkness and the things that cloud beauty, you still see rays of sunshine all around as well. You still see glimmers of hope, of beauty, of selflessness, of light and love all around.

The homesick feeling is just you, your being, your spirit longing to be BACK HOME where all darkness is finally chased away. Where the things that you imagine in your heart, the way things "OUGHT to be"...are.

To help put the homesick feling in perspective..

Romans 14:8
8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.

Whether or not we existed with God before.. most of the time I DO have this vague, familiar sense that we DID. But either way... I think that homesick feeling perhaps is built into us.
We know that this current state of things is not our home. In our hearts, we see what CAN be... and we long for it. And I think that is quite possibly... the way God intended this journey to be.

Romans 8:18 - For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance

This waiting for it with hope and perservance is pretty much the same feeling as being "homesick". (to me, anyway.)

(and however way the kingdom will be manifest... the "waiting" for it with hope and perservance remains until the earth is full of the knowledge of the Lord as the water covers the sea and He is all in all.)

Just some thoughts... :HeartThrob:

We all lived in God'd lungs....  :bgdance:

Genesis 2:7  And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

5397 neshamah {nesh-aw-maw'}
Meaning:
1) breath, spirit
1a) breath (of God)
1b) breath (of man)
1c) every breathing thing
1d) spirit (of man)
Origin:  from 05395; TWOT - 1433a; n f
Usage:  AV - breath 17, blast 3, spirit 2, inspiration 1, souls 1; 24

That would mean we originate from inside of God.....
I think  :Chinscratch:
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

:cloud9: WW, you really do have a gift.

God breathing out = our birth into this world/body.

God breathing in = our death/spirit returning to Him. (Note for Martin: this part can be accomplished while still in the body by death to self)

Yeah, I'm gifted. My parents told me so before sending me to that special school :laughing7:

The following is not really solid proof of anything. Likely totally unconnected. But....

Isaiah 55:11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: ....

According to many we are angels.
Angel is a messenger.
Messengers speak words.
Words are partly generated by breath.

Are we actually the words spoken by God?

Isaiah 55:11 .... it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

And we/angel/word/spirit returns after having performed the exact task given by God.
Back to school

It's exactly what the Bible teaches from cover to cover. You're definitely on the right track.  Genesis 1:26 is precisely what man is made out of, in addition to any specific callings, and anything else God's said of us.  The whole Bible is His construction/reconstruction of the New Man.  KJV in describing people that were being born again in the book of Acts says that the Word of God multiplied.  And that ties into 1Peter 1:23.  I've been toying with the idea recently because of how incredibly and impossibly detailed that our DNA is that perhaps it's our spirits. Minimally it's the result of our spirits as when you breathe on a cold window and fog it up.  Our DNA as the Temple has really been rolling over in my mind over and over and over again, since your DNA stores lifestyle factors and what you succumb to and towards more and more in order to pass them on to future generations. And in Word of Faith circles, particularly in the crowds that Charles Capps ministers to, some of the biggest miracles of physical healing, restoration to wholeness, and renewal of the youth are occuring as the DNA itself is deliberately addressed with the Written Word of God and confessions based upon redemptive provisions of it.

Even the book of Isaiah talks about this archiving that goes on in our beings.  I pretty much already know all of the arguments that would be raised against this idea with the passage that says that our spirits return to God that gave 'em, but that's still a comeback that would come from someone that thinks that any geographical location is closer to Him than any other.  Anyway, it's not a dogmatism of mine, and it's occured to me that some of the ideas I'm toying with may form some of the basis for why the Concordant crowd will say that our souls are nothing but the combination of our spirits with our flesh.  The soul is something other than that, and so is the spirit, but in terms of finding it geographically since you can't dice someone up finely enough to find either spirit or soul both because of the catch-22 that once you've done so they're sorta gone, but also the question marks that surround whether it's entirely in another dimension, but if it is, then how it goes about animating the flesh, et. al.

And those that have dealt with many exorcisms and angelic and ghost encounters likewise know that there's partial materialization on the part of spirits and souls in order to have any contact with this realm and for anyone anywhere, whether human or animal that's still dwelling in flesh to be aware of them. For the dogmatists about no conscious existence after death, I guess a bunch of ghosts are just people and animals sleep walking on some of the old American Revolutionary and American Civil War battle fields, old theatres, manors, and plantations from previous eras, etc.!  And I'm currently messing with the idea of whether or not that's DNA.  DNA exists after the person dies, but there's nothing to say that the spirit going back to God that gave it requires any geographical shifts, since passage into the heavens, Scripturally, easily happens within us.

Obviously for the extra-corporeal manifestations that would beg some questioning, by some means, whether a new as yet undeveloped type of microscope or a previous type being better understood that it'll likewise note anything about which chain within DNA or factor within how DNA either behaves towards certain external or internal chemical factors that would help it to project into an outward visible manifestation, whether ghosts are the passage of gas from or thru mitochondria, the breaking down of the seed, or perhaps even fermentation as a wine towards resurrection as Christ Jesus administers the process by which He's conforming all things to Himself that's mentioned in Philippians 3:21 and other places, etc.  Or if it even the RNA run amuck, if a geographical location were plausible for spirits and souls post humously.

Anyway, this is one out of about 3 dozen passages that are among the meditations that I'm toying with lately that aren't intended to be a new doctrine, but just something I'm looking at for further insight and the adjustment of my ideas in order to gain greater precision in my understanding:

21 "As for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD. "My Spirit, who is on you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth, or from the mouths of your children, or from the mouths of their descendants from this time on and forever," says the LORD.  Isaiah 59:21

That  would mean God is not omni-present

Thinking out loud.
Lazarus=Spirit. Rich man=flesh.
Soul=interface between the two. Soul=bridge. A bridge that after completed building crosses the divide between flesh and spirit.

Reminds me of a scientist in a cartoon. He kept zooming in on material with his microscope. Up to sub-molecular.
Then he zoomed in even move and saw somethng that looked like words. Zoomed in even more: "Made by God" :laughing7:

If God is everywhere we are already in/one with God. So no movement is needed. Perhaps same place other dimention.

It is also noted, what spirit/breath are you of?  We might not always know.

An angel can also be a messenger of satan, a lying spirit.

13For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

14And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

--2Cor 11

Where does this 'transformation' take place--in the minds and hearts of men?  So like gives birth to like?

Words are very powerful.

But, if we speak/breathe the word of God, we can become part of the increase of God.

Acts 6:7
And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Getting messy now...
If good words are good spirits, then bad words are bad spirits.
The question is than are they "messengers OF satan" or "messengers LIKE satan"
Satan has no creative powers.
But the potter makes vessels of honour (good words/sprits) and vessels of wrath (bad words/spirits).
So the potter speaks good (love/truth) words but also speaks bad (hate/lies) words.
That would mean God also lies.....  :msealed:

The above post by WhiteWings is really something awesome.

I have been with my mother most of the day so wasn't able to check this thread yet.
My mom said she didn't expect to be here much longer being 80 and her health, I said we are born and then we die then we live again.
She said that sure sounds like one messed up situation.
I really thought it would help but unfortunately it didn't.
Anyway you all have gave me much to consider, one thing though I don't think we are angels when we die but may be wrong.

If you look up the meaning of the word angel in Greek you see it means messenger. Possibly/likely only a messenger of the word of God.
When we are dead and have met God face to face do we still need messengers? Nothing more to message...
It also depends on what you think an angel is. That standard winged creature you see on church paintings? I think messenger isn't really a creature or race of something but a function. The Bible describes different winged creatures all called angel but all have a different apperance. Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, etc. Some have 1 face. Others have 4 faces.

So if you just look at the function of a messenger it's not unlikely we can be messengers too. That said it's not a certainty for me.
