sermon on the mount

I was reading the Sermon on the Mount, and I don't think I'm a real Christian. :sigh: I mean, I get angry with people and I'm trying to forgive them, I have a contradicting attitude- either I hate myself or I'm arrogant, and I don't think I do enough for Christ. How can I change?

Sermon on the Mount isn't to Christians at all.  Jesus was correcting things that Jews were getting thru really bad teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees.  Prayer Closet is about the Jewish Prayer Shawl and wrapping your head up in it, etc.  Except your righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees, et. al.  Not written to Christians at all. 

Much of what Jesus said would apply to both Jews and Christians, but some things, the Jewish overtones are too clear and don't have New Testament counterparts, such as with Matthew 23, etc. to where He's not yelling at Christians or the world, but is specifically talking in and to a Jewish context.  Which often winds up being both a matter of what seems impossible for Christians to obey, plus some of the commentary materials that'll indicate line by line things related to Judaism specifically and relating to standards being specifically meant prior to the crucifixion/resurrection of Jesus Christ. 

Studying Acts and things from Romans to Hebrews will give you a better idea of rightly dividing things that are specifically Christian and things that are limited to Old Testament Judaism in the 4 Gospels.  Not everything, but some things were just totally changed between the Old Testament and New Testament and Jesus was ministering sorta as the bridge between both, speaking some things exclusively to Old Testament Judaism and some things exclusively to us.

But what about the advice and the beautitudes in Sermon on the Mount and that stuff?
