No offence to the writer, but I think he is basically unsure of any conclusion.

It appears he sways more to annhiliation though.   But, perhaps he in his own conscience is taking the "better safe than sorry" road by pointing out what he does then saying ultimatly it is up to God. Even then appears to shy away from giving as much credibilioty to the notion that all men will be redeemed.

Yeah, I got those impressions as well. It's interesting to note that he seems to be saying that it's both "up to God" and "up to us". It appears that he is some form of conditionalist.
Hi Doc
this is  a great thread and thoughts
and I do agree that there are conditions  and standards  the Lord God has  that must be met
in order to  receive of God
I know that He cleans  us ,  we have to be emptied  out in order for His to fill us / being taught the Word in Power by His HOLY SPIRIT

Hi Doc,

I quickly read the last section on "hell".

It seems that N.T. Wright is assuming we have a free will.  I don't want to get into a big free will debate.  Let me just quickly state my opinion (which I believe is confirmed by scripture):  we have a will and we make choices but those choices are all caused by circumstances, desire, envrionment, and experience.  We have a caused will, not a free will.

This is what he presents as the universalist case:

"In fact, I think the universalist case — which normally turns on God having all the time in the world, after the death of unbelievers, to go on putting the gospel to them from different angles until at last they accept it"

This makes it sound like God could be sitting around almost forever thinking up new ways of showing the gospel, hoping against hope until that last hold-out finally converts of their own free will.  While he could take all the time in eternity if he wanted to to do this, he doesn't have to.

The fact of the matter is that God knows exactly what makes each of us tick (since he personally created each of us as individuals) - and he knows exactly what it will take for each person to willingly confess and believe.  But that will not happen until God's appointed time - each person must go through their own appointed trials and tribulations before God will open their eyes to the truth.  And then when God has opened their eyes, they will willingly believe.

Think about what led you to Christ and belief in UR.  Usually there are a number of large events (and many smaller events) in your life that ultimately led you to that point.  Were those events random chance, or were they preordained by God - all leading up to the moment when God preordained your eyes would open and learn the truth?

IMHO I believe it will work the same way for those in the lake of fire.  The lake of fire is spiritual - it may be just another series of trials and tribulations that will ultimately lead to the individual's eyes being opened and then confessing that Jesus is their savior.

Everything will go according to God's plan, right down to the last detail.  Everyone has their appointed time to be saved, either in this life or in the lake of fire.

Cheers,
Legoman

What he said .  I also personally wonder if the Lake of Fire may be God's DIRECT presence...which as far I know, no man has of yet been exposed to.  My  :2c:.
that is profound  Jabcat  , Honestly I can see this as being True

what if within God/Fire   we are changed ?

And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth.

Deu 5:25 Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die.

Deu 5:26 For who [is there of] all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we [have], and lived?

And don't forget 1 Cor 3:
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

This fire (which is God's consuming fire) refines and purifies, transforms us for the better, and is part of the process that saves us.

So why would the fire in the Lake of fire be any different? :Sparkletooth:

Notice the key phrasing in 1 Cor 3:  Every man ... every man's work ... tried (judged) by fire

Now look at what happens in the lake of fire in Rev 20:
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

We see again: Every man ... judged according to their works .. in the lake of fire.

Hm, is this giving us a better picture of what the lake of fire will do?

Cheers,
Legoman

aul came in fear and trembling amoung them in the beginning didnt he? It speaks of giving one a "cup of trembling" and we know the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Concerning the cup of trembling Paul does speak of not being given **AGAIN** a Spirit of fear which is consistent with the cup of trembling being removed from them and the words, "Thou shalt no more drink of it AGAIN"... They do appear connect experientially at one time or another both there, in Paul and Pauls words and the beginning of wisdom (though we know thats not the end all).

Mainly what I am saying is I have never felt afraid of God.  However I have trembled at the sheer awe of circumstances that I have faced that let me have an understanding that God is there.

Actually, the original argument was not on fear, but on the power of evil.  If God created evil, that evil was as powerful as God himself . .that was what I was arguing.  I don't see it that way at all.  God may have created evil . .but as a tool of consequence.  but the tool I make is not more powerful than I who made it.  It has a singular purpose.  It doesn't have it's own will.  And we've been given authority over it.  It's just that most don't exercise that authority.  Instead, the become intimidated and, like Adam, they submit to that which they are supposed to subdue.

Adam was given authority over Eve, but he didn't exercise it.  My spirit has authority over my mind, but it needs to exercise that authority to be productive in the way God intended.  Apply?  When you walk in the spirit, the spiritual realm will be revealed to you.  When I walk according to my own understanding, I remain in disorder.

I agree YY.

If God is in control of all things (and we know he is), then he is also in control of evil.

He uses evil for his good purposes.

Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

I actually find it comforting to know there is a purpose for all the evil in the world, even if I don't understand it.

Hebrews 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

That is humbling.

Hiya,

I am most definitely far from dualistic zoroastianism.

If you thought that from what I wrote, I have much to say to you concerning the reality of good and evil and their purpose in creation.

God is in control of all things, whether a person wants to admit it or not, He purposed evil with a pure intention in mind.

Evil is a real possibility and a danger to all who fall into it's path.

God intended evil to operate in that manner for a purpose.

It is the lack of knowledge of the purpose which invokes fear.

When Hebrews 4 goes indepth about laboring only for the purpose of finding that place of rest, there doesn't seem to be any indication that being afraid is involved.  Isn't it kind of difficult to pursue the thing you're supposed to be scared of??

Doc

Quote from: Nathan on January 14, 2009, 05:02:23 PM
My response was to the idea that if God created it, then the creation is as powerful as God.  I disagree with that on many levels.  God created the tree of knowledge . .but Adam was instructed to leave it alone . . . just because it's created by God doesn't mean that we should treat it as "powerful" as God.  God created Eve by Adam's rib . .but Adam was to have authority over her.

God created man, but man is not equally powerful as God . . .for me it's the same with evil.  Whether God created it or not, it's not anything I really need to be concerned with if I'm pursuing Christ.  That was the point I was trying to make with that.  Seek ye "first" the kingdom of God . . .make that the "chief" objective and everything else will take care of itself.

Maybe it's just me, I feel sort of a check, like a misplacement of priority when the topic of a person is focussed on the negative of anything.  God created night, but the day is to rule over the night.  Time is measured with light, speed is measured by light . . . darkness is actually a temporary thing anyway.  As is evil and all of that.  It's all been defeated, but yet theologians seem  to want to resurrect it again by warning everyone of how great it's powers are . . . I just disagree with the concept is all.

This is also a good point. Thanks, Nathan.

I have know both personally    And I rather not have the first   Though it does speak of being afraid of anothers "terror" which holds the same definition of that which pertains to the Lords "terror" but Paul adds the words "be not afraid of their terror". It speaks of us knowing the terror of the Lord as well as the fear and trembling Paul knew of at the first. Does seem very much related to the Spirit of fear (or cup of trembling) He said they would not drink of anymore (again).

Though heres a good one showing both

Job 21:33 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

Hiya Nathan,

I believe you misunderstand the point I was making then.

Evil is only as powerful as God has created it to be.

God created evil, with a purpose in mind.

Therefore, evil is as strong as God has intended it to be.

Whether this invokes fear in you or not, does not make the facts any different.

God did not invoke that fear, our own misunderstanding or incomplete knowledge of how evil works, invokes fear.

It is not what comes into a man that defiles him, it is what comes out of a man that defiles him.

QuoteHey I love the clouds without water and without fear one Rosie!

Thats pride for sure

Proverbs 25:14 Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.

The fear of the Lord is to actually "Hate" pride arrogance and the evil way = way of Cain?

Think these fit?

2Peter 2:17 ~These~ are WELLS ~WITHOUT WATER~, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.

Jerm 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have ~FORSAKEN ME~ the fountain of LIVING WATERS and hewed them out cisterns, BROKEN CISTERNS, that CAN HOLD NO WATER.

Heb 3:12  Take heed, brethren, lest there be ~IN~ ANY OF YOU an evil heart of unbelief, IN departing from the LIVING GOD.

those  are some great scriptures to sis !
I love Proverbs 8  Wisdom speaking  :HeartThrob:

O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

Pro 8:6 Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips [shall be] right things.

Pro 8:7 For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness [is] an abomination to my lips.

Pro 8:8 All the words of my mouth [are] in righteousness; [there is] nothing froward or perverse in them.

Pro 8:9 They [are] all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
Pro 8:10 Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.

Pro 8:11 For wisdom [is] better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

Pro 8:12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.

Pro 8:13 The fear of the LORD [is] to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

Yes the Lord  God has  allowed evil as a contrast  in that knowledge
of the tree of good and evil

we are to Choose Life and that Tree  that bears good  fruits / works to God  for His glory
Jesus Christ  is that tree  with seed/ word of God   that is incorruptible
I do not sesire to get off topic , but everything in His Word and Sprit  connects in Truth
And the earth brought forth grass, [and] herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed [was] in itself, after his kind: and God saw that [it was] good.

Gen 1:13 And the evening and the morning were the third day
after 3 days will the Lord  raise up seeing Jesus Christ in everything and in all ways

Mar 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and [of] the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

The latter part of this thread reminds me of a camera that is on manual focus and things are a bit blurry . .but as adjustments (comments of others) are made, the picture comes into focus.  YY, I appreciate your last post.  And if I would have seen that was you're original intent, I never would have questioned it.  I agree with you, thanks for clearing that up for me.

:icon_jokercolor: :icon_joker:

Yes I agree.

God made everything for its purpose, even evil.

Proberbs 16:4 The LORD has made everything for its own purpose,
Even the wicked for the day of evil.

Everything God made was "very good".  How does evil fit in there?  Well, it is very good for the purpose that God intended it for.

Just like mosquitos, poisonous snakes and scorpions were "very good", right?

Cheers,
Legoman

we could not learn anything without the contrast

and the extremes   of  carnal / worldly wisdom , being earthly sensual and devilish
and Heavenly  wisdom , pure peacable  and holy
