Genesis 10:25  And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

That would mean Peleg lived approx 21,000 years ago

Not sure I agree with the timeline assumed to be in the tens of thousands of years . .but I would think that something of this magnitude would have more explanation rather than a comment that appears to be more of an afterthought.  Very odd.

It's . . .it's almost like the natural things of this earth's experiences don't matter all that much to God. :omg:

How'd you find something like that???  Don't tell me you're actually a reader of the begats?????

I'm a little slow. What does this support or refute? It suggests that people have been here for more than 6000 years but that doesn't surprise me at all. We get too hung up on the numbers. What am I missing?

I don't know, what I do know is I keep thinking that one name says Pegleg!!!!

Begats?  :umnick: eegads  :Chinscratch:  I only know Asgards :laughing7:

More than 6000 years doesn't suprise  me either.
Science claims otherwise.
Bible genealogy studies show/prove that  timeline presented in the Bible is not complete; so people's ages can't be added up to come to 6000 (or 10000) years since Adam and Eve. Even when assuming 6 24-hour creation days.

The use of this post?
Nothing more as presented in the first post. AFAIK it has nothing to do with the religious aspect of the Bible. But for me it's just a little extra proof that at least all none spiritual things are correct.
I just stumbled on this 'fact' and decided to share it.

QuoteHow'd you find something like that
I opened a Bible and I noticed there where verses in it!
I picked one randomly and posted it. Thats all  :laughing7:

WW,

(Joshua 19:49) When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to J oshua the son of Nun among them.

It seems the dividing of land was simply for an inheritance.

1 Chronicles 1:19  And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided: and his brother's name was Joktan.

Good point CHB.
This is the first verse that mentions Joshua.
QuoteExodus 17:9  And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

This is the first verse that mentions Moses.
QuoteExodus 2:10  And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.

Your verse is after Exodus. My verse is before Exodus.
Correct me if wrong but had the Jews any land to divide during that period? They where just slaves or nomads during that period. So even if my verse simply points to dividing wealth it can't be the same dividing wealth as shown in your verse because somewhere in between they had barely food to share...
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

Just looking at the names it seems more likely to be what I wrote in my first post than simply deviding of wealth...?

Strong's
QuoteEber or Heber = "the region beyond"
Meaning:  Peleg = "division"

Barnes
Quoteבר  'eber, "'Eber, yonder side; verb: pass, cross."
פלג  peleg, "Peleg; noun: brook, canal; verb:

Clarke
QuotePeleg - From פלג  palag, to divide, because in his days, which is supposed to be about one hundred years after the flood, the earth was divided among the sons of Noah. Though some are of opinion that a physical division, and not a political one, is what is intended here, viz., a separation of continents and islands from the main land; the earthy parts having been united into one great continent previously to the days of Peleg. This opinion appears to me the most likely, for what is said, Gen_10:5, is spoken by way of anticipation.

NET (added to please CHB  :laughing7:)
Quote83 tn The expression "the earth was divided" may refer to dividing the land with canals, but more likely it anticipates the division of languages at Babel (Genesis 11). The verb פָּלָג (palag, "separate, divide") is  used in Psa_55:9 for a division of languages.

No, I agree with you WW.  I find it really curious is all.  I assumed the earth did it's dividing when the flood happened as it says not only did it rain, but springs basically broke through the crust of the earth (totally paraphrasing that).  But this happened 4 chapters after the fact . . . I just wonder what that was all about.

I also used to blindly think the earth was only 6 thousand years old because that's all the further back the Bible goes and all of the measuring devices they use to tell the age of bones and dirt and stuff . .had to be off.

But then I realized that Scripture is not history of the earth, it's the history of man and his relationship with the Father.  I'm a gap-theroist in all of this demensional stuff . . .that is pretty much one of the very few original opinions on biblical matters that I've not had removed.  Even so, it's all still theory.  But this really is an interesting mishap you've accidentally by random tripped over.

Two of quite a few site that show that the Bible genealogy isn't to be used to count the age of humanity.

The animation/article in my first post isn't really about the earth breaking open. The water is from melting ice.

Sciences GUESSWORK is full of holes concerning the "dating" of events... It states these things, NOT as possible timeframes, but as if they are ABSOLUTE... and gullible readers just accept that notation...

Science has gone back and forth about the "Origin" of the Earth... determining 4+Billion years... then use DAYS which are required of Earth's PRESENCE in order to BE, note the UNIVERSE as 13-17 BILLION "years"...

This is pretty dumb... How can DAYS of which compose YEARS exist, when the object which determines DAYS, did not even exist?

Therefore, they deduce "TIME" (9-13 Billion "years") without its FOUNDATION... (earth)  :dontknow:

This is an interesting thought WW, but what does it matter Bro?  that the definition of the name of one of the sons is "DIVISION"?

First, if PELEG means "earthquake"... and EARTHQUAKE is a SEISMIC event, not a GLACIAL event...  I'm sure GLACIERS DO effect the LANDSCAPE of earth (I've visited one - pretty awesome to see)...

But I question that ICE forming on the SURFACE of the Earth, can "CUT it in TWO"... especially within the lifetime of 2 MEN...

What "earth" was DIVIDED?  Where does the context of Gen 10:25 define absolutely that this was a LITERAL -- DIVISION of the Earth's LAND MASS?  :mshock:

That the DIVISION was noted of "earth" between 2 brothers, does not have any impact on anything regardless... other than if it were actually TRUE, it simply  changes Earthly "timeline" thinking from 6,000 years to 21,000 years... and even then remains a POST FLOOD event...

I tend to think that the FLOOD could have easily cause a reformation of the Earth surfaces... but a LANDBOUND ICEBERG?  Sorry, ...I don't buy it...  :dontknow: (not that my opinion :pointlaugh: ...matters!)

Hey... This "glacier theory", must remain a possibility, that I must consider... but certainly NOT as an ABSOLUTE...  because some "scientist"  which lives in these "modern times" (which is full of himself, and his "vast knowledge") :laughing7: ...GUESSES that a GLACIAL event took place that DIVIDED the Earth into continents, 21,000 "years" ago... :mnah:

Heck... that guy, in all likelihood, can't even remember what he had for dinner 2 weeks ago, how may we depend on such a mental GIANT as he?  :laughing7: (Not that ...I can!   hmmm  :Chinscratch: ...was it steak or salmon, or maybe a McDucks cheeseburger?  :LH:)

The "memory" of men, as are the Knowledge and CONJECTURES of MEN ...weak, insubstancial and definitely fallible, ...as is our collective ability to behold the WORD, timeframe and Creation of YHVH...  :sigh:  Its all just too big for us little TIME CONFINED, (minisculely) SPACE oriented, creatures to grasp...   :heat: :pointlaugh:

These type of statements ("earth divided") are often SPIRITUAL... Even the geneologies are part of the WORD of GOD which is COMPLETELY a SPIRITUAL entity, ...which can and DOES have SPIRTUAL (not necessarily, LITERAL) meaning...

I think names matter a lot in the Bible. If you string them together you get a summary of the Bible...
Also see Reply #11 for more names.

QuoteBut I question that ICE forming on the SURFACE of the Earth, can "CUT it in TWO"... especially within the lifetime of 2 MEN...
I think that it's more melting of ice. The land is still there as it was in that time. Under the sea. Most likely eroded a lot but not broken in 2 parts.

QuoteWhat "earth" was DIVIDED?  Where does the context of Gen 10:25 define absolutely that this was a LITERAL -- DIVISION of the Earth's LAND MASS?  :mshock:
You have to look at it this way. The connection (bridge) between the 2 continents was a certain amount above sealevel.
Water rose 150 meters and now its below sealevel. Just see it as a flood of 150 meters thats still present today.
Long ago it could walk from my country to Taffy. Now a sea seperates us. No cracked open earth; just extra water.

Anyway my view: Universe is 13.7 ±0.2 billion years old. Earth 4.3 billion years

Here it is... (I will use "your numbers" = Universe is 13.7 ±0.2 billion years old. Earth 4.3 billion years)

(1)  A "YEAR" is a measurement which notes:  the Earth (in 365 of its DAYS), ...making ONE REVOLUTION around it's Sun...

(2)  So if we go back 4.3 BILLION Years, we find ourselves at the "moment" of the ESTABLISHMENT of the EARTH, and WITH that ESTABLISHMENT, ...an EARTH "YEAR" comes INTO EXISTENCE... and begins its FIRST REVOLUTION, which begins its FIRST YEAR... (are you with me so far? -- hope so!)

(3)  Prior to this establishment... of EARTH and its FIRST "YEARLY" cycle... that particular measurement (an Earth "YEAR") did not exist!

So how can any scientist or anyone else, VALIDLY claim that 9.4 BILLION -- "YEARS"... preceeded EARTH's existence when this MEASUREMENT (the Earth "YEAR"), did not even exist?   :dontknow:

The claim "science" makes (Universe is 13.7 ±0.2 billion years old. Earth 4.3 billion years) is saying there is a measurment is employed to note the age of the Universe (earth years), ...prior to the ESTABLISHMENT of the existence of that MEASUREMENT (earth years)...  The Universe existing for 9.4 Billion "years" prior to "years" coming into existence... (do you not see this?)

Very clear now. Fully agree.

Quote(3)  Prior to this establishment... of EARTH and its FIRST "YEARLY" cycle... that particular measurement (an Earth "YEAR") did not exist!
First of all the days used to be 21 hours. Year haven't been stable either. Check out the flood story and you see 360 day years. They seem to have changed near "the sun gone 2 steps back" story.

QuoteSo how can any scientist or anyone else, VALIDLY claim that 9.4 BILLION -- "YEARS"... preceeded EARTH's existence when this MEASUREMENT (the Earth "YEAR"), did not even exist?   :dontknow:
Look at it this way. People without a watch can still count days. Months. Even if they fon't have a watch. With a watch they can 'calculate' the hours in a day. And the total number of hours in the days they counted before the watch.
The age of the universte is measured in several (at least 5 IIRC) independent ways.
For what they call a year they take the current year as reference. So even if there was no sun and earth they keep counting as if they where there. A way of counting is observing size and speed and from that deriving time.
I didn't live 100 years ago; but still I can count back before my own birth.

QuoteThe claim "science" makes (Universe is 13.7 ±0.2 billion years old. (do you not see this?)
I understand. I see nothing illogical in it to be honest.
So not even God knows the exact age of the universe? (rethorical question)
Afteral He also had the problem He couldn't start counting until the sun and earth combo was in existance.

QuoteI sincerely Hope this wording better conveys my thought to you...
Very clear now. I understand your argments. Agree with all/most of them but I honestly don't understand the conclusion you draw from it.
