The key is an original - in the Greek - phrase in verse 5.

The chapter is an insert and total history - all on its own. Read it like that and see if you can spy - I'll make a list:

the virgin birth of the Son of man

Herod the Great - but not directly

the ascension of Jesus

70 A.D.

the flight of Christianity largely and at first to Europe

the inquisition(s)

the Mayflower (that's still included in history lessons isn't it?)

the proliferation of less than desirable/good things as a flood for specific purpose

a coming major drought

and the gathering (of tares) "to make war" to the fire of Armageddon
(read Matthew 23:39 however!!)

note of interest? 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 says the Lord returns with/in/in the midst of, fire. A fire that is "the full and complete punishment". According to the original Greek. Full and complete punishment at the return/"appearing" of the Lord? What about 'hell'? What about all the dead supposedly alive now, and being tortured in 'hell' or tormented in a holding tank of sorts?
