Gehenna in church

Hi!

My family and I went to church today.

I have been feeling led to go to find a community for my kids to benefit from being around other followers of Christ.

One reading today was the passage that says...if your right eye causes you to sin pluck or out, etc...better to go into life maimed than to go into...

Hell right?

Nope!

The pastor said "Gehenna of fire" each time!  We can argue or debate about the meaning of Gehenna but the important thing in my mind is that the translation was kept true to the original, without thedoctrinal bias of hell slipping in.

I am happy for you and yours. When I went to primary school (a UK state school age 5-11), singing a hymn every morning was "part of life". I also heard about Jesus and His life as mother made me a Catholic until I was age 9, then I took up football instead of going to church. We never read from the Bible. I know that my life was affected by knowing about Jesus the Person at that early age by a nice Irish chap called Father Moore. All generic Christ-based teaching has stopped in schools now due to multiculturalism, etc.

In my view, if Christ mentioned a state of Gehenna to which someone may be subjected, then it matters not whether it is assumed a nightmare or a real place – it will be experienced as real, as this separated earth world is experienced as a real, although it is temporary, dust, aging particles - and, in my opinion, illusory, born out of separation from Divine Consciousness through the abuse of the will against God's loving laws.

The causes may be considered hyperbole by some – but to be a true Friend, Christ did not hold back on possible outcomes for gross misconduct against the laws of Love.

I was reading Matthew 5, where Jesus talks about.. if you call your brother (fellow person) fool, you are in danger of being brought before the council (Sanhedrin).. I know you're familiar with the verses.. though I may have it mixed up..

I am now thinking verse 25 is key to the Gehenna reference,

"Reconcile quickly with your adversary, while you are still on the way to court. Otherwise he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison."

And if the dislike/hate ("anger without cause") becomes great enough, the danger becomes the Gehenna fire.. or in more modern terms, the electric chair..? Since it is rumored, because of a Rabbi's account, that Gehenna Valley has been used as a city dump where even the bodies of animals and even criminals where thrown, thus the fires kept burning, and I see no reason to doubt the Rabbi.

It just seems, to me, to fit the dialogue and context.

Though I know ET tends to see the judge as God, the officer as the angels(?) and the jail cell as hell. But I don't think Jesus was referring to any sort of afterlife..

But again, assumption, based on "doctrinal bias"! The preconceived notion of afterlife torment "slipping in".
