Here are some interesting verses regarding God Speed:

2Jn 1:9  Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 
2Jn 1:10  If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 
2Jn 1:11  For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

So if we are to do unto other as we'd have them do unto us, then what do we say about those verses above?

I had a friend point this verse out to me years ago and she said it was why she couldn’t believe.. Bit the interlinear says not to invite that one into “the house” and the first ‘churches’ were in houses.. So I figure that’s what it means, not to accept one who brings “another gospel” into the church. But I didn’t know that at the time!

Also, thinking about this verse, it would be hard for a Ur body to fellowship with a body that strongly puts forth the “turn or burn forever” gospel/good news/“glad tidings to all.. And watch them deliver their message which a UR believer does not agree with.

In my opinion, I think that Matthew Henry's commentary is immediately helpful in drilling down into the background. He has the aforementioned deceivers (v7) described as those that were teachers of the time saying that the Christ was yet to be expected, and as a consequence, denying the Lord that bought them, so to speak. He suggests that "the elect lady" was possibly like Gaius, "of whom we read in the next epistle, is a generous housekeeper, and hospitable entertainer of travelling ministers and Christians".

The Elder was wary of such deceivers affecting the faith in the doctrine of Christ already gained in such a generous household, as it appears news of travelling "deceivers" had probably reached "Headquarters" and the Elder and "the elect lady" were good friends and he cared deeply for her and the Mission of Christ as inseparable, and she was urged neither to bless deceivers enterprises or bid them God speed in their anti-Christ teaching. This does not mean that they should not be afforded the basic relief of pressing necessities – the lady is of the Christ-Light after all, but rather it means their bad service should not be given encouragement, and they should not be given encouragement or lodgings. It was a dangerous time, not just physically but probably of more concern, spiritually.

"The description of the deceiver and his deceit—he confesses not that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh (v. 7); he brings some error or other concerning the person of the Lord Jesus; he either confesses not that Jesus Christ is the same person, or that Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ, the anointed of God, the Messiah promised of old for the redemption of Israel, or that the promised Messiah and Redeemer has come in the flesh, or into the flesh, into our world and into our nature; such a one pretends that he is yet to be expected. Strange that after such evidence any should deny that the Lord Jesus is the Son of God and Saviour of the world!"

"Such a one is a deceiver and an antichrist (v. 7); he deludes souls and undermines the glory and kingdom of the Lord Christ. He must be an impostor, a wilful deceiver, after all the light that has been afforded, and all the evidence that Christ has given concerning himself, and the attestation God has given concerning his Son; and he is a wilful opposer of the person, and honour, and interest of the Lord Christ"

"Verses 10-11 - Upon due warning given concerning seducers, the apostle gives direction concerning the treatment of such. They are not to be entertained as the ministers of Christ. The Lord Christ will distinguish them from such, and so would he have his disciples. The direction is negative. 1. "Support them not: If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine (concerning Christ as the Son of God, the Messiah and anointed of God for our redemption and salvation), receive him not into your house.'' Possibly this lady was like Gaius, of whom we read in the next epistle, a generous housekeeper, and hospitable entertainer of travelling ministers and Christians. These deceivers might possibly expect the same reception with others, or with the best who came there (as the blind are often bold enough), but the apostle allows it not: "Do not welcome them into your family.'' Doubtless such may be relieved in their pressing necessities, but not encouraged for ill service. Deniers of the faith are destroyers of souls; and it is supposed that even ladies themselves should have good understanding in the affairs of religion. 2. "Bless not their enterprises: Neither bid him God speed. Attend not their service with your prayers and good wishes.'' Bad work should not be consecrated or recommended to the divine benediction. God will be no patron of falsehood, seduction, and sin. We ought to bid God speed to evangelical ministration; but the propagation of fatal error, if we cannot prevent, we must not dare to countenance. Then,II. Here is the reason of such direction, forbidding the support and patronage of the deceiver: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds."

So that would appear to be the specific literal background. Today, in my opinion, we should not shirk our responsibility to those who are not particularly of the faith but who do not consciously preach against it, yet who need material, emotional or spiritual help and direction - and even those who were enemies should be given help if in dire trouble and not ignored. Of course! That would be of the Commandment the Elder mentions in v 5 & 6:

"5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as writing to thee a new commandment, but that which we have had from [the] beginning, that we should love one another.

6 And this is love, that we should walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, according as ye have heard from the beginning, that ye might walk in it."


It is a moving letter, in my opinion, about walking in the Light - it is about being in the Christian Light, following in the doctrine of Christ and the simple Christ Way that He laid down for all to follow. It is simple and direct and requires not the complicated and supposedly spiritual muddles of the human mind to obscure the simple doctrine of Christ, in my opinion as I understand it today.

This word is only translated "God speed" twice. The rest includes the other words in the description.

My opinion:
Doing unto others as I would want them to do to me: if I were living 2000 years ago and spreading deceit and anti-Christian doctrine, I would want others to stop me, or at least not make it easier for me to spread the falsity, because I would have been, knowingly or unknowingly, absolutely wrong. I wouldn't want to have to bear the weight of what I'd done after I came to the truth, so the fewer people I could deceive the better. So if the woman didn't receive me into her house it may have put a slight obstacle in my way that would have caused a slight reduction in the harm I could have otherwise inflicted.

Does that make sense or did I write my thoughts in a convoluted way?

It's vaguely similar  to not enabling an alcoholic...if someone is doing harm it may seem like you are unloving if you don't help the person but you are actually loving them more by not inadvertently encouraging their negative actions while helping them.

Very interesting information all around, about this verse! There's also the thought that the "elect lady" was code for church.. dangerous times..

It's interesting to trace in the New Testament the 'enemies' of the cross.. first ones that is.. first those "of the circumcision" seeking to make all the new non Hebrew believers follow the laws given to Moses, which of course we do but by grace.. Not to be saved or find favor.. Acts 15, the first 'council' so called, which it "seemed good to them and the Holy Spirit" that gentile believers did not have to be circumcised, etc (and Paul prophesied to that he would be shown the will of God, said God's original salvation/redemption covenant was w/Abraham and was "faith" - the just(ified) shall live by faith.. which preceded Moses.

Then there was the Gnostics which Gnostics had been "a loose collection of the esoteric ideas" of other indigenous beliefs, I.e. what's called paganism. They "began of us but did not remain with us" and one of the things which developed was their teaching that the fall was into matter, thus into a body, and it was all evil, so Jesus could not have "come in the flesh".

Sometimes I think the whole ET gospel somehow came from these folks.. but I suppose it's not likely.. and is just another angel of light thing.. deception, deception.. but is pretty much the chameleon.
