The tetragrammaton YHVH is pronounced Yehovah, "yeh-ho-vah", and the name of Christ is pronounced Yeshua, "yeh-shoo-ah", where the name of Yeshua includes the name of Yehovah in his own name in the YE part of the name, in shortened form from the longer version of the name Yehoshua, which is a contraction of two words, Yehovah and yasha, which means, "Yehovah delivers". Exodus 3:15, Exodus 17:9, 1 Chronicles 24:11.

Dear Michael:  I am glad that our material is helpful to your understanding of the Scriptures.  Have you not
wondered why it is that I do not use what you call the names or titles of the Almighty from the Hebrew?

That's because these so-called sacred names are not inspired Scripture.  The Name of our Lord and
Saviour is "JESUS," not "Yeshua" as virtually all Internet sites will try to convince you.  I will be going into
detail regarding this Name in my future paper: "Solving the Enigma of God."  So I'm afraid I will have to
decline your request to change the Name of Jesus throughout all of my papers.  Also, just what do you
think the Name of Jesus' Father is?   Jesus said He came to glorify His Father's Name.  Well, WHAT
IS IT?  Think about it.  How many times does Jesus and the New Testament writers make reference to
the Name of God, the Name of the Father, yet not ONE of the so-called sacred name societies that
criticize me for not using these sacred Hebrew names have a clue as to what the Name of the Father
is as Jesus used it to glorify His Name.  So the question is, how are you going to use "The Name of
the Father," in my writings if you don't even know what the Name of the Father is in the first place?

Is "Jesus" mistranslated?  Listen carefully now:  When the Scriptures tell us that Peter was "FILLED with the
with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 4:8) stating, "Be it known unto you all, and to ALL THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL,
that by the NAME OF JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH, whom ye crucified, Whom God raised from
the dead, even by Him doth this man stand here before you whole...Neither is there salvation in ANY
OTHER: for there is NONE OTHER NAME UNDER HEAVEN given among men, whereby we MUST
be saved" (Verses 10-12), nowhere in there do you see the name "Yeshua," do you?

I know you only mean good by your request, but changing the name of Jesus, "the ONLY NAME UNDER
HEAVEN" by which we must be saved, will not further your cause for the Gospel.  I hope this doesn't
offend you.

God be with you,

Ray

TRANSLITERATING NAMES

We are told that Jesus should be Yeshu, Yeshua, Yehoshua, or some other similar spelling. That is His correct name in Hebrew, and that is how it should be written in the Greek New Testament. But there are problems:

1.The New Testament was not written in Hebrew

2.The Holy Spirit inspired our Lord's name to be written as IESOUS in the Greek New Testament

3.It is right and proper when translating from one language to another to transliterate proper names

The critics of "Jesus" say His name is from G-zeus, a pagan god. They demonize His name by calling it: His Gentile nickname, spurious, counterfeit, a pseudo substitute, earth pig or swine, man horse, man beast, and anti-messiah. Yet learned experts can show that the very name that the critics of Jesus say should be used, apparently is found nowhere in Scripture.

And so it appears their preferred name "Yahshua" is not found in either the Greek or the Hebrew Scriptures;

"While there is a clear etymological path concerning the name of Jesus that clearly shows its Hebrew origin, the name YAHshua can not be found in the Hebrew scriptures. The name Yahshua is also not transliterable into a Biblical Greek name" (http://www.seekgod.ca/htwhatsinaname.htm

Let me ask these critics of God's Word a serious question:

What does the Hebrew Name YHWH (Yahweh/Jehovah) mean?

Answer:  Jehovah is Salvation.

And what does the Greek Name Iesous transliterated to Jesus means?

Answer:  Jehovah is Salvation.

They are the SAME NAME.

Here is how scholar and writer Richard Rives explains how transliterating works:

"A translation conveys meaning, so  Yeshua and  Iesous mean the exact same thing. Jesus is not a translation, it's a modernized Latin transLITERation of Iesous. A transliteration is simply a letter-for-letter switch: the letters in one language are swapped for letters in another language that make the same sounds.  Jesu is a Latin word that sounds like the Greek Iesous. Jesus does not mean "Yahweh saves" or "the Lord saves" or even "He saves". Despite the fact that Jesus Himself means a great deal to many people, there's no English meaning to Jesus at all. The name Jesus is merely the English pronounciation of Joshua/Iesous which means "Jehovah is Salvation."

IESOUS was the word chosen by the writers of the Greek New Testament to represent both the Hebrew Old Testament Joshua and the English New Testament Jesus.

There, the Saviour Christ is known even before a thought comes, and there, the Saviour God is similarly known even before a thought comes. The Saviour is the Saviour to whomever His child is, regardless of whether they call Him Jesus or Jeshua – His redemptive Power, His healing Grace, His overpowering and unending Love – they are the same as far as He is concerned because it concerns His children, who, like a Mother, He so lovingly watches over as they take their first and second steps. His child turning to Him – that is what is important to the Saviour of humankind, in my opinion.

What Ray did not understand is that Iesous is a transliteration of Yeshua, using whatever alphabetical characters were available to use in Greek to try to express the Hebrew name,

Ie = Ye
So = Shu
u = a
s = (added to end of male names in Greek)

Even just glancing at the name you can see the transliteration.

I once did some research on the letters appearing on our chapel's chairs, "IHS", which involved the following if it is of any interest to anyone.

In a nutshell, these letters originated from the first three letters of a Greek word: "ΙΗΣΟΥΣ" which is "Jesus" in English ("ΙΗΣ" from "ΙΗΣΟΥΣ" [pronounced like "ee-soorss"]).

I.e. Iota-Eta-Sigma = ΙΗΣ of the word "ΙΗΣΟΥΣ" (Greek).

This is called a Chrystogram (monogram of Christ), and was found on doorposts of earliest followers of Christ, and also on gravestones.

The Greek word "ΙΗΣΟΥΣ" (or "Iesous" or "Yesous") is of Hebrew origin from the word Jehoshua [יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (Yehoshu'a) meaning "God (YHVH) delivers (his people)"].

The Greek alphabet is not equipped to properly represent certain sounds. It is impossible to write the Hebrew "Yehoshua" in Greek.

No Greek word can begin with the sound "ye", so it was changed to "Ie."

Greek cannot have an H sound in the middle of a word. So that syllable had to be omitted.

Greek has no way to represent the "SH" sound, so it was changed to an S.

Finally, an S was added to the end to make it operate as a masculine Greek noun. (Most masculine Greek nouns end in os.)

So "Yehoshua" (Hebrew) became "Iesous" (Greek) which became "Jesus" (English).

Yah - sh - ua  =   Hebrew
Ie   -  s - ous  =   Greek
Je   -  s - us    =   English

Since in the process of Bible translations over the centuries and millenia it seemed acceptable to translate or transliterate most of the proper names in the scriptures into similar forms in the language being translated into, it God was concerned that Jesus name be spoken in Hebrew only, it would make sense that all the proper names be in Hebrew only and perhaps that the scriptures themselves be spoken in Hebrew only. But God is not like that. He is a distributor, a generous multiplyer, and opener of closed doors. He is not straining at gnats.

Yeshua HaMeshiach is a beautiful Hebrew rendering of His name and station, but no one knows exactly how He may have been called, i.e. pronounced in Jerusalem in His time. I think it important to understand the Name and to understand the Hebrew mindset that is the foundation of the gospel, but only in so far as that Moses and the prophets are made relevant through Jesus the Messiah, through whom the dividing wall was broken asunder so that ALL could participate in the commonwealth of the Kingdom of God, in which there is neither Jew nor Gentile, male or female, Scythian or Barbarian. The heart and mind of God are in Christ to reveal all of His love and truth to everyone- past present and future, because until the full noon- no age or culture or nationality can contain the fulness of God- only Christ into whom all are gathered and within whom all will be "filled up to all the fulness of God". Thats when we will know as we are known, and we will kno His new name, and receive our own new name.

Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

Let me ask these critics of God's Word a serious question:

IESOUS was the word chosen by the writers of the Greek New Testament to represent both the Hebrew Old Testament Joshua and the English New Testament Jesus.

Scholar and writer Richard Rives explains how transliteration works, and then goes on to say this...

"...there's no English meaning to Jesus at all. The name Jesus is merely the English pronounciation of Joshua/Iesous which means "Jehovah is Salvation."

But that is not transliteration Richard, that is interpretation. I would say that the English word/Name "Jesus" has exactly the same meaning as the Greek word/Name "Iesous". As you said, it's merely a difference of pronunciation. Isn't it strange how pedantry can wipe out a word's meaning entrirely?

Then somebody else says (Ray? same web site?)...

"IESOUS was the word chosen by the writers of the Greek New Testament to represent both the Hebrew Old Testament Joshua and the English New Testament Jesus."

Now it's my turn to be pedantic as I have been told to "watch closely". The first part of this sentence is true. However the second part of the sentence is an impossibility. The writers of the Greek New Testament did not choose "IESOUS" "to represent the English New Testament Jesus" as they did not know about it 2,000 years ago.

Is this a case of selective belief I ask myself, the type that can't accept a truth because it doesn't fit in with preconceived beliefs? But I don't answer myself because I take the gist of what is intended, as pedantry can cause more trouble than its worth.

Peace and again Peace

Forgive me for saying something that may be misinterpreted, but no one needed the Holy Spirit for these translations. It was a scholarly effort but these were the simplest of common sense equations. Also, folks typically leave out a few steps in the process as it transpired.

While the Greeks transliterated Yeshua to Iesous as Lastpost pointed out, afterwards as the gospel spread out the Latins(Romans) transliterated it Iesus. The early English translators, depending which ones you leaned on(Geneva was more Catholic influenced, some others leaned on the German protestant tradition) went to Jesus from Iesus(Latin, the wider influence at the time) or Jeshua(from some Protestant leaning translators). Wycliff did the first English translation and used Jhesus. Tyndale(English) came next and He used Iesus. Luther(German) used Jesum.

Wycliffe used the Latin Vulgate for his translation. The Geneva translators leaned heavily on the Latin Vulgate as well. Tyndale leaned  upon Eramus.

Jesus has gained such a wide foothold in English translations it will not, and (imo)need not be changed, altho I love to use Yeshua myself- it isnt an ax to grind or a sufficient cause for debate and dissension, since there are good Hebrew name translations out there for folks with that persuasion to use.

I think people who try to make the use of the Hebrew name a salvation issue are just deceived religionists.
The Logos is complete, but it is not completely understood. http://www.hell-is-a-myth.webs.com/

IMO, I would just like Joshua of the OT and Jesus to be translated consistently together, simply for the sake of the brethren more readily making the symbolic connections between the two men with the same name. But to think that God is pleased with what our fleshly lips utter, over the state of our hearts and forming of His Son in us, is a little absurd.
