Paul wrote to the Philippians - "..in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling"

"Fear" could just as well be awe; and "trembling" could just as well be (with) excitement.. But look at how perfect the verse is for communicating to all levels! Are we an abuser of people? Work it out with great fear and great trembling!! :ticked: Woe! Is You! If such is true!

But once one is on the path of "the way" of faith, awe (surely?) replaces fear and excitement is the trembling.

But I remember when I used to read God's Word in a spirit of fear. The enemy was telling me that the voice of the verses of Jesus and of Paul's writings was often in a yell. But it says about Jesus that He would not raise His voice in the streets. And with His guidance I learned to not believe that sort of 'voice'.

And I didn't go much to church or be taught by a church, so I didn't get a lot of the church authoritarianism.

Here's the Amplified Version of the verse written to the Philippians - "but now much more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation [that is, cultivate it, bring it to full effect, actively pursue spiritual maturity] with awe-inspired fear and trembling [using serious caution and critical self-evaluation to avoid anything that might offend God or discredit the name of Christ]."

It's very accurate. There's nothing wrong or inaccurate in it. But it does, I think, show that tendency of translators and leaders to emphasize the power of sin. Always warning of it, etc. Which of course has its place (prominent place) but! Some of that way of teaching involves fear. Fear of the sheep always backsliding. But I've always thought a leader that focuses a lot on the pursuit of God.. His wonder.. His glory and the glory of what He is doing and what will be (as far as we know it) will have more stable sheep he is trying to shepherd. Simply because a person truly caught up in Jesus, the learning of and from Him...  Those other un-lawful things lose their allure. Focusing on "sin" all the time, doesn't that work like "the law"? Like Paul said "O wretched man that I am!" - Great as it is - the law cannot be broken, one is broken upon it, but we have a way of escape! At conversion, our Heavenly Father sanctified/purified our heart. (Acts 15:9) And now as we follow Him and walk in the Spirit, the carnal character is progressively sloughed off.. God Almighty promises this. And praise is like a fire! Isn't it? :gsmile: I'm convinced it is. A consuming fire!

"Perfect love casts out fear." I think we are always learning to not fear. All have suffered tribulation, which Jesus said in this world all do. We can let it do its work. But we can turn the page, we are set free from the trapper's snare.. We are free to just LOVE HIM... (and thus love others.. love is the fulfilling of the law..)

Jesus, I think, is always saying, "come and learn of me.. my yoke is easy.. my burden is light.." [He had compassion for the crowd for they were like sheep with no shepherd..]

Even in the original meaning of fear in the OT, the word "reverence" is used ... which has a definition of "a feeling or attitude of deep respect tinged with awe"

IMO we are not to fear the Lord in the context of "being afraid" of what He might do "to us" ...... but a reverence of what He will do "for us" through His authority of being "LOVE"

Our deep respect for Love is tinged with "the seed of awe" and by it we are in AWE of His authority "to do" "for us" everything He has planned from before the foundation of the world.

It is what I see in the garden in why Adam and Eve hid from God, they were afraid of what God would do "to" them ..... "kill them" but understanding that we are meant to die to that understanding of "what He might do to us" and move into the understanding of "What He will do for us"

And how all that He is doing is utterly unshakeable.. part of which is transplanting us from the common soil of 'what next bad thing will happen' (ax will fall) into His kingdom of great expectations of His wonders to behold..

and then think of 2 timothy 3:7 ever learning and never able to come to the real knowledge of the truth, knowledge is also a double edged sword.

Amen! Amplified can indeed add more meaning and emphasis to statements.

I love using thesaurus at times;
Awe- reverential fear of wonder [an emotion excited by what is unexpected, unfamiliar or inexplicable- especially surprise mingled with admiration], amazement, magnificent, ; literally gob-smacked. Or just plain wow factor.

So many words to choose from which point to the actual work carried out by a loving saviour to present us blameless before a truly wonderful, living, loving Father.
That information and process truly inspires the desire and need to cultivate to the max the salvation freely given to us by Christ.

P.S-  imagine coming on hands and knees with the head bowed, in a state of guilt and shame to our earthly dad; yet that is what is promoted as necessary to come before our Father.
I am glad to be released from the guilt and shame by Christ Who paid for my mistakes in full- and the mind blowing thing for me is that He knew I was going to be alive before the world began, and the provision of grace was necessary to make the old become new at the appointed time.
