Did The Doctrine Of Eternal Torment Start With

Jerome who mistranslated the Vulgate and added the term eternal as a meaning of aionian in Latin or did it start with Augustine who misread the Vulgate due to the meaning of the word aionian in Latin as one of two meanings which are age/eon and eternal and decided that the eternal definition was the correct one?

The reason why I ask is that some uni's say it started with Jerome's mistranslating aionian as eternal in the Vulgate and some say it's Augustine that mistranslated the meaning as eternal instead of age/eon.

People tend to point towards one source, a specific thing, but it is usually a broader spectrum of events, such as Jerome's mistranslation, the destruction by Rome of the libraries at Alexandria, the ascendancy of worldly authorities(Constantine and the bishops of Nicea) in the Roman church, the mythology of Hades replacing the truth of "sheol", the translation of Hades(grk.) to "inferno"(latin vulgate).......

All the way through to the 1500s where Hell becomes the word for Sheol and Gehenna in English(really Norse) translations and forever replacing "olam"(Heb) and "aion"(Grk).

Some of this I've read before, like the quote from Jonathan Edwards.. quite shocking really.

I figure afterlife torment (which I do not believe in, except as temporary mental anguish on Judgment 'Day') got into bible translations (and the faith) because the culture was so steeped in the idea..
