While there are some nice point in the article it's base it flawed.

Firstly there were 2 daily sacrifices in the Temple. One when Pilate sentenced Jesus to death and the other one when He died.

Secondly, Jesus didn't institute a new feast. It was a Passover meal that was celebrated thousands of times before that day. More and more evidence keeps surfacing that during His time one of the many disputes was about the correct calendar. At least 2 were in use. While figuring out the calendar is far from easy, hints for 2 calendars are right in front of your nose.  His disciples repeatedly referred to the Last Supper as the Passover (meal).

But there are also many references that state Jesus was crucified before Passover.

:2c:
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

..that wasn't how it struck me.. as changing the feasts, or anything.. but was speaking about the feasts as being feasts hosted by the Father.. well worth reading for any believer.. I hate to think anyone doesn't read and appreciate it.. yes that good. And I'm not one to be easily impressed.

And the Passover meal observed by Jesus and the disciples.. (I knew it was "Passover" of course, as does the author) where/when Jesus said "do this, in remembrance of me" it was a new way.. a new banquet.. A new way of feasting upon the Spirit. The feasts being banquets during "the law" as rescue - the sprinkling of blood..

I very much like the idea of the feasts as banquets hosted by the Father.. which of course, many have been known all through the centuries, to ignore! :faint: (or miss) ...the Lord's supper (at Passover) as a sacrificial banquet - great joyful (gorging/feasting) on His Spirit because of His blood given.. hence sacrificial

P.S - "He is our Passover Lamb"

..It's also true, that Day of Unleavened Bread was also sometimes called "Passover".. I think there's more, closely related, but I've forgotten. :gsmile:

I agree about the two calendars, or that is I know there's a civic(?) calendar and another, the name of which I don't think I know.. One secular, one ?

I think it's fascinating how the Spring and Fall Holy Days seem to be prophecy of Jesus' two advents! And, I actually believe this proves u.r.!

..the two advents.. from Passover Lamb, to God will now Tabernacle with man..

Not the civil. Several religious ones.

More like the other way around.
There are 7 days of unleavened bread.
During the Passover they ate unleavened bread.
All year there was leaven in the house. But during those 7 days none was allowed in that house.
So the day before those 7 days they cleaned out the house real good. With some searching rituals etc. (crucifixion day)
So when they got out of bed in the morning there was leaven in the house. But because the cleaning was so closely related to the actual 7 days, that cleaning day was called day of unleavened bread, DAY not FEAST. FEAST is God ordained and DAY is man-made (I think)

John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

"He fulfilled the function of all the bloody offerings: the sin offering that cleansed people from the taint of sin, the guilt offering that brought forgiveness for acts of desecration, the burnt offering that gained access to God's grace, and the peace offering that established holy communion with God 27. All these were superseded by him. He replaced them with the preaching of the gospel, the good news of what we receive from him by virtue of his great act of sacrifice, and the enactment of the sacraments by which he conveyed what he had gained for them by his death 28. What's more, through his resurrection and ascension he has been established as the high priest in the heavenly sanctuary, the mediator between God and the human family (Heb 4:14-16; 7:23-28)."

hi WhiteWings,

Doesn't Luke 22:1 say "moreover Unleavened Bread called Passover drew near.."?

Amen 7 days of unleavened bread in memory of israel's eating in such haste.. And no leavened or leaven anywhere in the house! Or eaten..

But what I was focusing on, which I thought was such a blessing, was what had seemed to me a dry, legalistic system of lots of bloodletting and animal sacrifice - albeit I knew forgiveness and reconciliation was the blessing and was accomplished - still, a dry, legalistic thing it seemed to me.

May take me a while.. I finally did catch on that God's Presence was involved (glory!:) But, still sort of saw the system of animal sacrifice as rather dry and legalistic.

I had just started to wonder.. "what did they do with all the meat?" And realizing there must have been quite a bit of it to wonder about.

I think I did a google and voila, the article i so enjoyed! :gsmile:

And the black and white (gray) image I had of the temple sacrifices system became a colorful and bustling image of an ongoing banquet of savory meats cooking with oil, fine flours, wafers, etc(?) - even the frankincense used (at times) works as a digestive aid and good for the skin..

An ongoing banquet for those serving at the temple, and the three feasts for the people (Unleavened Bread, Pentecost & Tabernacles) - That's about as far as I've gotten in my study of the pertaining chapters about the offerings and sacrifices. (I've studied the feasts before, but not so much the sacrifices and offerings.)

It was exciting! To catch the vision of Israel as being invited 3 times a year (at least) to a banquet hosted by their God, our (and their) loving heavenly father lavishly setting the table.. all the families gathered.. children around and all the noise of a celebration in the air.

The fire of the altar kept burning.. rising flames as fat was thrown upon it, and smoke rising.. to represent His being there with them.

And when He said "did you bring me your offerings forty years while you were in the wilderness?" I envisioned a sad host.. Like the parable, His table is set.. the air scented like any good barbecue.. but the guests have not come..

I don't mean to ignore the gravity of atonement.. But I've always thought the animal sacrifices were rather sad.. poor creatures.. But all that cooking.. not so different in its way to a good midwestern gathering of family and good friends! Add to that forgiveness, reconciliation and the Presence of YaHVEH / heavenly Father..

I just have a whole different picture of it now.

:Chinscratch: might be a blessing for anyone who, mealtimes, growing up, were anything but celebrations..

Yep! Amen! thanks for those verses! I've been studying some about those very things in the Old Testament, and now I see they are listed right there! In Hebrews. And the new - "He replaced them with the preaching of the gospel" - i can't help thinking of how when He fed the multitudes, He gave thanks, broke bread (and fish/meat) and gave to His disciples, and they distributed to the people..

Quote from Marie Glen above:

"might be a blessing for anyone who, mealtimes, growing up, were anything but celebrations.."

My husband's family always sat down for big meals together as a family and would sit around the table afterward, talking and relaxing and visiting.

My family used to have meals when we were young, but there was a period of several years that our family descended into dysfunction, for a lot of reasons (alcoholism, drugs, depression, etc) and one of the biggest symbols of this in my mind was that we stopped eating meals together when my brother and I were preteens and teenagers.

One day when I was in college, after noticing how the meals provided such love and community with my (then) boyfriend's family, I tried to get our family to sit down together for a dinner.  It all fell apart, my brother and my parents got into a fight, and I was deflated.

Now, things have gotten better in a lot of ways, thanks to God, but there are still some rifts.

ANYWAY...I will try my hardest to always come together as a family.

And I liked reading about how in the OT, the sacrifices were actually a meal with God, and then in the NT, Jesus said to "do this is memory of me" regarding the Passover meal/"Last supper."  Eating together, ingesting literal food, but also "feasting" on the bread of life, Jesus, when we come to him in the spirit ("I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me will never be hungry again").

Lately I think of imperfection (what the world and all were subjected to) as naturally resulting in dysfunction! Childhood meals were a challenge, but in adult life, the best times just about always include a meal! Family and friends throughout the years.. Even camping trips, for they always end up around the fire and meals.. And I love the idea of a (celebratory) wedding banquet! And I love these verses - and the way the Good News Bible says it -

Isaiah 25:6 - Here on Mount Zion the Lord Almighty will prepare a banquet for all the nations of the world—a banquet of the richest food and the finest wine. 7 Here he will suddenly remove the cloud of sorrow that has been hanging over all the nations. 8 The Sovereign Lord will destroy death forever! He will wipe away the tears from everyone's eyes and take away the disgrace his people have suffered throughout the world. The Lord himself has spoken. 9 When it happens, everyone will say, "He is our God! We have put our trust in him, and he has rescued us. He is the Lord! We have put our trust in him, and now we are happy and joyful because he has saved us."

Although I believe this is metaphor for all the spiritual riches He (alone) gives.. I also believe it to be absolutely literal. And what a day it will be! Everyone "happy and joyful" ..because He has saved us! A "big meal together as family... and talking and relaxing and visiting.."!
