In answer to this question posited as a reason for not believing in the salvation of all >

Quote"Why would Jesus have to die on the cross if we can be saved without belief in that atoning death?"

No one will be saved without believing in that atoning death, but Jesus said, "If I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all men unto me."(John 12:32)

Also...

He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." (Rev 21:4,5)

Paul said, "For so it pleased the Father to make all fulness dwell in Him and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself by the blood of His cross, whether things in heaven or things on earth."(Col 1:20)

He also said, " In all wisdom and insight He made kmown unto us the mystery of His will according to the kind intention which He purposed in Him with a view to an administration suitable to the fulness of times, that is, the summning up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth."(Eph 1:9-11)

So I prefer not to use the word universalist, because what I believe is that "Every knee shall bow, whether in heaven or one earth, or under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father". I believe in the ultimate repentance and reconciliation of all- only through Jesus Christ.

In my view all punishment is remedial, and some need more punishment than others, but the purpose of punishment is correction, and eventually God's love will consume all creation(Romans 8), because God is love, and God is a consuming fire. Light is fire to darkness and eventually all darkness will be consumed.

"The light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it"(John 1)

Eventually every soul will be turned inside out, and the light of Christ crucified will expose every hidden thing, until the last knee bows, and the last tongue confesses, "Jesus Christ is Lord!"

IMO that is what the lake of fire is all about. Why would God sacrifice His Son so that most of mankind could writhe in agony forever to no purpose? It is not about torment to no purpose, it is about the torment of being in opposition to His purpose, and having that exposed to the light.

Why would God make every knee bow and every tongue confess? An eternal cosmic "I told you so sucka"? I dont think the wicked will bow and confess before they go into the lake of fire.... I believe they will bow and confess as they come out of it, because Paul was quoting Isaiah

"I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return. That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear; surely shall say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength." - Isa. 14:23, 24.

Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!" Rev 5:13

"Why would Jesus have to die"
A very important question EW.
My carnal nature tells me it should not have happened this way. What an indescribable horrible death. Why wasn't there some other way to bring sons to glory? Seems horrific and unfair.
And yet by faith we know it had to be this way. And all wise, omniscient God always does right. God is love.
I do not believe many, including myself, can even remotely understand the full impact of the phrase "God is love".
I pray that our realisation of both the Sons and the Fathers sacrifice will help the Elect better understand the kind of love they have.

Moreover, the cross is not a parallel to the earthly temple system where according to Satisfaction Doctrine we must bring a sacrifice to appease God, but just the opposite. Instead of us bringing a sacrifice to God to appease him, through the cross God brings a sacrifice to us to reconcile us. Jesus led the way for us vicariously in the ultimate sacrifice, taking on the life of a servant, aligning himself
with Love, and enduring suffering for the sake of the poor and the captive. Here we have a very different concept of what "offering" means in relation to Jesus—it is not about him offering his life to appease an angry God, but about his entire life being a fragrant offering of selfless servant-love as he cared for the least and the poor. The offering that God gave in Jesus was not just about his dying. The offering God gave the world in Jesus consisted of his entire life , of his example showing us God's way
of love, revealing for us God's heart of compassion towards us. The life of Jesus is God's gift to us in order to draw us close to himself. Jesus' entire life was a sacrifice as he took on the life of a servant caring for the poor and the forgotten. We too are called to bring our lives as a "living sacrifice" (Romans 12:1) not only "negatively" by renouncing hurtful things in our lives, but also "positively" by living the life of other directed love that Jesus embodied. Jesus death was not the offering, his entirelife was. The cross was the culmination of this entire life of "cross bearing" as Jesus stood up for love even to the point of suffering and death.

I didn't notice that about  Isa. 14:23, 24 - "I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return. That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear; surely shall say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength."

That last certainly shows the idea "all will be forced to bend the knee, but their hearts will not be in, so off to eternal, never ending torment they go" simply does not and cannot hold water!

"The light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it"(John 1)

..and so many believe darkness will win far more than the Light!

QuoteThen I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!" Rev 5:13

how lightly such verses are overlooked.. and dismissed!

I think that's very good. ...I tend to lean toward the idea that the cross was more for our psyche, than to 'satisfy' the Father's need for a blood sacrifice and payment.. He could have declared every one innocent, if He'd wanted, surely, for their faith in Jesus.. Just my :2c: that the atonement was something the psyche of man requires more than the heart of God..

Although also of course, the rising from the grave was and is an important part of it all.. So it appears, doubly that all things were done perfectly by the Father.. and from the very foundation of the world.. How blessed any one is to know their debt of death has been paid in full. Wow.

From Unsearchable Riches - Concordant Publishing Concern web:

We know what sin is, not merely by our own sad experience, but by the place it gave Him. He was the Highest of heaven. It made Him the lowest of earth. He was the life and the light of all. It put Him into the darkness of death. That pole on which He was nailed is the real tree where we may gain the knowledge of good and evil.

Evil is eclipsed by the good. The vivid and appalling contrasts between the limitless love of God and the wretched wickedness of man makes it both the judgment and the consummation for all who gaze upon it. He is our Judge and our Saviour all at once, and we enter into a foretaste of the bliss which will finally embrace all.

In God's dispensational dealings we see the vast value of contrast, in order to pile up a pyramid to give expression to His grace. God did not call all nations, but chose one as the special object of His favour. With this as a background He turns to the despised aliens when His chosen people apostatize. By showing the highest honours to those who deserve the least, He has at last succeeded in producing an object lesson through which, not only mankind, but the celestial spheres as well, may learn and luxuriate in the lavishness of His love.

God Himself planted the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the midst of the garden of Eden. As both were combined in a single tree, it was impossible for Adam to know good, apart from evil. The contrast between the two is the only means the creature has for the realization of God's goodness and the appreciation of His love. For this cause evil and sin have invaded the universe for a season. Their presence is appalling, but their stay is brief, and their ultimate effect, not only the knowledge of good, but the enjoyment and adoration of the God of all good.
3 John 4 - I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

Eph 3:8  to me (Paul)--the less than the least of all the saints--was given this grace, among the nations to proclaim good news--the untraceable riches of the Christ,
Eph 3:9  and to cause all to see what is the fellowship of the secret that hath been hid from the ages in God, who the all things did create by Jesus Christ,
Eph 3:10  that (FOR THIS REASON...My note) there might be made known now to the principalities and the authorities in the heavenly places , through the assembly, the manifold wisdom of God,

This bapped me upside the head recently and helped settle down my flesh-mind. We all, and I'm the world's worst most likely, want to have a 'reasonable' explanation for every idea of God that is in our head. I'm not saying that we shouldn't have reasons four our beliefs, Scriptural ones. But He did say "...lean not to your own understanding..." One of the major reasons for this Creation was to make "...known now to the principalities and the authorities in the heavenly places..." And, He told us that His ways are not our ways and that His ways were so much higher than our ways than the heavens are above the earth. When Moses asked God for a Proof of God's message to Israel when leading them out of Egypt, (help me here God, they're gonna want to know Who and Why we're being told to do this...), God didn't give Him a litany of His different names, what they meant, and a Treatise of Justification for His actions. He just said..."You tell them I Exist."

The best reason I can give someone for the necessity of the death of the Sacrifice is Because He Said So. But such simplicity does outrage the mind of adam. But it satisfies the little child who is being called to enter the Kingdom. When the holy people are called upon to judge the authorities 'up there', we will by that time have been fully briefed as to the 'reasons' and will know as we are known. Til then, we have to be satisfied with our present roll in this Age-enduring Classroom for the heavenly ruling class.

NOT trying to preach, just unloading some recent ponderings of the heart for myself. I'm not anybody's teacher. Hope everybody has a great day!

micah7:9

"But if Jesus Christ is our very Creator, then it takes on a whole deeper meaning. That He would die for His own creation! That's the way I see it anymore. I don't see Christ dying because we sinned. I mean I know it says He died for our sins, but I don't see that as the main or the only purpose for His dying, that He had to die because we sinned, okay.

HE DIED TO SHOW US THAT HE LOVES US! How else could He show us? What more profound way could He show us that, than if He would be willing to die for His own creation.

John 15:13  Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (LRS)

All excellent thoughts. As stevenL posted, "lean not to your own understanding". There are so many things we see through a glass darkly, that as we grow in wisdom and humility- we judge others less by the differences in our views and more by their ability to share and receive more in a spirit of "and the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace".

My object in sharing this OP was to say that the relationship between the death of Jesus and our salvation, and the salvation of adversaries, is not dependent on seeing it in this mortal flesh alone. There will be other opportunities to behold Him...

2 Cor 4
And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

We know that the veil will be removed for everyone eventually, and Why do we know that?

Again as StevenL posted, because He said so...

"If I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all men unto me" and "Behold, I am making all things new"

And How?

Because "Every eye will see Him, even those who pieced Him".....

And because it is "the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ" that will burn away all the veils that remains hidden in the hearts of each and everyone.

In Colossians 1 it says...

"For so it pleased the Father to make all fulness dwell in Him and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself by the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven."

So we know that when the glory of God in the face of Jesus the Messiah (which is "like the sun shining in its strength"), hits the veils hidden in the hearts of men they will begin to evaporate.....perhaps some sooner and some later, but for sure in all because as Isaiah wrote...

the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return. That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear; surely shall say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength." - Isa. 14:23, 24.

the knees wont bow just before being destroyed or tormented forever, the tongues will confess because they have been made righteous through the revelation of Jesus Christ.

So when the knee bows righteousness is imputed because of what?

Because the revelation of Christ crucified.....Christ raised....Christ ascended is the source of all deliverance and resurrection power.

So, what is the benefit for those who have bowed the knee to Him now and had that veil removed?

We have already been reconciled by the blood of His cross.

We have been reconciled and now we are being purified, in progressive sanctification, but where the short circuit comes in is this.....

That sanctification is not the source of our righteousness, it is the manifestation of "Christ in you the hope of glory", because, He is a God of being and He is restoring our being through salvation because it is His glory. His glory is who He is as a being and that is what He is sharing with us- the divine nature.

"For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust." 2 Peter 1:4

So where does the blood of His cross come in in the process of, "As in Adam all died so also in Christ shall all be made alive, but each in His own order" 1 Cor 15

This is the beautiful part.

If, as it says in 1 Cor 15, "He must reign until every adversary becomes a footstool for His feet" and "When all things are subjected to Him He return all things to the Father that God may be all in all", then...

As every knee bows, that blood will be applied on the doorpost of that heart, and the angel of death will pass over, and that soul will be reconciled by the blood of His cross, and be born into the all in all- because righteousness does not come through sanctification, sanctification comes because of righteousness- His righteousness(divine nature) working in and through us- only because we believe.

Therefore it is hard for those who still wear the veil of Moses(2 Cor 3:13-18) to understand that it is "not because of works of righteousness we have done" that we were saved, and it is not through works of righteousness that we stay saved.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them."

We are His workmanship because He saved us by grace through faith. The workmanship is the purpose for which we are created and will manifest as we abide- by grace through faith

"As you received the Spirit so also walk in it"(Galatians somwhere)

and how did we receive the Spirit?

"Tell me this, did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith"(also Galatians somehwere)

So, we are in Him by Him and we grow as we remain in Him by grace through faith and "faith works by love".

Now, Today, we have rest, we have entered the finished work. Why? because He is our righteousness. How do we remain at rest? Only as we walk by grace through faith, because "I have died, Christ lives in me....the life I live in the flesh I live by the faith of the son of God"

And what is the faith of the son of God?

I will tell you, because I was confused by this verse for many, many years.

The faith of the son of God is that Love Wins.

No greater love has a man than this- that he lay down his life for his friends.

Faith works by love and Jesus has faith that Love will reclaim everything in heaven and in earth; That every adversary will be converted when the dawn breaks through their darkness and be transformed when the "light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ" breaks over their hills of darkness to reclaim each heart as the veil is removed and the understanding that love wins arises within them.

Isaiah also said, "And on this mountain He will swallow up the covering which is over all peoples, Even the veil which is stretched over all nations." (Is 25:7)

Then, "Light will shine out of darkness"

"For God who said light will shine out darkness is the one who has shined in our hearts"- not by works, but by grace- and He will shine in the hearts of every one who stands before His glory, which is the fire aionian, because no one and no thing can withstand Him forever- such a thought, for me- is ridiculous.

So to finish up(finally lol)

"If we are saved by grace through faith which works by love, why do we still sin and what is the difference between us and an unbeliever?"

It is this. We have drank from the water of life and the well is there within us. We are fighting not against men. Our war is between who we are now and what we were then. We are seeking to be one with Him, in our being. To grow in the Vine of the divine nature. To love and to shine- hopefully without knowing how much we shine(pride) or working to shine(self-righteousness)- but by His being growing and glowing out of these vessels of clay.

Because we are weak, others can see how Christ is in our weakness, and working within us a transformation- however incomplete it may presently be. And as our weakness becomes strength, the testimony grows without words.

"If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"

We are at the well. It is within us. Not because of righteous works we have none. Never because of righteous works we have done- but because we have believed on the only begotten son of God.

As "they" see Him and yield their secrets to the light, they will, one by one, every adversary, drink from that same well we are drinking from, and that is why the Spirit in us cries out to all.

"Come, drink freely from the water of life".

The Logos is complete, but it is not completely understood. http://www.hell-is-a-myth.webs.com/

Just saw this one since I have gone for awhile and felt a need to post

Why did Jesus have to die ..... simply put ..... because resurrection is proof of that which is eternal

What I see in my own life is that I brought my word "only some will be saved" (when I was in the doctrines of religion) to the cross ..... they had to die .....  so that His Word ... "All will be saved" could be resurrected in me.

John 1:29
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

QuoteWhy would Jesus have to die....?
As the New Testament tells us, Immanuel, God With Us, was the final sacrifice. The unblemished lamb who dying on a tree was fully cursed and took on the sins of the whole world upon himself. Perhaps that is why the skies darkened in mid day. So that the excruciating pain he suffered receiving those was not witnessed. Or perhaps it was God's delivering the metaphor when he said in Isaiah 45:7-8 , he is the darkness and the light. The evil and the good. God is all things. And as such in the darkness was all the worlds sins put upon himself as the Son/Sun of light.

Immanuel would have to die in order to be the last sacrifice. When the Jews before that sacrificed regularly for all their sins. But those did not give them eternal life. They just covered their most recent transgressions against the 613 Mitzvoh. Laws of God.

Why would Jesus die and not fulfill the scriptures reporting? He took the sins of the world upon himself.
Does that mean just a few? One or two? These sins but not those? No, he took the sins of the world upon himself.

1 John 2:2
And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

1 Timothy 4:10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.

Amen.  The only pure lamb.. an exact representation (and reflection! :gsmile: ) of God's Nature.. Utterly pure.. ..or there would be no hope for anything! :faint: pure enough to do such sacrifice and suffering for the others.. (for the world, for us!)

But assured of it, we know it is His promise, gave his word as gave his promise.. sealed here because only utter perfection and purity can bring about a good 'end' result, let alone (surely?) the best possible and most perfect and pure outcome possible. (UR/CU)

He is SO wise.. such a wise parent raising children.. all this, suffering He goes through for surely he is life.. itself, so experiences it all. But he is no slothful paren! But has engineered all things just the way he has (all knowing, all wise) in order to bring about the best of all possibilities. :cloud9:

And just think.. he knew all possible outcomes, etc. before ever doing any act of creation.. for surely that is the characteristic of perfection and perfect intelligence!

What is death but a separation ..... a separation of life from that which it was temporarily given

Death is not a ceasing of life, it is merely a removal of it

Death in the physical body is a removal of life from it; a separation of life from it; a separation of life from that which it is temporary given

Just as in Genesis day one, when we understand that darkness and light are representations of many truths, we can understand that if darkness is a representation of the flesh and light is a representation of the spirit, the removal/separation of the spirit from the flesh, the death of the flesh takes place

in the same way that light was separated from the darkness so is the Spirit of life separated from the body of darkness, and death of the body of darkness has taken place

This first principle (or precept) is the first one of understanding in everything, it's how God renews the mind

Because within this understanding we can now see both at the same time, why is this important, because God is ALWAYS revealing, in one form (seed) or another, what we are being brought out of and what we are being brought in to.

from darkness into light, from death into life, from bondage into freedom, from the wilderness into the promised land, from blindness into seeing, from being sick into being healed ...... do I need to mention more examples? The list is endless in His written word.

This is the journey (the process) He brings us into. The process of "the renewing of the mind" bringing us into HIS understanding of Himself and all He does from man's understanding of Him and all they think He does.

Why did Christ have to die? So we could understand everything about what we are being brought out of AND everything we are being brought in to and each in its due time, and not only each understanding within us in its proper time but each person within the world in their proper time. (and this word "time" can also be understood as "age" or "order")

Does not the prophet Isaiah say that God declares the end from the beginning? (He declared light shall shine from the darkness) and that is understanding that His Glory can shine from this body of darkness while we are still physically alive. Because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.

Darkness is our beginning and Light is our end and the reason Christ is "the beginning" and "the end" is because Christ is darkness to us in our beginning, He is unknown to us in our beginning ..... darkness is just another way (another seed) as a representation of blindness ..... it is ONLY when we can see both blindness and seeing, that we can fully understand that we were blind AND that we can now see ..... WHEN HE TEARS THE VEIL (Which is just another understanding of: When HE opens our eyes)

And that my friends IS His Amazing grace

Makes His words "IT IS FINISHED" so powerful that even death is put to death .....

Wisdom is not measured by time, it is measured by understanding

Revelations:12 is an expansion on the two bruises from Ge:3:15.  Noah and his family were the last people alive and the flood save 5-fingered people from being exterminated. The 'seed of Eve' has to be a 5-fingered person. The 2nd woman in that chapter is mary, the mother of Jesus and the time being referenced is the 3 1/2 that passes between when John the Baptist is called and the cross happened. When Jesus said, 'It is finished.' just before dying on the cross He was referencing all things associated with the bruise to the heel portion of that verse.
When He says,'It is done.' when He pours out the last vial on Satan's kingdom that is the completion of that bruise.

God is pleased to send Him to the grave for that reason. The grief is when Jesus asks God if He has forgotten to end His life as promised.

Isaiah:53:10:
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him;
he hath put him to grief:
when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin,
he shall see his seed,
he shall prolong his days,
and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

Both bruises have to be completed before anybody can enter the 1,000 year reign. The 4 Gospels cover the bruise to the heel as making death what a bruise means, death for an immortal is a one way trip to the fiery lake. That is where satan and all fallen Angels end up in.
