If you have your mind trained to think in terms of eternal punishment, etc.. it colors the scriptures - as someone in another thread has pointed out. But without this training or having overcome it, our eyes are opened and we can see Universal Reconciliation (Repentance, Redemption-the 3 spiritual R's :laughing7: ) peeking out at us from many verses and as an over all theme.. I don't think the early christians had "eternity" as a way of thinking.. the gospel I'm thinking was more along the lines of "those who have the Son have life" and this news was spreading throughout the world.

In the gospel (testimony) of John in chapter nine, when Jesus heals the blind man by making clay (mud) and putting it on his eyes, why the clay? The disciples had said to Jesus "why is this man blind, because of his sins or his parents sins?" (A negative observation.) And Jesus said it was neither, but so God would be glorified - (the reason for all things! surely?) - then when healing he mixed clay and put it on his eyes and told him to go wash the clay.. Was this earthy (distracting) act to keep the man humble(?) having heard what Jesus had said - to be spontaneously healed, perhaps could have found its way into the man's heart as aren't I special! And puff him up.. a dangerous condition..

[Later the pharisees condemned/judged Jesus for 'laboring' on the Sabbath -  by mixing a tiny bit of mud in his fingers! :faint: ]

Jesus, as we all know, is the "express image" of our heavenly Father's nature... He 'trumped' the disciples negative thinking about the man born blind with His (more kind and merciful) comment..

When the pharisees were accusing and questioning Jesus about this healing - I guess it's the healing(s) they claimed was labor - Jesus told them He had come into the world to make see those who were blind and make blind those who see...

When the  pharisees said "are we then blind too?" Jesus said "if you were blind you would have no sin.." How does such a statement support the idea that millions who have never heard of Jesus will be dumped into an eternal torture pit??

Absolutely. As I mentioned in other topics, on this site, I was raised to not only believe in Hell, but have it in the foremost of my thoughts, as a fear of punishment, to control my behavior ( goodie-two-shoes that I was, I really didn't need that ).

However, over the years, I came to know that Love, not fear, must be our incentive, or all is lost. And, as I came to know God more, I also came to know Love more. And, I came to believe more and more that love is so strong, so overpowering an emotion; a way of life; a relinquishing of our own self and a giving of ourself to God, first, and then our neighbors, that when I did hear of Christian Universalism, that those thoughts took flight. Yes, that is the God I knew, the God I had come to trust with my life, the God who was always with me.....a shadow child; a lonely, shy adolescent; a woman who struggled for her identity among the lies I had learned to believe. He had carried me; He had loved me, despite my beginnings and my inability to see the truth ( there are none so blind) , and I knew that His Love would never let go.....of me......or any of his children.

So, at about 60 years of age, I embraced Christian Universalism. Again, thanks to a God whose Love never fails and who cared enough to send someone to talk with me about it, and open my eyes to the possibility.

Part of the answer to a prayer I had prayed fervently, many, many years before......Lord, teach me how to love.

Great posts! I also think the clay Jesus made was a type of the flesh, that has to be washed away for the eyes of the Spirit to be opened...  :dsunny:

Well said!  I covered that verse in my book, but did not think of that.

Reading through the Law (given to Moses) will provide the reader with the outlines of the mind of God - truly it is a transcript of His Character.
Socrates taught Plato.  Plato taught Aristotle.  Aristotle tutored the son of Philip of Macedon.  This boy grew up to become Alexander the Great, largely by slaughtering a lot of people.  That's philosophy.

Jesus spoke the Truth.  He blessed the poor.  He healed the sick.  He even raised the dead.  He died on a cross for us, lived again, and came back long enough to tell us to love one another.  That's religion.

yup...but I wish we could tell that to many of the folks in the churches. I recall watching an 80 year old man running to get into the church building before the service began..I suspect he was so scared of God that he thought he might be punished if he was late.Fear of God motivates multitudes of Christians.

In my lifetime, I have known lots of fear, but, I am hoping I am correct to say, that at this point, I have come to recognize and know lots more love.

Fear still has an emptiness......love fills us.

Love makes us bold and able to go out into the world with a message that we want to shout from the rooftops. Fear contains our soul, but doesn't nourish it.

Fear tells us what not to do, but love gives us courage and energy to conquer the world.

Respect is important, but true fear is damaging.

Love never fails. 1Corinthians13:18

I think one of the best ways to tell people in the Churches about love versus fear, is to give our testimonies. I have given mine in 4 different churches. When people hear our transformations, I think it helps them to believe more, that there is hope, and that people can and do change, because with God, all things are possible.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

Ephesians 5;1,2 " Therefore be imitators of God as His dear children,
                          and live in love,
                          just as Christ loved us and gave Himself for  us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."

To be able to imitate God we need to be learning to think like Him.
What a project and literally mind-blowing concept.

A simple  concept of the grace of God upon us all as the Holy Spirit is poured out upon all   flesh  ,  as the Spirit rises up in glory to the Father, drawing all men unto HIM that  they  will live a new Life in Christ    :banana:

Life is contagious. I really enjoyed Gary's video. In it he describes the way that we infect(jk) others with the life of Christ- in the same way He has infected us with it. The three L's life, light and love lead to the fourth liberty, even as the three R's lead to a fourth, Restoration.

All this is through loving our enemies. "Forgive them Father they don't know what they do"...."While we were yet sinners Christ loved us and died for us"....

Col 1:19 -23
