How curious!

Acts 13:48 - New International Version (NIV)

"When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed."

Acts 13:48 - Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

"And the nations hearing were glad, and were glorifying the word of the Lord, and did believe -- as many as were appointed to life age-during;"

from - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=acts%2013:48&version=NIV;NKJV;KJV;AMPC;YLT
___________________-

The original word which was translated "eternal" in the NIV and "age-during" in the Young's Literal is:

"aionios - G166 - from 165 - aion - an age"

The Strong's Concordance (the book) adds "by extension perpetuity.. by implication the world.. age, course, eternal, (for) ever (more)..." all the way to "began, without end"

And an online version (Strong's) says this - http://studybible.info/search/KJV/g166

G166
αἰώνιος
aiōnios
ahee-o'-nee-os
From G165; perpetual (also used of past time, or past and future as well)
KJV Usage: eternal, for ever, everlasting, world (began).

Totally leaving out "age". I knew Strong's carries the "age" into perpetuity, for ever, and eternal, etc.. but for the online version at this study website, to not even mention "age"!?

Hi Marie...about this word definition according unto men...I really can't say anything to clarify anything about it.

But I will give my  :2c: that does help me..and who knows..maybe it will make sense to you.

I see all age..anios etc..as all having to do with the 'Word of God' because time is all wrapped up in the creation and the generating of

the 'Word of God'.  Before Abraham..I was.  in the beginning was the Word.  I was alive..I died..and live forever. And now Father..

glorify me with the glory I had with you before.  Everything really is connected with the 'Word of God'  I am the first and I am the last.

so,to me..this all has to do with Christ coming in the flesh[I died] and the 'word of God' not returning unto Him void..but having

fulfilled.the purpose[creative] of the One who sent him.

when the 'word of God' went forth and createdthe earth and heavens that are 'now' to us......it was an age..culminating with..

let us make man in our own image[eternal] when sin and death entered....the 'word of God' come in flesh/or otherwise known as

'I AM the resurrection" was sent into the creation to raise it up and not return unto God 'void'..thus the 'I died' part of the seed

that falls to the earth and dies in order to bring bring forth much fruit.[this fruit is  from the lips of the Father[Word of God]

and a commandment unto the 'I AM the resurrection' to bring forth eternal/endless life in the image of God.or,as Jesus said...

'the Father has granted me life in myself" and 'the commandment was unto life" the very purpose of the 'Word of God' to create.

so,to me...it is all broke down as life..death..life...and all tied up in the 'Word of God'.......Life before the founding of the world/or

the creation......death in the 'word of God' falling unto earth and dying' and life returning unto the Father bearing much fruit.

the 'Word of God' come in flesh..laying down the life..has to do with the transfiguration of the 'good' creation into the immortal

perfected creation in the likeness of God.....so..truly it is but God bringing into perfection and immortality His creation/family

Marie  you brought up a great   concept  that  many ,{including me } have just begun  to grasp !!

A perpetuity is an annuity that has no end, or a stream of cash payments that continues forever. There are few actual perpetuities in existence (the United Kingdom (UK) government has issued them in the past; these are known and still trade as consols).

Many   do not understand that death is  a state of being  , just as Life is in the Spirit

An example is   Abraham   ,  he considered his body as good as dead    already     , and through faith   in his old age  , was the seed of   Christ  planted   to fulfill   a promise of God    ,  Abraham was called a friend of God      ,   same as Jesus Christ calling    us friends , it is though that same  law of Faith    , that    rolling wheel with the wheels      are established     in the earth     ,  just as the sands of the sea shore    would this seed be  blessed in the earth and the stars of heaven  , those rising    up  in the darkness   with the Light of Christ in them ..  that glory     of God   described in Dan 12   and in 1 Cor 15

Another example is the  wise and foolish virgins  , all are virgins and all slept [ sleep in  sorrow ]  waiting on the Lord to come ... He comes in the Night   where the stars Shine  their light   , under the   laws    , both Laws  are  in effect at all times ..  from the moment the     Cross of Jesus Christ   finished that   short work of righteousness  of bringing in the new    covenant  of promise  and the new age  of grace  by faith  in HIM  ,a new heavens and earth  by the   HOLY Spirit    teaching us  , that no man would need to teach  us any longer and the doctrines of men would loose their hold on us[ fig trees shaken by a Mighty wind / Spirit  ...     Day of Pentecost     ..
When the judgment     of Life and death would  both be in effect    ...   blessed is he who dies in the Lord from now on   Rev 14 ....

Where the binding and loosing would  be the work of the HOLY SPIRIT   [Father   /Spirit &Son/ Word  ]   would judge   the world in righetousness    .

WHEEL WITHIN A WHEEL   and that moving  Ekek 1  ........ freeing us from Babylon  though   the  Revelation of Jesus Christ     WORD made flesh , working in us though Gods Spirit
Revelation is the  WORD  of Johns testimony [meaning Gods is a  gracious giver  ]  being in the Spirit on the Lords Day      and revealing the   LIGHT OF  THE LORD ..

There is a  whole lot more  , but  for now  it is getting to long ..

aion is the translated Greek word for olam- the original Hebrew word.

olam is a word that carries within a meaning that is of varying nature and duration, determined in conjunction with the subject to which it is attached.

There is a subtle shift in meaning in that translation because olam is translated, "ancient times" in Genesis 6:4 "They were the heroes of old(olam), men of renown."

Word Origin
from an unused word

Definition
long duration, antiquity, futurity

NASB Translation
ages (1), all successive (1), always (1), ancient (13), ancient times (3), continual (1), days of old (1), eternal (2), eternity (3), ever (10), Everlasting (2), everlasting (110), forever (136), forever and ever (1), forever* (70), forevermore* (1), lasting (1), long (2), long ago (3), long past (1), long time (3), never* (17), old (11), permanent (10), permanently (1), perpetual (29), perpetually (1).

As you can see the word goes forward and backwards, an indeterminate time attached to whatever it is describing.

olam also carried the idea of world, and was used by the Hebrews- and still is to this day, to communicate an idea of different worlds in different times or ages. "olam ha-ba" means world to come in Hebrew today and means the age of restoration and light for the righteous. "olam ha-ze" means "this present world" and it means the age and systems and mystical properties of the world of darkness and confusion.

For instance, aion is in Hebrews 13 times... it is translated "world" and "world to come". This is because they were translating from olam, which in its 438 uses in the OT often carries the connotation of place and time, not just time. Not place as in specific location, like a city, but rather place as in unknown worlds and far distant times and lands and ages.

This is why in matthew 25 when Jesus speaks of aionian(olam) pyr(fire) or aionian(olam) kolass(correction)...versus aionian(olam) zoe(life) as a Hebrew, even if He spoke Aramaic or Greek His thoughts were out of the Hebrew mind and Hebrew scriptures, so there would be no contradiction between "forever" and "age-during". If I could transliterate it i would read it

"These will go away for/into the time/age/other-world appropriate to correction, the righteous into an time/age/other-world appropriate for life."

For instance, aion is in Hebrews 13 times... it is translated "world" and "world to come". This is because they were translating from olam, which in its 438 uses in the OT often carries the connotation of place and time, not just time. Not place as in specific location, like a city, but rather place as in unknown worlds and far distant times and lands and ages, as I said above.

Hebrews 1:2; "through whom He made the world"(this time/age/world)

Hebrews 1:8; "your throne O God is forever and ever"(eis aiona tou aionos) To the age of the age means until God becomes all in all and is described in 1 Cor 15, the "consumate age"

Hebrews 5:6; ""YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER(eis ton aiona) ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK."

Here we see "to the age" again. I think this means until the all in all. After that there will be no preists, or kings, for God will be "all in all".

Hebrews 6:5; and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age(kjv world) to come,

Hebrews 6:20; Hebrews 7:17; Hebrews 7:21; Hebrews 7:24; Hebrews 7:28;all repeat the "melchizedek priesthood theme"

Hebrews 9:26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages(ton aionian- of the ages) He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

Notice here(9:26) the Holy Spirit indicates that the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus is the "consummation of the ages" the nexus point of all the ages, because the Lamb was slain "from the foundation of the wold(kosmos)- the first thought in the mind of God(seed-logos) around which everything else, all creation and all the ages-the "adminsitration suiatble to the fulness of times' was planned.

Hebrews 11:3 By faith we understand that the worlds(olam-age worlds) were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.

Hebrews 13:8; Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever(eis tous aionas-for/into the ages) .

Hebrews 13:21 working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever(eis tous aionas ton aionon). Amen.

"eis tous aionas ton aionon" is an interesting phrase because in the OT olam was frequently doubed, "olam olam" to mean(imo) forever, or "throughout the ages".

As an example of how critical proper translation can be to proper understanding, the little word "eis" is translated "into" or "for" almost all the time everywhere, but "to" in most of these verses.

"to the age" means something signifigantly different that "into the ages" or "for the ages"
The Logos is complete, but it is not completely understood. http://www.hell-is-a-myth.webs.com/

:Chinscratch: ..So it could be  read as "When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for perpetual / continual? / or to the age / life, believed." Or so forth.. but so many read it as "appointed for eternal life" as a definite either, or, thing for this present life (before death) period. Seeming to assume there are those "appointed for other than life"... Which UR ("all") contradicts.

Thanks all!!  :girlheart:

Here is something that may also help in the   understanding it is from God the Father only that grants   this ''eternal life ''  here and now and   there is no end  to  it ...   to me it seems to be more open   knowledge and  understanding   and wisdom and love    those fruits of the  Holy Spirit   , that human knowledge   cannot even begin to touch  it , starting than   gaining   a fulness  and closeness  of Knowing  Gods  heart   though Jesus Christ   that cannot ever be broken   even  in death   it cannot touch it ...

John 6:60-69Revised Standard Version (RSV)

Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?" But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, "Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where he was before?

It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you that do not believe." For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father."

After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him. Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also wish to go away?" Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God."

I read somewhere, that this "eternal life," which is really "aninos life" has nothing to do with the afterlife, it is to be understood to be applicable in the here and now.

It's silly to think that the Jews were walking around asking "how can I obtain eternal life?" Like the myth/fable of the philosopher's stone and elixir of life/fountain of youth etc.; From what I read Jews (like most people throughout history and even in today's world) were more concerned with the here and now. How can I live the best life right now.

That is also where Christianity has missed the mark: making people so obsessed about avoiding hell that they forget how to live life right now on earth. Jesus was trying to teach us how to live: love God, love each other, turn the other cheek, love and pray for enemies, give all possessions to the poor, do not anger, don't get caught up in all the petty little laws of religion, be the Good Samaritan, don't judge one another. Can you imagine if all of humanity lived like this right now? Or even just all of us who call ourselves Christian? What a world it would be :)

I was going to start another thread but then ended up deciding to post here.

I just decided to Google what the Greek word for eternal is, in the secular world,
Without the baggage of ET vs UR and bible translations etc.

Aionios came up.

I still believe we are right about our interpretations of scripture but it made my heart drop a bit. I guess I was hoping there was an entirely different word that only meant eternal in Greek.

Does anyone know of there is a distinction between koine and modern greek in the way this word is translated?

Would a modern greek speaker ever use Aionios to mean anything other than eternal?

Is there another word that always means eternal?

Thanks!

I think I read somewhere that Aristotle said past and future were unreal, so time was not real..

I'll never forget years ago looking for the word "forever" in the Strong's Concordance.. I thought the concordance must have made a mistake! No "forever" in it anywhere.. At the end of my search, I came away with the idea, via John 3:16, the one believing has life.. (in this age or any other) like the Greek mindset, life as a constant, not divided into past, present, future as we tend to think)

I'm not as concerned with the lake of fire and its correction - "curbing"-translated as punishment, as I believe most will repent, believe, be reconciled during the 'day' of judgment, which to me follows the pattern of the ancient Fall Holy Days - That is, the 2nd advent of Jesus fulfilling Trumpets, Day of Atonement and Tabernacles.

As His 1st advent fulfilled the Spring Holy Days of Passover, etc..

Which makes 'day' of judgment to correlate with Israel's ancient national and collective annual day of repentance, weeping, atonement and forgiveness known as the Great Day of Atonement, which was their national New Year's and actually most prominent of the Holy Days, both Spring and Fall.

And, since death and the grave (translated hell) are cast into the LOF, to me, that means no one will be dead.. no annihilation of any.. But Yahweh will be "all in all".

Satan and his angels are cast into the LOF, but "all things in heaven and earth are being gathered into Jesus". Therefore, it cannot be an 'eternal' condition for them.

:Peace2: :gsmile: God bless..

I think its all tied up with[bound on the alter] the perpetual sacrifice and perpetual life that is in Christ Jesus[the I AM the Resurrection]

   whats the word for perpetual?

sheila

the Melchezedek Priesthood transcends all time.  and is ever greeting with wine and bread in the city of peace.

look...Yeah,he magnified himself even to the prince of the host...and by him the daily[perpetual] sacrifice was taken away..

and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.

http://biblehub.com/greek/166.htm - "Bible Hub" website describes G166 - most often translated as forever, eternal, everlasting or perpetual - as:

"aiónios: agelong, eternal
Original Word: αἰώνιος, ία, ιον
Part of Speech: Adjective
Transliteration: aiónios
Phonetic Spelling: (ahee-o'-nee-os)
Short Definition: eternal, unending
Definition: age-long, and therefore: practically eternal, unending; partaking of the character of that which lasts for an age, as contrasted with that which is brief and fleeting."

...I like this last part of their longer definition - "partaking of the character of that which lasts for an age, as contrasted with that which is brief and fleeting."

I think even ages-lasting is more accurate to the concept in both the Hebrew and the Greek than never ending..

I think only He is never-ending and unchanging.. Tho anyone in union with Him, as long as in union with Him, are 'never-ending'/ 'have' perpetual (ongoing) life - because and only because of that union and perhaps that's the whole mystery concerning life that heaven and earth is learning... :dontknow: :2c:
