Where/how did the adversary's gender come from? Is there a scripture that identifies the enemy as a "he"? Been curious for awhile.
Other than translations referencing the enemy/adversary as "he" I find no verse. The adversary in my understanding is a created spirit entity.
To "father" something does not have to be a male...and originator for instance. Just as God is not a man.  :dontknow:

:cloud9: @ Micah....He plants seed just like the Spirit, for one. For another, the sons of God came before God and Satan was among them. I'll leave the language particulars to EW, Ronin, or WW.

And on a personal note; ever hear one? They sound like a male dog trying to speak English, for lack of a better description. Had one's voice supernaturally imprinted on a commercial music tape once during a close call in battle of someone, but so many people wanted to hear it, it got lost in the shuffle. Made believers of several unsaved people in a hurry first, though. It's not just the sound, it's the pure evil behind it that goes thru your very soul.

@ Ed....too funny....

Socrates taught Plato.  Plato taught Aristotle.  Aristotle tutored the son of Philip of Macedon.  This boy grew up to become Alexander the Great, largely by slaughtering a lot of people.  That's philosophy.

Jesus spoke the Truth.  He blessed the poor.  He healed the sick.  He even raised the dead.  He died on a cross for us, lived again, and came back long enough to tell us to love one another.  That's religion.

I've heard the same,Bex....I think the reason they sound so,,is because Father is causing their tongue. to rot in their mouth and their

teeth turn to gravel in their mouth..as they speak..thus the muffled loosed lip articulation of their speech apparatus.Part of His

rebuking.[they are very prideful of their tongue manipulation of the 'word of God' to deceive/accuse etc.]

Its an interesting question. I have no particular opinion on it. "Sons" can be a generic term, because all sisters in the Lord are also "sons of God" as a descriptive term for the overcomers in Christ. Jesus said that in the resurrection we will be like the angels, not giving or being given in marriage. Some folks believe that means angels have no gender, but i am not sure about that. It is interesting that the names we have are male names..... Michael, Gabriel...are there any others?

Eph 6  The Full Armor of God
...11Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,

but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm....

2 Thessalonians 2Good News Translation (GNT)

The Wicked One
2 Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to be with him: I beg you, my friends, 2 not to be so easily confused in your thinking or upset by the claim that the Day of the Lord has come. Perhaps it is thought that we said this while prophesying or preaching, or that we wrote it in a letter. 3 Do not let anyone deceive you in any way. For the Day will not come until the final Rebellion takes place and the Wicked One appears, who is destined to hell. 4 He will oppose every so-called god or object of worship and will put himself above them all. He will even go in and sit down in God's Temple and claim to be God.

5 Don't you remember? I told you all this while I was with you. 6 Yet there is something that keeps this from happening now, and you know what it is. At the proper time, then, the Wicked One will appear. 7 The Mysterious Wickedness is already at work, but what is going to happen will not happen until the one who holds it back is taken out of the way. 8 Then the Wicked One will be revealed, but when the Lord Jesus comes, he will kill him with the breath from his mouth and destroy him with his dazzling presence. 9 The Wicked One will come with the power of Satan and perform all kinds of false miracles and wonders, 10 and use every kind of wicked deceit on those who will perish. They will perish because they did not welcome and love the truth so as to be saved. 11 And so God sends the power of error to work in them so that they believe what is false. 12 The result is that all who have not believed the truth, but have taken pleasure in sin, will be condemned.

1John 3  ove One Another
11For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another; 12not as Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother's were righteous. 13Do not be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you....

   1 John 4:1-6

1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

2By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,

3and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.

And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.

4You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

5They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them.

6We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

the spirit of error  does not know God  at all ,  and Christ is not in them to overcome the world    by thse scriptures
But  the devils  do know God and tremble ??

James 2 ...18But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works." 19You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.

20But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?...

This example to me is of the   scribes Pharisees and hypocrites    they Believed in ONE GOD   and yet    , because Jesus told them      2 things     , 1 that they  had no place in there hearts for His Word in them     or accepting Him as their Savior   and   2   they were of the their father the devil and them works/ fruit  is what they produced !!

James lets us know  by Jesus saying without faith it is impossible to please God and    when I return will I find faith in the earth ....

faith produces the works or fruits of the HOLY SPIRIT   [peace & joy   etc ..   edification to the BODY OF CHRIST ]  BY CHRIST  Spirit dwelling within them     ,

the lack  of this    is the spirit of error in my opinion

and is prone to violence   , harm     and full of evil   darkness   major     lack of light / true knowledge of God  in Christ anointing   and works totally against Christ Spirit   of Love  and Life !
Jesus is the reward  !!

So then really there is no verse or scripture that tells us the adversary's gender? That was my original question. Thanks

Gender, no. If you are looking for merely what the text says grammatically, the few times the word 'the adversary' (השטן) is used, all in the book of Job and once in Zechariah, when it identifies what we would call its 'gender', it is always masculine. If this adversary were female, as far gender goes, then the verbs modifying it would all be feminine.

However, the word itself is masculine, which is why it receives the masculine modifiers. This has nothing, however, to do with gender. The land, for example, is ארצ [eretz], which is a feminine word, so it always receives feminine modifiers...(the land [ארצ], she did bring forth vegetation...etc), and yet the land is not a female.

Strictly speaking, the adversary is neither male nor female, as far as gender goes...(having sexual organs), just as the land does not either.

  Hi Ronen
Would you consider it than a    spirit or ''force of evil ''   God has allowed to roam freely    ?
I have considered the   sons of God and  the adversary was   was with them   in Job Webster's Bible Translation
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

World English Bible
Now it happened on the day when God's sons came to present themselves before Yahweh, that Satan also came among them.

Young's Literal Translation
And the day is, that sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst.

Isaiah 45 Young's Literal Translation
Forming light, and preparing darkness, Making peace, and preparing evil, I am Jehovah, doing all these things.'

for me it is more of a mind set  , of those whom   set their minds on the things above or below   , this being the    dividing factor

when the Lord made  ALL  the   DIVISIONS   in the beginning it was   declared in Gen 1

which seems to be a  little book all of itself   and separated   with no  sign of evil .. everything was good

when you read  Gen 2    we can see the major changes   and evil is present    and     the  tree of knowledge of good and evil is   made known ..

The serpent   being deceptive     is what brought temptation in to the picture   and creating sin /error    in wisdom

temptation  is not gendered
temptation
[ tem(p)ˈtāSHən ]
NOUN
a desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise:
"he resisted the temptation to call Celia at the office"
synonyms: desire · urge · itch · impulse · inclination

Jesus is the reward  !!

Thank you very much and understood. I just use the word adversary because I find using the word satan has come to mean a proper noun, as though it is a person(example lucifer).
It is just when I think about it whether the enemy-adversary-satan-opponent gender is unimportant. In my opinion by leaning towards a "he" men's imaginations have made the enemy more useful in telling stories. Just look at how our opponent has been described in books and movies, and it is books and movies that set the identity of our spiritual foe in the minds of the majority of believers and non believers.

For me(imo) I discern the "adversary" as a spiritual entity without gender an accuser.  A spiritual entity who roams, walks to and fro, yet within set limits of the Creator. :2c:

A personal force of evil, is what I see, with personality just as the sons of God have, with whom he presented himself to Eloah...one who roams as his faithful servant, doing exactly what he was created to do, just as the scripture you quoted says concerning His preparing evil.

I appreciate you bringing up the mindset of a person, and how it manifests as a division between what is above and what is below. Our Creator created us below, that we may all attain what is above, bringing the 2 in perfect harmony, just as Yeshua did; and he created the Adversary to oppose that effort like a weight opposes our effort to push it. Our mindset must be to recognize and acknowledge, in our beloved Mashiach, we have been made to be able to push it (fixing our minds on what is above).

It is the very reason mankind (male and female) is called אדם. We have the physical component of דם [dam=blood], and the spiritual component of א [aleph=God]. All temptations involve ignoring our aleph, and living only according to our dam. Our mission in Mashiach, should we choose to accept it, is to live as the the two connected, that we manifest our aleph in our dam, knowing that it is He who is the source of both the willing of it and its manifesting.

I think I went on a bit of a tangent, forgive me.
