Ancient of Days - H6268

In Daniel 7:9, 13 and 22 we read about the Ancient of Days. I have always thought the Ancient of Days was referring to God the Father.   I have believed these scriptures  are showing Jesus Christ (the Son of Man) ascending to His Fathers throne in Heaven and being coronated as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. References in New Testament below.

Dan 7:9  I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.

Dan 7:10  A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

Dan 7:13  I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

Dan 7:14  And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Dan 7:18  But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.

Dan 7:22  Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.

Here Jesus Christ is coming—not to the earth, but to the Father in heaven—with the clouds of heaven. Daniel 7:14 says that Jesus, along with the saints (the Elect),  is given total ruler ship by the Ancient of Days. this ceremony is also described in Mat 24:30-31 and Rev. 19: 7-9, 12.


HOWEVER an analysis of the original word Ancient by Alexander Thomson provides a different conclusion on the meaning and the phrase Ancient of Days.  I find it difficult to accept his reasoning. I hope someone can also study this topic and offer an opinion.

From Alexander Thomson's  article, 17th - 18th paragraph,  "Who is our God - Chapter 14" (complete article attached) he says the following:


One further point requires to be settled. If the Ancient of Days is really the Changed One of Days, or the Changer of Days, meaning the Lord Jesus Christ, how are we to explain verse 13 of Daniel 7? "One like the Son of Man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought Him near before Him." Can it be that after all the Ancient of Days is the Father? This can hardly be, as we are unable to think of Invisible Spirit, God the Father, being in motion and travelling from place to place, if He is ubiquitous. "Do not I fill the heavens and the earth?" (Jer. 23:24).


Here is how we should read Dan. 7:13, "I am observing in the visions of the night, and lo! with the clouds of heaven One is coming, like a Son of Man; (I am observing) even until the Changed One of days arrives, and before Him they bring it near' (that is, the beast). Compare Rev. 19:19-20, where the beast and kings, with their armies, are gathered to wage war against the Horse-Sitter, and the beast is taken or arrested. In verse 11 Daniel beholds until the beast was slain, and he appears to be reverting to the same matter when in verse 13 he says "and they brought him near before Him." In this chapter Daniel is chiefly occupied with two outstanding marvels, the monstrous beast and his wild doings, and the awful unveiling of the Changed One.


A couple literal versions, the CLV and Rotherham's:


Daniel 7:9 CLV Perceiving am I till thrones were placed, and the Transferrer of Days sits:His clothing is pale as snow, and the hair of His head as immaculate wool; His throne is as flaring flame, its rollers a flashing flame."


Rotherham(i) 9 I continued looking, until that, thrones, were placed, and, the Ancient of days, took his seat,—whose, garment, like snow, was white, and, the hair of his head, like pure wool, his throne, was flames of fire, his wheels, a burning fire.


Daniel 7:13

CLV(i) 13 Perceiving am I in the visions of the night, and behold, on the clouds of the heavens, One as a son of a mortal is arriving:Unto the Transferrer of Days He reaches, and they bring Him near before Him;"


Rotherham(i) 13 I continued looking in the visions of the night, when lo! with the clouds of the heavens, one like a son of man, was coming,—and, unto the Ancient of days, he approached, and, before him, they brought him near;

Conclusion: Mr Thomson does not believe the Ancient of Days refers the God the Father. I do.  I view the words Ancient of Days as being a good translation. What do other members think?

I'd explain away the terminology by saying that Daniel was looking forward, perhaps thru a glass darkly, and we are looking back with the advantage of the New Testament.
