The Catholic Purgatory and Universal Reconciliation, what if anything do they have in common?

If I understand the Catholic purgatory correctly; it's of limited duration with purifying purposes.
That's a bit how I see LoF. But obviously no real fire, devils with pitchforks and that sorta stuff.

Yea I guess from that perspective....but really it was an invention to collect money. People could buy their relatives from purgatory, and purgatory could lead to heaven or hell, so ---PAY UP ;o)

I had an elderly blind aunt who says a family got tired of the visits from the "church" asking for more money to get one of the family members out of purgatory and into heaven.  They finally said he was a pretty good jumper while he was alive, and he could just jump the rest of his way out.

Coming from an ex-Catholic from way back Purgatory, Limbo, and the common misconception of Hell are all lies perpetrated by the church to control its followers with fear. I think universal reconciliation was accomplished when Christ died on the cross but will not be manifested for all until the consummation of the eons. I also think the lake of fire is exactly what scripture says it is, and that is the second death.

It really was a money making scheme of the Roman Catholic Church that helped spark the Protestant Reformation. It's all about non-scriptural false doctrine based on salvation by works, but the Protestant Church teaches much of the false doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church including the necessity to tithe which is not scriptural. If you're going to push that, then you ought to live by all 613 commandments of the law, but we're not subject to the Hebrew law.

"For in grace, through faith, are you saved, and this is not out of you; it is God's approach present, not of works, lest anyone should be boasting." (Ephesians 2:8,9)

I believe that I have stated in my first post that I am of a Mexican-American heritage, and in that heritage we celebrate El Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of The Dead). On that day we don't celebrate as many have wrongly understood comparing it to all hallows night (halloween), but instead we celebrate our departed ones in Christ. In the old native-American tradition and folklore, we bring food, candy, drink and music to continue on celebrating with the family, both here and with those who have passed on, for it is believed that as long as they are remembered ~> then they will continue to live. In the post-European-conquest, having been converted to the Catholic/Christian faith, we nevertheless have continued to believe that we are still family, and that helping them in their afterlife is continuing with our love for them; in other words, we have never believed that they are gone, but that they still exist, and to help them with our prayers and fellowship is but a small dedication of our continuing love for them in the hope that we will see them again one day.
