9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Is peter talking about an earthly event?

I can only imagine that his is talking about something before the heavenly judgement.

4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

he spoke about the flood--so imo he could be referring to the time of 70 ad when Wrath fell and over 1 million jewish people  perished--temple destroyed--city destroyed

In 2 Peter 2 he says what the fiery destruction is: "for they shall utterly perish in their own corruption" and the word perish there means to be depraved. Much like the strong delusion given to those who practice deception, the fire that God sends to men is to turn them over to their own sin, to "receive the reward of unrighteousness" itself and be brought to humility in the fashion of the Prodigal Son.

BTW I don't believe it is a reference to 70AD because the context of 2 Peter, just before chapter 3 is a warning to those who were given the truth, but turned away. The Jews were blinded to the truth. Peter is addressing Christians who turn away from the path of righteousness "like a dog returns to its vomit"

God's Will

Notice that verse 9 says, "...not willing...". In other words this is God's active Will. God is not wishing or hoping that any should perish, but it is His Will. It will be done! :banana:
